CTIV-1: The Turtle Game

Apparently someone forgot to tell Dreylin what you're supposed to do in a phony war :rolleyes: ;) :woohoo:

You're right though about Combustion. We might also want to start guarding our fishing nets.

Remember, once we get Medicine, we want to kick off a golden age and get hospitals in all our cities (well, maybe not portland). So make sure it's queued properly.

Um, yeah. :blush:

Well I'd set my sights on that spot when I was doing my pre-turn review (extra health resource in a defensible spot), so when I saw that GW had taken it I was a little upset and thought I could give it a try.

When I saw the odds, I came to the conclusion that the 3 Infantry in that Galleon probably wouldn't be enough and I'd hold off and let the others catch up - which would be beyond my turn and we could discuss whether or not to go through with it. So I was taking the Screenie to justify my decision, when suddenly :eek: to see them attacking!

I believe the appropriate adage is: "Better to be Lucky than Good!" :lol:

(I'd still like someone to explain why the AI went and built a Worker on a 1tile island!) :smoke:

We have 3-4 Frigates stationed in cultural waters around the coast, but nothing on the nets to our West yet ... could probably have something there in a couple of turns, though.

I really think we should get rid of some of our most obsolete units though, to reduce the upkeep costs and because the cost of upgrading is really steep. We've got Archers in many cities and even Warriors still hanging about! We've got a very productive Civ, and with Factories starting to complete in the next couple of turns we can pump out new units if needed.

Sorry, Ucel01 took me more then I thought, so I won't start it today. You can either wait 24 hours more or I can swap the turn with chriseay.

You're still well within your window, so I wouldn't worry about it... unless chriseay wants to jump in because now is better than later?

I'll give Ucel his time, the end of the week and the weekend are always better for me.

Precheck
Communism in 4, I'll take Combusion->Flight to build up some air support
Wash is really away, so I won't plan any offensive yet.
And he is already furious, it means he can want to speak :)

<START!>

1) 1910

Gao captured by Spanish. Quick check: MM has 3 cities now.

2) 1912
zzzzz

3) 1914
Lahore: Factory->Colosseum (just to prevent WW)
Karachi: Factory->Coal Plant (we have place for unhealthness here)
Hyderabad: Lib->Temple
Portland: Theatre

Portland is now well defended (4 inf), Missionary reached the city as well.

4) 1916
Communism->Combusion
Ouch, we can't switch to State Property. What a pity :(

5) 1918
Delhi: Factory->Cannon
Madras: Infantry->Factory
Jaipur: Market->Factory

6) 1920
Izzy wants Steel and is sure I won't dissappoin her. Really sure Izzy?

Calcuta: Factory->Cannon

7) 1921
Izzy likes me. Now she wants to help us against Mali. No Izzy, you won't help us I won't help you. Basta!
Lahore: Colosseum->Inf (still no WW)
Karachi: Coal Plant->Scotland Yard
Hyderabad: Temple->University

8) 1922
Delhi: Cannon->Cannon
Calcuta: Cannon->Cannon

Kepler born in Delhi. Great, I forgot I should have research Med instead of Combustion. But we need Destroyers too.
I leave our Scientist untouched for the next player. He can support Electricity with 1887 buckets.
And George has Artilery by now...

9) 1923
Calcuta: Cannon->Machine Gun

10) 1924
Combustion->Medicine (for those hospitals)

Lahore: Infantry->Research (really I think we have enough military to squash both Hatsy and Eli, so let's make some more creative)
Hatsy finished Mahabhodi and got some cash from our cities :(

11) 1925
Delhi Cannon->Research
Ankh: Factory->Research
Medicine dropped from 6 to 5

State for now:
Liz and George have Artilery, others are even or worse to us.
We have lost no unit, so we don't have WW yet.
This war is really tough for George, he's blow Izzy in power now.
Good luck!

Combustion before Medicine was fine, I think with GW having Combustion we wanted it as well for defensive measures.

