LouLong - 6 1/2

1. When/why did the reign of Napoleon III end?

-Specifically at the Battle of Sedan during the Franco-Prussian war 1870-71, when he fled after a decisive defeat

2. What was the decisive and ending battle of the Russo-Japanese war 1904-1905?

-Battle of Tsushima

3. Who was the first man in space and what was the name of his spaceship?

-Yuri Gagarin in the Vostok I

4. Who is the 14th islamic historian/writer who traveled 10's of thousands of miles throughout the muslim world, whose writing are commonly used as sources for the time?

5. Name two other cities considered to be the "next Rome."

6. What was Justinian I's head general whose conquest was meant to return the Byzantine empire to its old glory?

-Belisarius

7. Name three "gods" of Ancient Greek mythology who created the earth. Bonus-Name the fourth

-I think I worded this one poorly as of what I meant. The Gods who created the world according to the greeks was Chaos, Uranus, Gaia and Aether. But, other gods were "present" in spirit or form according to some sources. So answers like Eros, tartarus and a few others were acceptable

8.What was the part of Egypt touching the mediterranean called?

-Lower Egypt

9. What do the words Gi, Yu, Jin, Rei, Makoto, Meiyo and Chugi refer too?

-The Bushido of the Japanese Samurai. Respectively meaning: Rectitude, Courage, Benevolence, Respect, Honesty, Honor and Loyalty

10. What two famous actions occured at the Battle of Balaclava?

-Charge of the Light Brigade and the Thin Red Line

okay, so LouLong wins...but I understood he will stop writing quizes for a while so unless I'm wrong I guess that means it's XIII's turn.

Anyway I don't mind the quizz. Just don't want to give the impression I am over-represented...

1/ What is the largest country in Africa ?

Eh ! Eh ! Tough history question ! Just for fun and for a change.
Actually it is Sudan, Algeria being not far behind. Zaire is not.

2/ What was Deshima ?

A small island of the coasts of Japan were Europeans (namely the Dutch) were allowed to set foot and establish in order to trade with Japan.

3/ In 1667, English took control of a continental piece of land in central America, in an otherwise Spanis-only area. The area was indeed infamous for settling because it was called the "Mosquito coast". What is it now ?

Belize. A simple look at central America today shows where English is spoken. Historically asked but a geographic answer as well.

4/ In 1839-42, the English lost a major colonization/invasion battle. What country/area saw that defeat, one of the main of the colonization era ?

It was Afghanistan. IIRC they left only 13 survivors of the entire army with bagages and some families, just so they could spread the word of the English defeat.

5/ Who was leader of the Zulus during the Zulu wars ?

Well, maybe the question was not clear but I meant the war between Zulus and English. Shaka was long dead. Cetewayo was in charge of the Zulus then.

6/ What was the codename for the German invasion of Kreta during WWII ?

Mercuy / Merkur operation

7/ What is a "ceorl" ?

A man of low-medium social status but free in Anglo-Saxon Britain. They made up a large part of the population (different from the continent) and being free they made the army.

8/ At what council (date and name) did the Pope convince the princes to organize the first crusade ?

1095 Clermont (in central France) council led by Urbain II

9/ Who was the last king of Macedonia before it was incorporated into the rising Roman Empire ?

No more Philips !!! The kings of Macedonia were Antigonids 290 BC roughly. The last monarch of thus dynasty was called Perseus (a strange name since they would most of the time either be called Demetrios or Antigonos)

10/ What city-states were allied with Babylon while Hammurabi started to extend his domination ? (and before he turned on them lol).

Difficult question indeed. Latest infos tell us Babylon allied with Mari and Larsa against the others before attacking its ex-allies after the conquest of their first opponents.

Pawpaw is the winner, so his turn it is.
