CTIV-9: The Academians

Also, when I have built enough units (1 of 5, 2 of 5, ... 5 of 5 of Unimatrix 0) I up the unimatrix number by 1, randomly select a new 'of ?' number and start counting up by 1 again.

Maybe renaming the capital "Delta Quadrant" would be a better idea.

 :mischief:

Actually, I rather like the sound of that as it is also somehow reminiscent of the civic nomenclature of Mao's spiritual successor, Chairman Yang.

OK, I've played and typically, my logger didn't work (I upgraded it before I went on holiday, but it didn't keep my path settings, so no log).

Thus, my beautifully crafted notes are lost forever, but luckily, the turns were quiet.

Main points are that we got the circumnavigation bonus and Astronomy is upon us in three turns. Due to some Grocer builds, we are running 80% science and turning a profit. The Whales now have a whaling boat, and we've found a size 8 barb city on an island by itself.

No more Great Scientists, but there is one due soon. Ptah is building Oxford University, and apart from Worker road builds, more Grocers, Monastery's and a couple of University builds, nothing much else happened.

No good trade opportunities presented themselves, so bummer on that one, but things generally look good.

FDR cheekily built himself a city in the craplands south of our civ (screenshot), and we found Napoleon's western border whilst circumnavigating (screenshots).

Here's the save (sorry I had to zip it, my CuteFTP trial version run out and I've yet to find a good free replacement).

WinFTP crashes my laptop for some unknown reason...

Ruff's up!

1. Don't lose the game.

2. Build an Academy if you get a Great Scientist.

3. Don't lose the game.

I hope you mean ... "don't misplace your CIV 4 CD" ... because it will take me longer than 10 turns to get defeated by these AIs.

Just a thought...Ptah already has one National Wonder and is currently building Oxford University as its second...it seemed like the best choice at the time, however, I thought that if this is our main GP outlet, it may be better to change this to National Epic for the boost in GP production.

12 of one and a dozen of the other?

Just thought I'd make you aware of the possibility.

Played - will report tomorrow morning.
Spoiler :
still alive - phew

We start my round third in score behind Napoleon - 31 pts back. And there is still one CIV that we are yet to meet. I check the diplomatic front ... Mansa Musa has Drama, Divine Right, Banking, Drama, Nationalism and Engineering up on us on the tech front - but doesn't have Printing Press.

I trade Printing Press for World Map, Banking, Drama and 1330 in gold. Getting the world map introduces us to the missing CIV ... Huayna Capac who is leading in score by 33%! I pay him a visit and learn that he is behind in tech (has engineering but not lit, drama, theology, philo or paper). That said, he does have 15 cities ... about 5 ex-spanish. I also call up Roosevelt and trade printing press to him for world map, 90 gold and engineering. Finally, I change civics to Caste System and Pacifism. I change all cities to max food and find that the best GP city is Nanjing with +11, ... so, I go GP crazy at Nanjing (5 scientists) and +45 GPPs per turn (unfortunately, we have about a 70% chance of getting a prophet - yuk).

Turn 4 brings in Astronomy and I set the tech to Replacement parts for the lumber mills. I am spending that gold we just got on trades by running at 100% science (-64 per turn). Huayna is back trading corn for rice (yes). Napolean drops in on Turn 5 and demands Ivory. I check the power graph and give it to him. He is way powerful v us. After the diplomatic screen closes, I check the map and find that he is also a fair number of sea tiles away from us ... oh well, feel free to cancel that when possible.

I trade Astronomy to Roosevelt for Economics, World Map and 90 gold. I also trade Astronomy and 60 gold to Mansa for Music and Divine Right and cow for deer to Huayna - I then sell him Ivory for 14 gold per turn.

On round 8 we pop a Great Priest. Best not to print what I said when I got that message. I also revolt to slavery, Free Market and Organized Religion. Unfortunately, there is still 1 turn of revolt remaining - sorry. I suggest that you reconfigure various cities back to max-hammers to finish of the Heroic Epic and National Epic.

What - didn't I tell you about those. I put the National Epic in Nanjing and the Heroic Epic in our best hammer city (the one just to the NE of Nanjing - who can remember these names).

Here is the GP configuration for Nanjing ...

Roosevelt will trade Nationalism for Replacement parts plus 630 gold or gunpowder for replacement parts (maybe some gold involved - I cannot remember). The tech slider is set at 0% as I couldn't decide which way to go and was going to leave that to the team (options are scientific method, gunpowder or nationalism). We also have a GP Priest that we can do something with - options?

Other than that, I build units (knights and num-chucks mainly).

Oh - and by turns end, we were third, just 3 points back from Mansa Musa but still 550 behind Huayna.

Do we have a victory condition in mind yet?

Nice set of turns there. I would think we'd want to build the Shrine with the Great ProfitProphet. I'll take a look at the save tonight and should have more comments.

Great turnset, although shame about the GP. I say sacrifice him for a shrine...extra money is always nice. I thought the victory condition was going to be a space race, since that seems to be the more "sciency" thing to do.

Brrrrrr...just got a shiver thinking about the last time we tried to get space race in a CTIV game and ended up spending oodles of money on Spy's to stop other people getting there first...we delayed them a lot but it was not to be...

While I agree with the trading, I'm getting little :twitch: from the thought of sending Printing Press to Mansa. No biggie.

@JesusOnEez, I don't think that'll happen this time. I hope. :twitch:

Guys, obligatory cut'n'paste from the OoP thread:

I will be on an auto-skip period from 9 July (my time, 24 hrs from now) to 22 July. During afore-stated period, I should still have Internet access, so will post a Got-It if I have time to play. However, whenever the next player can play, just grab it ... don't need to wait 24 hrs before skipping me.

Happy Academizing.

Ok, no time for a full report...

I never did like the name New Bejing, so I changed it to Alhazad. (Gee, I wonder why the name change)

Learned Nationalism, and also traded Nappy liberalism + gold for Gunpowder.

Chemistry is due next turn.

Nothing else too exciting, builder's turnset all the way...