It took Hattie until 1924 to finish Mahabhodi?!? :eek:

Remember, kick off a Golden Age once we get Medicine in and hospitals queued. Save Kepler (and subsequent GPs) for the final Golden Age during the Spaceship Push (I hope).

Let's get some destroyers out there (maybe want to upgrade existing boats instead of building new ones) to guard our borders and fishing boats.

Ok, here's a question. In a game today, I wanted to start a golden age. It was my first, so it only required 2 GP. I had an engineer that I wanted to save, so I figured if I selected the two I wanted to use (artist and merchant) I would save the engineer. No. Apparently the game selects two random great people if you have more than you need. Now the question: Does anyone know if there is a way you can select which great people to use in the generation of a golden age?

Oh, and I got it.....should be able to play tomorrow, if not definitely Saturday morning or early afternoon.

Turn 0/1925 AD - Upgrade 2 frigates to destroyers for fishing net protection, the rest of the navy can wait, though it'll need to be either upgraded or replaced as well. Everything else looks good, so let's go.

Turn 1/1926 AD - Mansa comes asking us to declare war on the Spanish. A big fat no is sent back his way. Calcutta MG -> MG

Turn 2/1927 AD - Lizzy finishes SoL. This time I remember that we can't build world wonders. ;) Otherwise just moving workers around trying to make sure all mines and lumbermills get railroaded first.

Turn 3/1928 AD - Nothing.

Turn 4/1929 AD - Monty declares on Washington. This'll make our war with him even more fake. Karachi Scotland Yard -> Wealth

Turn 5/1930 AD - Medicine -> Electricity. I guess I get to start the GA again. We also get the 100 turn message. I don't know that we'll be able to get to space in time. I start the golden age, and it looks like this. I'll switch to a hospital in Karachi next turn, I didn't want to waste the bank.

Turn 6/1931 AD - nada.

Turn 7/1932 AD - Just railroading.

Turn 8/1933 AD - Caluctta Hospital -> Coal Plant. Karachi Hospital -> Research.

Turn 9/1934 AD - Washington dials me up for peace. I accept.
peace9hk.jpg

Delhi Hospital -> Research

Turn 10/1935 AD - Electricity -> Flight. Calcutta Coal Plant -> Research. Hospital -> Coal Plant in Lahore. Here's a look at the GA boosted demographics.
demograph7mp.jpg

Yeah, we might not be able to get Space, but remember the goal of the game wasn't to win but to work through the game to see all of its aspects. Fortunately, we got a great start so we've been more successful than I honestly expected, so maybe we'll get a score win.

Got it. Will play tomorrow.

Turn 0 (1935 AD)
- 3 turns of Golden Age remaining
- Madras is starving so one of the merchants is sent to an undeveloped cottage (income drops to +6gpt)
- Bangalore will grow and enter starvation in 3 turns so I take a citizen from an ocean tile and make him a merchant to replace the one from Madras: income increases to +12gpt
- Bombay is starving due to unhappiness. Nothing I can do about this one as the free specialist cannot be removed. Build more farms next time :)
- Lahore will starve once the coal plant is built in 3 turns so I halt growth. Another merchant = +18gpt
- I change the artist at Jaipur into a merchant (+24gpt)
Ankh-Morpork finishes: Hospital
Karachi grows: 15

Turn 1 (1936 AD)
- Liz's Golden Age begins
- I send a free worker to change an undeveloped cottage at Bombay into a farm
Jaipur finishes: Hospital

Turn 2 (1937 AD)
- Washington wants to trade us fur for wine, but we are not into furries...
Delhi grows: 16
Lahore finishes: Coal Plant
Jaipur finishes: Factory
Portland finishes: Theatre
Golden Age ends

Turn 3 (1938 AD)
Jaipur begins: Aqueduct
- Farm completed at Bombay, which is no longer starving as a result. Unfortunately, it can't grow any further either without destroying a town.
Lahore grows: 13

Turn 4 (1939 AD)
- Isabella demands Democracy from us. I actually agree to this because her power rating has climbed dramatically and her army is now larger than ours! Giving her Democracy shouldn't put us at a disadvantage anyway.

