The Byzantine Empire official ended in 1453 with the fall a Constantinople.
Now I know that the Prince Heir of the Paleologue dynasty, Thomas, was chased by the Turks from Patras some days later...
Oh but you said captured by non-Turks...

I KNOW!

I just thought of it. It has to be Candia (Crete)!
In this case Venice would be the conqueror...

What do you say?

You're getting warmer...

Hint #4 - It did indeed fall to the Venetians, in 1463. - they were not the initial conquerors.

I'm trying this without a book so I may not be right either...

Cyprus?

nope!

Hint #6: It fell, ironically enough, (at least to me) to The Papacy!

(am I too obscure here? - then again this IS trivia!)

Sounth-west Peloponese?

I'm saying that because I know that the region around Pilos has changed hands many times in history between Venetians and Turks.

Gees. So many posts and still that same question. Now I don't know the answer, but I could make a list and be sure it's in there.

Pilos, wasn't that the city where the old Nestor came from?

And I'm proud to say: 'Ich bin ein Civfanatics Official Reviewer!'

This question seems very hard, so I'm going to cheat and put a list up. These are all cities that exist today, so if the one we're looking for was destroyed or something then we're in trouble. Right:
Patras
Corinth
Argos
Pirgos
Megalopolis
Sparta
It should be one of these, as I assume that it must be quite a big city to have survived since the 15th century. I won't post another question as I've got no way of knowing if I'm right and the web encyclopedias aren't a lot of help beyond Peloponnese.

Until now I haven't had difficulty answering to questions refering to Greece and most of the time without help from books.
Now I've opened ALL the books I have!
And still I can't come up with an answer.
If it's not South west peloponese as I said I'll go crazy!

We just have to wait until Magnus comes back and tells us if one of the guesses is right or gives us yet another clue. How come someone from Sweden knows so much about Greek geography? (All right, one thing, but it's obscure) Don't go

Az, it's only a bit of fun.

Now my problem with the question is the bit about the Papacy. Pius II was Pope at the time; and having checked some sources on his tenure as Pope, I find no record of the Papacy successfully acquiring any land in Greece during his reign, although he did die en route to Ancona in 1464 in order to commence a "crusade" against the Ottoman Empire.

Venice seems a more probable candidate; however, likely candidates Monemvasia, Naupactus/Lepanto, Preveza, etc, just don't fit the criteria.

I give up.

Monemvasia is the answer!

In 1461 this fortress at the tip of the Laconian coast was ceded to the Pope. It was taken by the Venetains in 1463 or 1464 depending on what sourse you read.

If you need my source, I will post it on an edit.

Andu Indorin, you are next!

Unfortunately, every source I've encountered has Monemvasia under Catalan/Papal rule from 1460 to 1464; then Venetian rule from 1464 to 1540, when it was conquered by the Ottomans during the conquest of Morea. For example, ...

and, ...

If 1460 is the year of acquisition, the Trebizond (1461) is the more correct answer to the quesiton.

According to my source:
http://www.friesian.com/romania.htm#last

"...last piece of Romania (Byzantine Empire), the fortress of Monemvasia, ceded to the Pope in 1461."

from the same source regarding Trebizond:

"A very poor excuse for an "empire," Trebizond spent much of its existence in vassalage to the Mongols and Turks who ruled the plateau behind it. It started,
however, with an heir to the Comneni and a reasonable ambition of moving on to
Constantinople. After realistic chances of that past, Trebizond ended up with the dubious honor of being the last of the Greek states to fall to the Ottomans."

The source goes on to say that although Trebizond had the same family (Palaeologi) in charge as 'Romania', it was independent. It lists kings of both Romania and Trebizond separately and they are not the same people. They make the assumption that Trebizond was a Greek state, yet Monemvasia was a Roman Fortress that held out for 1 year after the rest of Morea fell.

Wow!

How comes I had never heard of this whole story?!?!?!??!
I found interesting reading aabout it though! Thanx Magnus and Andu...!

Andu your turn!

(BTW this is only the 3rd question!!!)

My Answer: Finland/Karelia

(sorry about not numbering my previous question!)
