ct3 - Chieftain Training Day (for newbies only)

Excellent points, both of you!

I know I sometimes get to sounding a little pedantic on what to mine vs what to irrigate, but I also try to point out that it is dependent on the situation, and the situation is often fluid.

In my post above, I was just rather  when I opened the save and saw Babylon with irrigation over the plains to its southeast, and mines being constructed on the normal grasslands to its west.

Believe me, I appreciate the input you folks have! I don't really claim to be that good; I just shouldered this burden when CT would have let it fall by the wayside.

Again, thanks for the comments! :D

Yep, Arathorn, I didn't bother to mention that part, since I was rambling anyway! :)

Padma, our CT3 group thinks you are wonderful. Most of us are newbies and we are learning a lot here with your help.

And thank you again for not letting us fall by the wayside, which we would have, had you not come to the rescue.:jump:

Thanks for the kind words, stwils.

Just remember that I'm not a Sirian, or an Arathorn (or even a Zed-F ;) ), but just a reasonably successful Regent-level player. Those guys really know how to play this game!

I just couldn't let a bunch of "newbies" lose interest or become disheartened because nobody would give them that "leg up" on the game. And now we see you guys playing other SGs, and joining discussions up in Civ3-GD. So :goodjob: to all you folks, as well!

:D

I'm not sure how fast the next turns will be, but I wanted to let you all know I will not be at my computer Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.

stwils:)

Heh, Padma, IIRC you did well enough in my training day game... I think we must have had about 100 Riders going by the end of that one :)

I'll admit, the silly notions that used to pervade this forum about which tiles absolutely had to have which improvements get under my skin, so perhaps I overreacted a touch. You don't see that kind of thinking around much anymore, though, which is a good sign.

Hehe - yeah, I think I remember kicking off the Iroquois war with three SODs of Riders, with reinforcements coming right behind! We were even slogging through jungles to get at the last Japanese and English cities, IIRC. That was a fun game.

I agree, I'm glad the ideas of "you must irrigate this" and "you must mine that" are pretty well gone. I tend to follow cracker's ideas of what is optimal for a given tile, but I try to temper it with reality. For example, I recently had a game where I started by a beautiful Grassland Wheat. But as I explored, I found there were no rivers on my side of the mountains! So mining proved optimal for the grame reality.

But I do appreciate your popping in to make sure I'm not going off the deep end! :D

I also use to be guilty of fixed development rules. The best city development rules - zoom into the city if you are unsure what is needs. A very important rule to survive at the higher levels.

Well, stwils, it's "feast or famine" as the saying goes. :)

I see you're back in town (you're listed as in this forum as I post. ;) ), so you are up next in this game, as archer hasn't responded to either the thread or my PM.

I know you are also looking to catch up in handyandy's / cracker's game, and I think you may also be up in SUL5b!

:D

Got it!

Give me time to get back into things. I haven't even unpacked my suitcase yet!

Yes, I did just post in handyandy's SG thread as I had gotten into it just a bit before I left town.

But PLEASE .... not Sulla5b Yet!

I'll get caught up.

I invited archer to hop back in if he wanted to, but he has indicated he is real busy right now, so I will go forward.

Wow. What a lot of cities we have!

Studying...

Here are my little "pre turn" comments.

Most of our cities, all 2000 of them :) are doing all right. I will indicate changes I make in the pre turn.

I looked at our people on the island, Samaria, close to the Greek island , Knossos, with hopes we might use that to take over Knossos. Alas, I don't think we are in any shape there to try that. That island is growing slowly, and it is quite small.

My thoughts are that we should build up our forces, including galleys or whatever ships we can build after our research, and then, and only then, attack Greeks, Romans, Egyptians.

And lest we forget, Chieftess set this game up with the respawn capabilities, so we need to be aware of that.

Wish we could explore north of our continent. I wonder what is up there.

And Padma, yes, I will try to settle the land north of Bapedi and west of it. But first I have to see how we stand on building settlers.

OK. Those are my thoughts.

(I am not about to wage war during this turn. I'm still battle shy after I lost London in Sul5b. :( )

Iin reply to Stwils Preturn comments and questions:

Looks like we get Education in 2 turns - what do you think of going to Astronomy next? Just want to get to magnetism so we can travel on ocean tiles. I am so tired of galleys!

I see that Sceince and Happiness are both at 30% - that looks good for now.

Woo Hoo - We still have four of the top five cities :jump: - so I like your idea of continuing to grow :goodjob: - let's get good and powerful before we take on anyone.

And yes - glad you remembered about the respawning - I had forgotten about that! :yeah:

Helping those zero growth cities seems good too - most cities look good but I'll bet there could be some improvements as you mentioned.

Since you mentioned heading North - perhaps one of our Northern cities could be changed to be completing a galley??? Not sure about breadcrumbs or if it is worth it - but might be worth checking out.

Padma had suggested building cities north and west of Bapedi - seems great but will you have time to get any settlers on this turn? Perhaps at least can begin.

That's all I can think of in reply to your post. :)

Oops  - sorry for my delayed reply to earlier post !!! I see stwils posted the save two minutes before I posted - so I guess I just didn't see it arrive as I was busy writing my comments. :D
