What does this screenshot mean? Out of memory?
I think I clicked between different menus too fast.

That means a Unity crash. That sort of crash gets added to our report from Unity.

I think there might be a memory leak; I've been playing the Middle East map, and every 15-50 turn I get one of these notices:

upload_2022-7-11_13-41-12.png

I check Task Manager, and 29 GB out of 29.6 GB of my memory + virtual memory is in use ("Committed"). Usually I just save quickly and quit, but this time I went back to the main menu and tens of GB became free. If I quit everything except this tab and what I had open playing Old World, only 6 GB is "Committed", so Old World was using about 23 GB.

Once the game quit too quickly for me to save, and I got that Unity crash. Thankfully auto-save is pretty good.

I hadn't noticed this on standard-sized maps.

Maybe it's just that map and that's expected, but I have more than the recommended 16 GB of memory, and I'm skeptical whether upgrading from 20 GB to 32 GB would really solve the problem? At any rate I've gone into my system settings and tripled the maximum size of virtual memory, so physical + virtual can now go up to 50 GB. We'll see if memory use goes that high! If so I might be buying a lot of DDR4/5 when I rebuild my system at the end of the year.

Middle East map is the full 128x128 (or very close to it). For reference, Huge map is around 90x90.

What is the recommended map size for 8GB RAM?

For 8GB, unless you can usually end a game around turn 110-120, I would stick to medium maps or smaller. You might get away with playing larger maps with 8GB, but you'd be best off lowering number of players on the map, and dropping gfx settings.

I have been experiencing a sort of soft crash. The game does not crash per se, but after the AI turns and it gets back to me, nothing is restored for the new turn and I am prompted to click end turn. When I click, nothing happens, so the game never really progresses to another turn.

This has occurred perhaps 7-8 times over the past week or so (never happened before the recent update that I recall). When this occurs, continuing from the most recent save will result in the same end turn problem. I have to load the autosave from one turn earlier and replay the last turn to continue my game.

You'll find logs in the folder /Documents/MyGames/OldWorld/Logs/

Next time it happens can you attach the logs PLUS the save file it happens on?

Oh boy, I didn't realize I was going huger-than-huge! I reckoned it must be larger than medium but not that much larger.

Is it possible to add descriptions to the World Maps noting their roundabout sizes, similar to how the Carthage campaign has descriptions? I probably would have worked my way up more gradually had I realized. I'd have to imagine some of us are being over-optimistic and trying Large on 8 GB, or just stumbling into the World Maps thinking they sound cool, not realizing they have twice as many tiles as a Huge map.

Not that it would entirely solve the problem - I loved trying huge Civ4 maps even though my computer couldn't always handle them - but if I tried an oversize map in a mod, at least I knew it might prove too much later in the game.

Update: So far bumping virtual memory + total memory to 50 GB is working, the peak commit size is 33.3 GB.

Here are the log file and save from my recent game. The autosave is from today because I loaded to see if it was stuck and it overwrote the file.

I hav had three crash to desktop over the past month. One second I am playing the next the screen goes black and then the desktop come up. I just pop up the autosave and start again with no problems. Not sure why.

I'm running now into problems as well with my current game (T175, 8 players and using Dale's mod for giant map size) - which is really sad, as it is the first one a random map where I could play that far without the AI stomping or a least encircling me in the beginning. I just started to taste all the nice toys you get in the end game... It started with the AI turns going slower and slower, but now I have reached a point were the game first get stuck in the interturn forever and now refuses to save further progress after reloading. In case that is really an RAM issue...well, then I have probably first hit the limit with the 32 GB I have.

Have you tried it with the new patch that dropped today? It fixed my stuck-forever problem. Might not fix yours but there is a > 0% chance. My guess is "fixes to events" is the changelog entry that fixed it.

The good news is that you are right - I was on the test branch while my problems started and that morning when that version turned official another small update happened...and that fixed the hanging, the inability to save and even a part of the long turn times (still not really fast anymore, but no again in the range I'm willing to cope with in exchange for playing extra-huuuge maps :) )

The bad news is that after being able to continue my war opponent Rome has once more pulled a few rabbits out of the hat - or more precisely said, Range-5-Mangonels, which are likely going to smash my small colony on the other side of the sea. OW is giving you no rest and the worst thing is getting lulled in by having won a battle (I noticed that the AI is fond of often just doing a tactical retreat) or having stalled an enemy invasion. Chances are great that the AI is just preparing the next wave and what is here so frightening is that it appears that they have learned - I repelled their first attempts with archers and infantry, so now they are tearing me apart with a massive artillery attack:

A few other people noted unable to quick save and turned out to be anti-virus. A quick exception to the Old World folder and they were fine.

Awesome! Thank you. I will have another go over the weekend.
