No, it is not under water. I am looking for what landmass it is on.

There is a difference, a mountian can have several peaks. And what is with the hostility? I wasn't saying you were wrong, but the one who posted the question is considered the authority on the answer and until they say 'aye', then it is only courteous to wait.

I don't need to wait, and who the hell does anyway? I am right and I have shown the link that proves it. And you are wrong about a mountain having several peaks. I am from the mountains and each peak has a name, Mt. suchandsuch. Mountain and peak are synominous. You really should get your facts straight before you go accusing people of jumping the gun. The hostility is because I am sick and f-ing tired of being corrected everytime I post on these blasted furums!!

Fine.

I am going to assume I was right and post my own question.

What was the last place lost by the Eastern Roman Empire and who 'took' it? Hint: it was after the fall of Constantinople.

Right about what? You didn't answer his question!! Play by the rules man! To reitterate, my question was: Where is the oldest mountain chain in the world? (it is not underwater)

Look Iroquois. The rules were simple.

NUMBER your questions and WAIT for confirmation.

ANYWAY let's just forget about all this. Iroquois forget it please. No one's against you

Andu could you please post the right answer and ask something else since it has been answered wrong three times already...

It was anwered right. I gave the correct answer. If you would bother to follow the link I gave in my answer you would see... (Not that I want to make you have to go to all that hassle!)

Well I just went there ( http://www.xpmexico.com/bimo01i.html ) and I must admit it's pretty comfusing. It took me some time to try to understand and...I still don't get it!!!
But Iroquois you probably are still wrong.

Well, for the record, Popocatepetl is the 2nd highest in Mexico, 5th highest in North America. The answer to question is La Malinche (elev. 4461m, 14,636 ft). Named after the interpreter, mistress, and advisor of Cortez during his conquest of the Aztecs; she proved instrumental in forging the alliance between Cortez and the Tlaxcalan tribe, without whose support, the conquest of Mexico by Cortez would have remained in doubt. (The peak is less commonly called by its Nauhtl name, Matlalcueyetl).

(Incidently, Popocatepetl is Nauhtl for "Smoking Giant" as it has been active since the time of the Aztecs; and Ixtaccihuatl, Popo's companion in both geography and Aztec myth, is Nauhtl for "Sleeping Lady.")

As for the "Mexican Summits" page, they are basically listing every significant outcrop/subpeak of these Volcanos; for example, with Ixtaccihuatl, they have listed the summit elevations for "breast", "head", "feet", plus other notably outcrops.

As for the oldest mountain chain in the world, if I recall my paleogeology correctly, it would be the "Laurentian Mountain Chain"; since the break up of Pangaea, the parts of this range are to be found in eastern N. America (the Appalachians, plus the ranges of the Gaspe Peninsula, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland); and northwestern Europe (the Cambrians and Pennines of England, and the Highlands of Scotland, and -- I think -- parts of the Scandanavian ranges).

You are correct! The mountain chain (or what's left of it ) is actually east of the Apalacians in N. America. The erosion of this mountain chain is why the piedmont area of the eastern seaboard is so hilly. I wish I could have been here before the Europeans arrived and tore everything up.

I tip my hat to Magnus, awaiting his question...

(

to Iriquois)

OK: what was was the very last holding of the Eastern Roman (sometimes incorrectly called Byzantine) Empire? And who took possession of it? (extra credit

)

I know this is kinda a historical question, but it is a place, so I count is as geography too.

was it constantanople / istanbull? (they're the same city I do believer)

and I think it was the turkish empire that took the city down.

Hint: this 'fell' 8 years after Constantinople.

In 1461 the Emperor David Comnenos surrendered the Empire of Trebizond to the Sultan Mehmet of the Ottoman Turks and was the last holding of the Byzantine(I thought it was Greek?)Empire. Thus completing the transformation into the Ottoman Empire.

hmmm, Iroquois, I thought Trebizond was independent of the Empire of the Romans (as they referred to themselves). However, that is not the place I seek. The year is correct, however. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>

Hint #2 - it was a fortress.
