(a) Reign of Kublai Khan begins
(b) Signing of Magna Carta
(c) Rudolph I of Habsburg named King
(d) Beginning of Inquisition

B: 1215, King John at Runnymede
D: 1233, under the auspices of the Dominican Order
A: 1260, elected Khan; 1271 founded Yuan Dynasty
C: 1273, elected Holy Roman Emperor

Who is traditionally considered the founder of "Russia" and what was his nominal occupation before his elevation?

Rurik. He was a Viking chieftain, but I'm not really sure what you mean by "occupation". Was he doing something else as well?

Edit: Forgot to add a new question.

Okay: The word "Inca" as used in English (and probably the other European languages as well) to refer to the empire that used to exist in Peru actually comes from the Quechua word for "king". What did the Inca themselves actually call their empire?

I'm beginning to guess that in Hellas there is a course taught in the history of democracy. If so, I wish we had a similar course in the U.S.

If Turkey counts as Europe, my answer is Turkey; if not counted, then Spain. But these are only educated guesses ... so, I really don't know.

Sorry, I really needed to be more specific when I framed the question: following Tim the Enchanter's example with the "Godwin" question, and yours with Incas: "The viking Rurik is considered the founder of Russia. What was is nominal occupation?"

The answer that I reaching for would have been: As a viking mercenary he served in the Emperor's Varangian Guard in Constantinople; hence the name of the short-lived Varangian Dynasty.

Sorry. But seeing some of these trivia questions are making me just plain sloppy.

[Still want to no if Pilsudski's effort were the intended answer to the "invasion of Moscow" question: cause I cannot think of any other candidate after c.1612.]

Turkey is a "laic" state. By the time father Kemal (attatuk means father of the turks) took power, women were granted the wright to vote.

Actually I didn't formulated my question well. I meant which European democratic country because. Otherwise the last state would be Russia.

Ok so which was the last "western country" to adopt Female sufrage?

  1. In 1914 the Austrian-Hungarian Crown Prince was shot in Sarajevo by a Serbian student and nationalist. Austria-Hungary and Serbia got to war after an ultimatum by A-H. The Russians helped the Serbs, the Germans A-H, etc., etc.
  2. Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Australia, South-Africa, England/Great-Britain, Italy, Japan, the US, Russia, Turkish Empire, France, Belgium, all their colonies, occupied Europe.
  3. The Germans capitulated. Germany had no money, the citizens were starving, weapn production was bad, inflation was very high, too many battles were lost (there were more German deads than Entente soldiers). Emperor/Kaiser Wilhelm II went to Holland. Versailles treaty was signed. The end.
  4. none

Which was the first country to defeat the axis on the battleground during WWII and where?

The question a little vague ...
I'd say that first significant set back for the Axis powers was the Wavell/O'Conner offensive in Egypt and Cyrenica against the Italians, beginning 9 Dec. 1940.

On the other hand, the English, French and Norwegians did finally get around to forcing the Germans out of Narvik on May 28, 1940 -- the same day that the evacuation of Dunkirk began.

Depends the definition of size and duration of the "Battle" and on the beginning of the war

The first campaign/major battle lost by the axis after Sept 1, 1939 was the defeat of the Italians by the Greeks in Greece/Albania in the fall of 1940.

Before that there were some local defeats in Europe involving less than 2 days and less than corps strength.
Also before the Sept 1939 date, the Chinese had inflicted one loss in a major battle against the Japs, as had the Russians.

Pass the question, I have some work pilling up here.

Yup. Hehe I was talking about Greece again!

The next question should come from either Lefty Scaevola or Wilemoranije since they answered correctly.
