CTDs on huge maps

After some playing (15 min or so) I am having ctds in the late game on 18civ huge maps. Graphics settings are at medium, all animations possible disabled. Help? Can provide saves, specific errors messages, logs?

It seems huge world is too much for your computer:
- tweaking all game settings to low/off (including sounds, movies) may grant you a few minutes more to play before crashing
- closing all unnecessary programs before starting civ4 may help too

But generally:
- play smaller maps
- upgrade your hardware
- wait for further patches to that may grant more stability (I doubt it though)

I have a computer that plays Oblivion without too much of a problem on medium settings. Are you suggesting my hardware is inadequate?

Pentium 3ghz HT Northwood Core
1GB Memory in dual channel configuration
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

As far as Civ4 goes, then yes maybe. Civ4 is a huge memory hog so it's going to eat RAM for breakfast with 18 Civ Huge maps, and it could easily reach excess of 1gb. Even though the recent patches have reduced the memory load some mid-range machines similiar to what you have may struggle with Huge maps.

How much memory would you advise?

I forgot to mention this. Before 1.61 patch I would experience reboots about 75% of the time and CTDs 25% with no error message or a generic error message [Sorry, windows blah] after 3-6 min of play

After patch seems to be about 15 min and have not had a reboot yet. In addition the CTDs I experience seem to be generated by a Gamebryo prorietary subroutine which mentions that it failed to allocate video memory and references specific line(s) of code. I didnt write these down but perhaps I should.

Help?

I have 2gb and haven't had any crashes since 1.61 came out, although huge maps are very slow.

On huge maps it is really slow but no CTDs. I have a Semperon 3000+ and a EVGA 6600GT so I am not sure if it is the RAM or the rest of the system that makes it so slow on huge maps.

Try running Prime95 over night. If you get no errors with that then it might be time for more RAM, or there might be an issue with the program and some component of hardware.

More RAM can help the problem. Currently, I have 2gbs with no major issues. On huge maps it is very slow, even with a AMD 3800.

The bigger the map, the more ram it wants. I tend to stay away from huge maps, or turn down my graphics settings.

Just curious. I have done quite a bit of looking into heat problems in another thread and more specifically Video card heat. It seems for whatever reason that Civ4 is an extreme workout for a video card.

I am just curious for those that are crashing, what temp readings do you have on your video card?
