Story time!
************
Like many users of the 6800 GT I experienced frequent crashes, and nasty ones at that. Not the nice friendly crash-to-desktops people know about, but those pesky total system failures requiring a hard power cycle to recover from.
Many users of the 6800gt posted similar problems, so I chalked it up to a driver problem and tried rolling it back with no dice. Ok, no problem, I'll just wait for the next patch.... waiting.... waiting.... geeze, I'm tired of waiting....so,
I went out and purchased CoD2 only to run into the same problem. WHAT? More crashes? Battlefield 2, Doom 3, and Quake 4 all run fine at high settings, what's happening here? I have a great system, all high end specs, totally rips on BF2 and Quake 4.
And then it hit me, I'm a smoker. I haven' cleaned out my box in quite a few months have I? Hmmm, I wonder what my vga chip temp is right after rebooting from a crash.
115 C!
No kidding, 115 C, holy crap that's HOT (and I'm using a thermaltake case & fans, vga cooler, etc..) I made a b-line for CompUSA and purchased a BOX of compressed air cans, then went to town on my heatsinks and fans. Man it was dirty in there after only 5-6 months...I've got to quit smoking.
And that did it. No more crashes on CoD2 or Civ4, finally. Box runs at a cool 56 C, and noticably more stable.

This post was written because I spent several nights searching for a solution to my problems with Civ4, and read many threads here in that time. It appears MANY people are having similar problems, and nowhere is this solution suggested. (We're not going to talk about multiplayer bugs here, okay?) If this thread helps even one person, it was worth it.