Madras finishes: Hospital
Bangalore finishes: Hospital

Turn 5 (1940 AD)
Bangalore finishes: Factory
Jaipur finishes: Aqueduct

Turn 6 (1941 AD)

turtlegibbon.jpg

Jaipur begins: University
Bangalore begins: Coal Plant
- Isabella makes peace with Mansa Musa
Tech learned: Flight
Karachi grows: 16
Portland's borders expand

Turn 7 (1942 AD)

sorenswatch.jpg

Research begun: Artillery
Karachi begins: Fighter
Bombay finishes: Hospital
Karachi finishes: Fighter

Turn 8 (1943 AD)
Karachi begins: Fighter
- Liz's Golden Age has ended
Bombay finishes: Factory
Kolhapur finishes: Hospital

Turn 9 (1944 AD)
Bombay begins: Colosseum
Kolhapur begins: Market
Karachi finishes: Fighter

Turn 10 (1945 AD)
Karachi begins: Fighter

Notes:
- Washington still has a stack of troops at Hastings: keep an eye on it! (the cease-fire has now expired)

- I've turned science down to 70% for Artillery to get a cash bonus while keeping up research time.

I probably won't be playing until tomorrow night, but I'll try to do it tonight after I finish CTIV-2.

Turn 0 -- 1945 AD

The question on everyone's mind ... can we last until the end?!?

As Space Race might be our best bet, I decide a Scientific focus is necessary. Specialists are adjusted accordingly. I'm tempted to use our 2 GPs for research, but they basically only save one turn off Radio or Fission, I'd rather save them for a possible Golden Age (still need 2 more to do so, though). I also convert AM to Wealth rather than Culture, as we have enough culture pumping against Heliopolis -- but I'll keep an eye on it.

Turn 1 -- 1946 AD

Monty wants us to attack Washington. Tempting but no.

Turn 2 -- 1947 AD

Ibid. Strike that, reverse it.

Mali wants us to donate Electricity. He's shocked when I turn him down.

Liz wants to open herself to me. She wants me to explore her. Nahh. (What's with the AI this turn?)

Artillery is in. Fascism is up. Due in 3.

Karachi: Fighter > Artillery (need to play with the new toy)

Turn 3 -- 1948 AD

Mansa wants Open Borders. No dice.

Jaipur: University > Colosseum

I drop science back to 70%, and start AM on a fighter.

Turn 4 -- 1949 AD

Bangalore: Coal Plant > Fighter

Turn 5 -- 1950 AD

Fascism is in. Industrialism selected, due in 7 (let's get the Aluminum before starting Apollo Project)

AM: Fighter > Infantry
Madras: Factory > Colosseum
Karachi: Artillery > Fighter

I keep the Artillery in Karachi just in case GW's troops in Hastings get fresh.

Turn 6 -- 1951 AD

Bombay: Colosseum > Barracks

Isabella adopts Free Speech, State Property, and Free Religion.

I start railroading our borders in our to ensure a hasty response to any trespassers.

Turn 7 -- 1952 AD

Karachi: Fighter > Colosseum
Jaipur: Colosseum > Drydock (Hey, they're healthy!)

Monty goes for Representation.
Galileo is BIFAL. Hopefully not a Christian one! (I can make that joke, I'm Catholic)

I rearrange the Wealth/Research choices and up Science to 90%, giving us Industrialism in 4.

Turn 8 -- 1953 AD

AM: Infantry > Wealth

Turn 9 -- 1954 AD

Bangalore: Fighter > Infantry
Bombay: Rax > Walls

Calcutta's and Bombay's borders expand.

Turn 10 -- 1955 AD

Hattie wants open borders. I decline.

Karachi: Colosseum > Fighter.

Ok, well, not much happened. Built a bunch of fighters in order to deploy them across cities ... you know, just in case (bunkers might not be a bad idea).

Industrialism due next turn. Hopefully we'll have some Aluminum. We should do Rocketry next (probably should dial science down) and start working on Apollo, imo.
