Yeah, I know a lot of cult films and cult video games, but I don't know a lot of cult bands/musicans and albums. The only cult bands/musicians I know of are Captain Beefheart and The Grateful Dead and the only cult albums I know of are Trout Mask Replica. So ca anyone please name some more cult bands/musicians and albums?

Frank Zappa is cultish I suppose . I highly recommend either Apostrophe or Overnight Sensation . Frank was in The Mothers of Invention with Captain Beefheart by the way .

If by cult we mean dedicated fan following but slightly out of the mainstream , then Fairport Convention are brilliant . Leige and Leith is considered the classic album . Whilst outside of the rock genre , Waylon Jennings has a hugely dedicated following .

Parliament / Funkadelic if you feel like getting funky . Dusty Springfield if you feel like getting soulful .

I'm not really your "go to guy" for more modern stuff though . Most of the acts I have mentioned are reasonably well known , however they have a following of obsessive fans that far outweighs their level of mainstream success

EDIT.....this actually really got me thinking , especially if the criteria is that you are not solely after weird music , but quality too . So many genres have their cult faves .

Jerry Lee Lewis , a monster of 50's rock n roll but often overshadowed . Thelonius Monk if you want some really quirky jazz . Jefferson Airplane are , for me , the quintessential psychedelic 60's group . The Kinks are unique amongst the British Invasion groups . Mickey Newbury is one of the all time great American singer songwriters and sadly unappreciated .

Once again I stress many of these artists I have not selected for the quirkiness of their music unlike Beefheart of Zappa , but for the esteem they are held in by their fans

I guess My Bloody Valentine probably counts. Their landmark album Loveless has quite the following.

Neutral Milk Hotel also probably counts as well then. In An Aeroplane Over the Sea has a devoted following.

One of the best ever.

A couple of others that spring to mind...

Guided By Voices - Alien Lanes or Bee Thousand would be the best albums
Slint - Spiderland
Gang of Four - Entertainment
Underground Lovers - Leaves Me Blind (a good Aussie cult band!)

I think you need to be more specific. I'm guessing "cult bands/albums" refers to artists or albums that have created or contributed greatly to certain genres. That is how i always understood the term "cult films / games".

But if you are referring to games/movies/artists with "cult following" - that's an entirely different story.

Anyway i will use my definition to give some examples. Of those mentioned:
-My Bloody Valentine's Loveless is very important to shoegaze/dreampop.
-Slint's Spiderland to post-rock
-Frank Zappa & Captain Beefheart both have cult albums because they contributed greatly to weird music and being weird in general.
-Neutral Milk Hotel is important to bland indie pop :mischief:

I guess you should be more specific what kind of music you'd want cult albums of tho.

most black metal and death metal bands are cult bands. Because only a specific audience cares for their music.

As an example I'll list Celtic Frost. I have linked their videos on here before. They are european, so they are very obscure in the U.S. I only know of a couple people that have heard of them.
