Erm, this may be a really stupid question - but are there any naval units that can carry Cruise Missiles ?? Can I send them across oceans somehow ??

cant you put them in an aircraft carrier?

God, how could I NOT think of that

Thanks !

What??? you can carry CM in a carrier!!??? Am I stupid or what?? didn't even think about it :suicide:

Transport will do fine, can't load them in a city: move the CMs to a transport that docked on the shore line.

You can load it on a transport, "wake him" and fire it from the ocean (I think).:D

Nope. CMs can only fire from vessels with the "carries tactical missiles" ability/flag set, which if set for the transport would keep foot troops off it.

CMS can be "sent" via transport, or fired from a nuclear sub, with the std game rules.

Well I can't fire CMs from a Nuc Sub on standard rules.

I´m pretty sure I did the transport shooting once... maybe in the oldest version.

I dunno. By the time of cruise missiles I´m losing badly or winning by diplomacy.

I wouldn't normally bother with cruise missiles. Unless I'm pissing about with a big tech lead over the AI (like in my recent game - I've nearly reached the end of the modern age and my opponents are still in the late medieval/early indutrial ages, none have infantry yet andonly one might have riflemen). Normally all you need for modern age conquest is modern armour combined with a few armies of modern armour. Toss in a few transports, radar artillery, and mech infs for good measure and you've got a dominant military guaranteed to win you nearly any war you can imagine.

Time to move up a level. Cms are almost essential for attacking mech inf fortified in metropolii. I lost a modern armor army to a veteran mech inf recently. Wasn't too bothered as I had plenty more but you can't expect to be sending modern armor against musketmen in the higher levels newbie.

I play all my fun games on deity. Lower level games are played only for tourneys. On monarch it's easy to get over an age's lead in tech (by halfway through industrial age). Emperor half an age is not too difficult by a slightly later time period. On regent (the lowest level I've played) a two age lead is possible. Only on deity does the AI get such a large advantage that an tech lead is virtually impossible to hold until you start attacking the AI to weaken them. I have saves of several games where I managed a huge tech lead, usually space race games, if anyone wants to see them, specifically a 2 age lead regent one and an age lead on monarch.

As I said, if you want to attack mech infs in bigger cities, use Modern Armour armies, or radar artillery for those really tricky cities placed on hills. Radar artillery not only weaken the units, but also cut down the size of the city. You can reuse the radar artillery as often as you want, and in addition you can upgrade them from the artillery you may have been using for conquest in the mid industrial age. Cruise missiles are too wasteful, 60 shields and their gone. As for armies, you do loose some but it's definitely rare enough to be unimportant.

So far, I've seen Aegis cruisers only once - because I deliberately prolonged my game just to see them :(

Playing on huge maps I find myself with hundreds of years of peace weighing heavy on my hands. Cruise missiles are a fun thing to build because all of a sudden you have a war and your income goes up. Building modern armor is all very well but you get half way across the enemy territory and all of a sudden you realize just how ridiculously large your army is. I just can't stomach disbanding MAs, they are too good.

Curious,

Your poll title does not jibe with the thread title.

I know.

I've not seen them yet either (only my 3rd gme though). Just managed to get Stealth last time, but ran out of time for any more techs, incl. Radar Artillery :(

I've had AEGIS a few times but really only because I didn't realize just how powerful my army was and i was trying to maintain peace as a learning exercise. The AI didn't oblige by attacking them so I can only assume they are pretty good.
