Okay, this is bad. I lost my original answer sheet, which had on it a hard-to-spell answer to question #6, so I cannot give the answers until I find that. (Its not Zhukov -- it was a minor artillery general. Stalin was so enraged at this that he ordered a second surrender, where Zhukov was the rep.)

Pawpaw did win, however. I will post the answers as soon as I get all of them.

I'd debate your answer for 4. There were a wide variety of reasons he believed he had a legitamite claim, not least of which was the one I raised as primary. Since Harold had sworn an oath of fealty, the pious William belived him to be swearing vassalage, and thus he had the only legit claim to the throne.

the reigning king named him as heir--that a pretty good claim. harold had no claim to the throne ( the nobles put him up because after the years of danish rule they didn't want another non english king again ).

To be fair number 4 has a number of answers, all of which are quite valid. Edward's declaration may now be seen to be the most important, but back in 1066 the oath Harold swore when shipwrecked in Normandy shortly before was done on Saints bones. To break the oath as he did was seen as "heretical". This was very important to William as it gave his attempt foreign and religious support, making his claim stand out above the others even further, almost like a crusade.

Aah, forget it. Have too much to do already; don't wanna add more work to my list. Hudson can do it.

Sorry guys.

Dragonlord: 4
North King: 3
Redtooth: 3

I should also add that the question about the Franco-Prussian war apparently has two answers, an interim and final treaty. In fairness, anyone who gets either will earn a point :) This is why Dragonlord's total just rose by a point :)

But you won't get two for both :D

10) Cromwell's Western Design was an attempt to wrest the carribean from Spain, initially targetting Barbados. Unfortunately, in typical English style, the combine operations took on a note of farce. On Barbados, the Spanish had paid a bounty per english head brought back to the slaves, who gladly accepted. The slaves would hide in tall grasses and undergrowth and ambush the English forces who were confined to roads and woefully underarmed (believe it or not the English, either by a mistake didn't bring pikes, or the navy "hid" them to sell later, they ended up making makeshift ones in the caribean out of cabage stalks!). The English came to fear these attacks, and after failing at Barbados they instead attacked Jamaica, an easier target. Arriving there they landed an advanced party on the beach only to hear rustling in the undergrowth nearby. Panicked by this and fearing another attack they fled back to the boats and off to the waiting ships. After finally re-starting the attack and capturing the island (Spain didn't much bother to defend it to be frank) they discovered what had caused the noise. Local people told them that the noise was a whole load of land crabs!

It was a tie between superbeaverinc and bigfatron, but as bigfatron gave more detail in a couple of answers, and got the closest on question 10 (he mentioned the slave bounty) I'll pass it onto him :)
