ct3 - Chieftain Training Day (for newbies only)

stwils - using wordpad is not as hard as it seems - do as above advised (Padma and Bob the B.) - keep the wordpad small and after each movement just "click alt-tab" and there you are - you can write every move up easily - and always save the wordpad and the game each time.

See easy - put down that pen and paper :) ;)

At least you guys call it stuffing. One of the most confusing moments for me when I moved out here was when we were going to an Amish-run restaurant and my wife and her parents couldn't stop talking about the "dressing" there and how they were going to eat a lot of dressing. I have had some salad dressing that was pretty amazing, so I figured that's what they were talking about. Then I got my introduction to Midwestern-ese and found out they call stuffing "dressing." I tried to point out that it even says stuffing in the aisles and on the boxes at the grocery store, but you know how stubborn they can be out here in the Midwest. :) Heck, most of Indiana still doesn't observe Daylight Savings Time! :)

Happy Thanksgiving gang!

BoB

Well, Bob, stuffing and dressing are two different things here.

Some people stuff the cavity of the turkey with a mixture of "stuff" which enhances the turkey and which the turkey flavor enhances.

But I make a dressing like this. Crumble up two pan fulls of home made cornbread. Add lots of chicken broth and let it soak and get mushy.

Then I saute several cups of cut up celery and onions in a little turkey fat/butter/ or oil.

Add the celery and onions to the cornbread mixture plus a lot of sage, thyme, and poultry seasoning. Put in a big pan and stick in the oven and bake.

Serve along side your turkey with gravy on top.

Whatever you are having today, enjoy!!!! Happy Thanksgiving.

Ymmm stwils' recipe :) - you described "dressing" just as we like to have it cooked. (It really is a 3 day recipe !!!) The extra dripping from the turkey make it even better and yes to sage - fresh rosemary too if in the garden

- but it must be Cornbread to begin with - I know we are both from GA - my in laws (From MN) love the bread stuffing - but .... "gotta have the dressing"

(Bob - dressing on salad :D -sure I understand the confusion ;) - but then we could get into the whole "sauce vs. gravy" talk :) )

Padma - go in seach in of dressing!!! :yeah: IT can be found - I was at U. of Chicago. for school and found it (although a very dangerous/but cool neighborhood I might add... but that was in the '80's - no offense to town) Nebraska must have a "hole in the wall" that cooks it - otherwise - next year we are all sending you recipes ! :)

****anyway team - have not posted today - I did not seem to get the fact that it was not only a "family day" but a "drop-by-friends-have -bloody marys -talk-and- visit- all - day." :crazyeye:

Will do preturn tonight and post on Friday.

mcdan - one of the ladies I work with is from Louisiana. She didn't know there was anything *but* cornbread dressing until she moved here! So I *can* get it. ;)

Plus, remember that I spent 23 years in uniform, and still work on a military base. I have lots of *southern* connections.

:D

partial post - sorry - in laws want to play Spite and Malice on computer and this is the only comp. in house that is on line - the others are just for kids...

OK - preturn time - but before I go there I did study BoB the Builder's post and have to add about his reference to movie - "Better off Dead" and the paperboy - TWO HOURS - TWO DOLLARS -that made me  - had forgotten movie and just ordered it on Netflick to see again. I assume if you liked that movie you prob. like "High Fidelity" as well - book and movie. (Hey team - Hope you all know about Netflick!!!)

Glad you've got the cornbread dresssing connection Padma :)

OK - Preturn:
We are the top five cities - big surprise! But Persepolis is sitll only at size 7 and no one is over 12. I know some gamers prefer to keep cities at 12 and below so will keep a check on this. We are ranked #! in everyting - 82% approval rating (a tad higher that Pres. Bush :) - sorry - a Fox News fan nevers knows when to stop - ignore me!).

All looks good but literacy is lower than I expected - will check into universities etc as was discussed in the last 10 turns. We are great on disesase- only 8%- barely a blip - I always - when I play my own game end up with a city in the jungle filled with disease.

Wish I could send picture (thanks for advice but still cannot do it - will practice- installing that new computer might help today) - but the Histograph
shows it all - we rank at 236 - in first with only Greece - not even a close second - at 78. I have never seen such happy citizens!

Not sure I need to even list all the wonders - we have pyramids, lighthouse (wasn't that a struggle or maybe I was impatient), the colossus (boring), The oracle, Great Library - yahoo - needed that one), the Great Wall, the Art of War is close to completion, as is Sistine Chapel, Magellan's Voyage, Copernicus's Obser. We have Leo's Workshop, - Looks great.

Doemstic Ad- science slider needs to stay as is at 40%

Trade world maps with Greece - others really do not have what we need unless they give us all their gold :)

We are set in 7 moves for chemistry - shall I go for physics to get magnetism. AM tempted by metallurgy because cannons are just plain fun - but unless I hear from team - will go for physics.

