COTM98 Byzantines final spoiler - Game submitted

I also didnt finish it, but mostly because I went through a major Civ Slump in summer. So I started one week before the deadline and played hurried.

Everything was going well until I started my last war on the home Continent (Greece) and simultanbeouslöy whent after Brennus.

First I lost both of my Knight Armies reserved for greece against a spearman and a Hoplite in the sequence of just a few turns. And then In lost most of my Elite Knights too in a couple of severe Town Flips.

In general I did not build any Culture in this game because I thought I could reach Chivalry faster without libs, and I paid dearly when it came to conquering the culturemongers, where I got lots of flips. I probably shoudl have played for conquest instead and just razed everything.

I met one Bular rider, but since they were my first target, they never really took of the ground.

I also missed the gateway hill, so I built much longer ship chain then was necessary.

In the beginning I forgot to build the Lighthouse, than I thought the AI will finish it bafore me anyway, so I didnt start it anymore. Another 20 turns later when my GA started and still iit didnt come up in cascade I set my capital to it, and got it just in time for shipping my troops to celtica.

@MB: Nice Map design, even better when there was one shortcut route.
As Templar already note, what you do with coal will only matter for people going after the scientific VCs or 20 K. A fast military vic will not research farther than Astro, on higher difficulty maybe to MilTrad. Even more so on a continents map at this stage in the game you have already setup a ship chain anyway which can easily be pointed anywhere and your Home continentis probably already conquered.

But I liked the idea of putting it in the middle, much better than always having to conquer somebody else or wait for AIs to build harbours in 1912 AD. Since this wasnt your first map I was also prepared for something like that and planned ahead accordingly.

In general I like a map like this from time to time, but at this diffculty a lot of the players targeted by the competition are in over their head, so the extra complication might turn them off. So a normal distributed map should also be in the competition from time to time.

In genral the most important thing in XOTM is interplayer comparability, which is the reason why the most randomized features (Black Death, Settlers from Hut etc.) are normally turned off. Also as templar points out Starts which need you to find the right start position a couple of tiles of tend to penalize people who just send there initial worker in the wrong direction. Although I assume you just made the start poor and didnt plan on people wandering off instead of playing it.

anyway I am really looking forward to Sumeria and COTM99

I really enjoyed this game, many thanks for the map. I found the design interesting. However, coal was not really an issue. As soon as I needed it, I built a settler and a few knights and some workers and claimed the resource on the barrier.

I did not notice that there was a gateway city possible, however, my only visit to the other continent was for a dromon to start my GA. First time I came across the black death feature :eek:.

@Kulko

Thanks for the constructive feedback. I certainly intend to vary the maps and difficulty levels and hope that there will always be a difficult and a less difficult game running concurrently (including the PTW variant).

Additionally you should be aware that my free time varies, and so the amount of effort that goes into maps will vary. My priority is playtesting (though I hate it), to ensure particularly that AI development is repeatable and relative power is in line with my goals for the game.

Overall, feedback suggests that the level I am setting is on the difficult side, and so I will adjust some games down. The challenge is then to provide interest for the elite players. I'll learn as I go I guess.
