Hey fellow CIV fans!!!! I've been lurking about this forum for a month or two now, and there really is a lot of solid info here, just wanted to say that it has helped my game tremendously :goodjob: To all those who take the time to post and help out other peeps... Thanks!!! I've been playing video games for almost 40 years now and I finally got tired of button mashin' and bought CIV5 in September, never played any of the previous versions. I am totally addicted!!! On to the game and I apologize for the long post in advance !!!

Typically I play Emperor difficulty, unless I've want to ruin a perfectly good day, then I try immortal. I find frontier maps to be some of the most unique maps in my limited experience so far. I also like the buffer it gives...sometimes it allows you to expand and sometimes the terrain features will slow down runaway civs...emphasis on the sometimes.

The game>> Emperor>Frontier>Large Continents>Standard size and speed>low sea level>standard resource>8 CIV>14 CS

I am making my way thru all the civs, and today I chose France...no real plan in mind...just gonna have a vodka or 4 and play the map :crazyeye:

I pump out my scout, explore the continent...and only find 6 other civs...
*Pours another Vodka*

At the time I just figured maybe I misclicked on the set-up and chose the random option and it left me with a frontier pangaea instead of continents, or it was some damn good vodka

Had a nice area to settle in, albeit very cramped...decided i could plant 3 cities for sure and then maybe snipe some later. With Korea, Washington, Sweden, Inca, Askia, and the Celts on my continent, it was shaping up to be an interesting ride, and the religious wars were gonna be hell. Hard built a settler, then settled south in the desert, got desert folklore as the 4th pantheon and was starting to feel a 'lil better.

Fast forward to mid-game, I was able to get my religion out...tithe, itinerant, pagodas and the Grand Temple for double pressure. God Loves George Washington and his city spamming self!!! My religion was well over 1/2 the continent and tithe was kickin' in.

By this time I was REALLY lacking for resources, iron in particular, and Korea had a 5 tech lead altho I had top POP and some pretty decent beakers. Sweden had lost his cap to Sejong and I had been in an arms race with Washington just to keep him from DOW. Signed a few RA's...intercepted a CELT GP on his way to my cap, got a nice peace deal even tho I didnt have a single troop within 20 hexes of her

I had my sights set on Korea, who by this time, was the bane of everyone's existence..tech lead, troop lead, and an armada of ships that would make Lizzy jealous.
All the while my poor caravel is somewhere in the Bermuda triangle chasin it's rudder lookin for the long last CIV.

I teched to my Foreign legion, Sejong DOW'ed George and I thought PERFECT!!!! I start movin' my troops in place to attack and WTH?!?!?! Here comes Pacha with THREE GP's bee-lining to my capital. :( I had zero faith, as i had planted GS, so I had no choice but to pull back my troops and surround my capital so they couldn't get in. I mean...I've seen one GP sent at me, but flippin 3?!?!?!?! I didnt want to DOW him as we were friends from the git-go and had RA goin'.

At this point, I decided to turtle and tech towards the top of the tree, time Sydney's Opera house with my Rationalism finisher and take the last 2 techs for globalization and use all my tithe on a cheesy diplo win. But hey, a win is a win :p Ended up catchin Korea in tech, even tho his BPT were prolly better or his UA was really helpin him. I still had top POP with only 3 cities...fun times!!!

All the while Pacha's Prophets are waiting patiently for an opening. I'm like...DUDE...go convert some of your own cities ffs !!!! It was hilarious watching them try to get in.

Finally, my Caravel found it's rudder and bumped into Austria. She had her OWN friggin continent!!!!! I have never seen anything like it. A whole continent to herself with a small continent to her west containing a couple CS. Crazy!!!

Anyways, it was fun as hell and I can't wait to try out a new CIV!!!

A couple of questions...trying to sort out Korea's tech lead

1. How many beakers does Korea get for building wonders and science buildings? He had very few wonders as Pacha had like 12 or somethin.
2. Korea had interfaith dialogue...how many beakers does that give and does it matter if you actually convert the city? do you get more beakers for a GP than a missionary?
3. How do inquisitors work? I mean can you plant them outside a city and deter other GP's/missionaries, or do they serve the same purpose as say a worker just occupying a tile. I know how to remove a religion with the inquisitor, but the description says it can block or impede I think.

Apologies again for the lengthy post..but it was a great game and I wanted to share, I also attached a save file with the map revealed so ya's can check it out...Hopefully the save file works as I am pretty much computer illiterate :crazyeye:

Inquisitors are like workers in that they can't be passed without going to war iirc.

I've only had my own continent once but it was Australia and its surroundings on an earth map hehe I love being able to focus on building cities instead of worrying about going to war all the time.

Never tried frontier maps so far. Should i try with vodka too? :D

Thanks man, will give it a go next time I see an army of prophets heading my way.

Well, by then an Inquisitor may cost you 500, 600 or more faith (depending on era) and you may not have that much faith sitting around when the GPrs and missionaries start loitering outside on your culture borders, smoking cigarettes and plotting your conversion to their religion. Better to buy an Inquisitor before you leave the Renaissance (300 faith) and just bank him away (though you do pay maintenance).

Also, if you have a decent enough road network, an Inquisitor can cover multiple cities--just shuttle him here and there to deter the GPrs and missionaries. If you have more than 3 cities, a second Inquisitor may be worthwhile, depending on the religious fervor of your neighbors and the amount of pressure your religion is exerting (if you have a bunch of tightly packed cities with pressure in neear or above +100, I wouldn't worry much about wandering GPrs and missonaries--pressure will reconvert your cities quickly enough).

 Vodka, always :D

Very informative thread ya have on the 4 city Tradition opener, has really helped my game a LOT  I went back to the Liberty tree the other day with Askia, and felt totally out of synch as I have so gotten used to the benefits of tradition.

I like Frontier the best so far, sometime there isn't really a noticeable difference than say... a regular Pangaea or Large Continents, but most of the time ya have some time to build a few key buildings, rather than pumpin' out umpteen slingers 'cuz Lizzie is settles her second city 6 tiles away from ya capital on turn 15.

Scouting can sometimes be a pain, as the barbs have a frustrating sense of understanding of where I want to go. After I got accustomed to the game and moved up in difficulty, I had turned OFF goodie huts, because I felt that with the 2 free warriors and starting scout to roam gave the AI even MORE of an edge than it already had. With frontier there are loads of open, unexplored places on the map...especially at low sea level, even late in the game I can find a hut occasionally. So it SEEMS like it lessens another advantage the AI has, or maybe it's just the vodka

Excellent :goodjob:

So it seems that you have a larger area to expand and stuff? Very interesting map for mp too then.

Yes, I would think so, definitely. I have used the ~ reveal all function a lot ....not while playing ofc, but just exploring the different map types. Generally there is some well placed mountainous regions providing a good buffer zone and choke points, and some room for growth.

Sometimes, however you can get blocked in as this game file shows, with other CIVS having loads of room to drop cities. I have found this to be the exception, rather than the rule, tho.