More to post when relatives take the naps ;)

mcdan, your account of Thanksgiving with the relatives and in-laws reminds me somehow of Dylon Thomas' "A Child's Christmas in Wales" when he talks about the uncles all sleeping after dinner... and about the aunts and their toddies ... and about what the children were up to...

stwils:)

stwils- you are right! You've got my family pegged via D. Thomas - with a change of accent, a touch of Tennessee Williams and more naps ;)

I do love that D. Thomas tale- and even the PBS movie version if you have not seen it. :)

Family has been off to shop for Xmas trees (I know it's early...) so- finally I post!!!!! It will not be my usual long post - must hurry for team's sake and the fact that card games and scrabble will ensue when family returns :D

PRETURN FINALLY _ AND ENTIRE POST :)

I am reprinting beginning of preturn (misus my little comments to all) so no one has to search through our posts:

We are set in 7 moves for chemistry - shall I go for physics to get magnetism. AM tempted by metallurgy because cannons are just plain fun - but unless I hear from team - will go for physics.

City Checks:

--Sidon- those citizens keep moving! Changed them to increase temple from 40 turns to 14 turns with growth in 2 turns.

Antioch- growth looks good for knight in 5 turns

Tyre- also looks good fro growth in 1 turn/ harbor in 5

Persepolis- also on track- growth in 3/ Sistine Ch. in 7 turns

Susa - just a little tweaking
help growth but not much - cannot hurry Magellan's Voyage

Parsargadae- fine - musketman in 4/ good growth as well

Zimbabwe - move citizens to increase growth to 4 and Coper. Obser. to 7 turns

Tarsus- cannot help - still 9999 turns with caravel in 2 turns - decide to spend 40 gold to rush and get it in one turn.

Ergili- still at zero grwoth but harbor in 7 - no way to help in preturn as I can see - if I rush harbor it would cost 140 gold - too much. Let's see how the workers can help this city instead.

Ulindi - Increase Art of war up to 10 moves but still at 9999 growth

Arabela- looks great! Musketman in 3/ Growth in 3

Gordium - same thing - growth in 9999 - musketman in 3 - cannot help yet

Bactra- Move citizen and harbor will be done in 10 turns instead of 11 - not that much of a change

Sardis- move citizen for aqueduct in 9 turns but still growth in 9999

Bapedi - looks good - growth in 2/ courthouse in 11 - all citizens in good places

Hamadan - no changes - growth in 2/ harbor in 63 !!! but know harbor is needed

Pricesylvania - no changes - citizen is doing his best

mcdan,

With all the relatives/in-laws in your house for Thanksgiving - eating, napping, playing cards, unpacking - packing, having their bloody marys;) - not to mention the children! - well, I am amazed that you were able to do your turn!

And just from my perspective, it looks like you have moved us forward. Looks like a good turn to me.

stwils:) also relieved that Thanksgiving only comes once a year.
And now we are close to :santa: Ho Ho Ho

After many hours I finally caught up in this to the present in this game. I'm having a lot of fun and I'm not even playing. Keep up the fun game!

Hi Hydro,

Glad you are enjoying our struggles/successes/humor. Please feel free to comment.

Now to our regular players, and mcdan, I have not checked with all your latest turn, but don't you all think we will need a gallion to get all of our military over the ocean to the others? And for that we have to have Magnetism which make our beloved Lighthouse obsolete.

Not sure right now. Just asking.

stwils:)

I think you can research Nav and hold off on Magnetism. Nav isn't required but it does allow passage over ocean tiles and it also opens up Magellan's Voyage, which is the natural successor to the Great Lighthouse. :)

BoB

Here I am, finally. :)

I didn't see any real :smoke: jumping out at me, other than Hamadan. Why is it rioting, still? They want entertainment, give them an entertainer! :D Just make sure it is a one-food-producing citizen you convert. (Once you have a harbor, you should be able to use luxes, etc. for happiness.) But way out here on the fringe of our "Empire", an entertainer doesn't hurt much.

And speaking of entertainers, why does Tarsus have one? It doesn't need one at all.

Hmm, I wouldn't want to be a Roman citizen right now. Wake up one morning soon and find Persians all over the place. :D

Turn order:

Hi Hygro - Welcome on board!!! :jump:

Feel free - if you to make comments whenever you want. We love them. (plus now not only do you see we are working a military formation at sea with our loaded cavalerys- :slay: but we are all cooking turkey dressing too.

It's a good group you have found.

We are dif. levels in the game and learning more all the time.
I cannot tell my own knowledge (still newbie but growing due to this forum) - just playing at home was fun - but these games and teammates keep you on your toes - not just for the excellent critiques by Padma - but he offers info only as a choice never expectation -as does the rest of team - you must research and think things out yourself (or as you have recently noted - have a toddy with my relatives :).

I have learned more in the last two succ. games than ever. Still want to check out what game stwills and maybe Padma have discovered - they will let us know.;)

Again - keep checking us out and feel free to comment - we can all take the :cringe: with the :)
