cs:s vs 1.6

so here's the thing...

some legend at my school managed to hack counter strike 1.6 onto the school computers about 2 months ago, which has led to many productive lunchtimes recently filled with good old-fashioned FPS action. gotta say, i love it. i had never played cs before, and i have to say that it is easily one of the best FPSs i have ever played, and great fun playing lan games with all your friends and what not.

so seeing as it was so much fun, i was thinking about getting it on my home pc. but i don't really know whether i should get cs:s or 1.6. on the one hand, i learned how to play on 1.6, and i know i love it but i guess it isn't as simple as that. since a large part of pc gaming is the communities, i kinda wanted to know what other peoples opinions are on the two games, and their preferences. for example, i have heard that cs:s community can be very flamey to new players (and although i am not new to the genre, i would still take a while to pick up the intricacies of online play)? true? also i heard that the variety in feasibility of guns was dramatically smaller in cs:s, being essentially just the ak, m4, awp and deagle.

i've rambled on for long enough - i would just like to get some opinions from people experienced with both games.

oh and my computer can run both, so that is not an issue at all.
 
depends, 1.6 usually sees a lot of hackers which is made worse because you can shoot through everything. since moving to source i have played 1.6 only a few times so what it is like now i am not so sure.

Problem with CS:S is that everyone seem to play only de_dust2 map which sucks.

Either that or they play gun_game which is a mode where you have to ket a kill using each gun. the first person to cycle through all the guns then get a grenade kill then a knife kill wins.
 
1.6 is great, but if you're gonna get the game from scratch, just get CS:S. To be honest, I find 1.6 better, because it's brighter, and the models and textures don't seem to interfere with the gameplay as much as CS:S. But that's probably because I'm so used to 1.6...
 
CS:S has some really unbalanced guns, pretty much everybody just uses the AWP becuase its this insane one shot sniper/assualt rifle of doom. It gets really old, the greande mechanics work a little different in source as well, there is A LOT of grenade spam making it very new unfriendly, and as mentioned before, everybody plays like one or two different maps, which gets really old.

CS 1.6 is better, but its still unbalanced to all hell, and its hacked to hell and back to where you can jump in sometimes and just get raped as you spawn. But the gunplay is better and you actually get some map variety.
 
I tried 1.6 and, frankly, CrossFire, a free game, is much better.

Wrong. AKs and M4s are by far the most used guns, because they can be used at any range. AWP fails close range.

Source grenades obey the laws of physics (except for a few cool little glitches), 1.6 grenades dont

You're confusing CoD with CS:S.
and as mentioned before, everybody plays like one or two different maps, which gets really old.

d2, train, nuke, ferno, tuscan and season are all played competitively. That's more than one or two different maps.

If you try to play on public servers, you'll get destroyed by cheaters.
If you try to join the competitive community, you'll be flamed off because if you're any good they'll think you're cheating.

Neither community is particularly friendly to new players, but so long as you don't banter it's generally very easy to ignore.

Speaking from a competitive standpoint, the usp, glock, deagle, mp5, famas, galil, ak, m4 and awp are all used fairly frequently. I'm fairly sure it's about the same in 1.6 though.


If you ever intend to play counter strike source/1.6 competitively, source is much better for online competitions, and 1.6 has a bigger lan community. But, at least in Australia, 1.6 is a dying game, and won't have much of a community for too long. So I'd definitely go with source.

i guess those are the only guns used on cs1.6 anyway...

i guess i'll buy source then. its only £3.50 i think so its hardly gonna be a big waste of money. :)
 
I only got CS:S mainly for the maps, materials, and models for Garry's Mod.
 
All of what I said up there is true. Ignore what the other guy said.
 
I play(ed) both extensively, and 1.6 was the better game. Sadly time caught up on it and it's graphics are outdated, the way nades work is a pain in the rear end and the amount of cheaters caused me to flee to CS:S which apparently gets better support from Valve. I see way less cheaters in CS:S! In 1.6 you'd see at least one or two every day you played, if not way more. Quiting because of a cheater taking over the server you played on was way too common.

Gameplaywise 1.6 beats any other shooter there is. It took pure skill and nothing else to master it, and nothing feels better than shooting 5 AK headshots in a row knowing that they'll all be cursing your name. I'm enjoying CS:S nowadays though, playing wars is good fun :)

If you play CS but don't war, you're seriously missing out. Just go to mirc, connect to quakenet and join #2on2.css or 3on3, 4on4 or 5on5 and go find some people to play against.
 
I used to make cheats for CS1.6, was a lot of fun, and I learnt a lot about computers, graphics and programming by doing it.
