Cumulative PM-based History Quiz

Maybe if we space out more time between the quizzes, then we can get more to participate? Some of us don't log into here every day. ;) I decided on 3 days, for the first one...

Otherwise, I don't think there's any help for it - these quizzes are not exactly easy... :ack:

Timbuktu. 80% got this one right.

4 people answered the quizz, or so it seems. How did you get 20 or 80 % :crazyeye:

I might have an idea to attract more attention for I like the principle of this quizz.
Maybe to set it up weekly (of course I know more time probably means more "cheaters") and to publish it on the cover page would attract mre attention + attaract new people to History + would generate more news on the front page. What do you think, especially XIII (as a mod) ?

New Quizz ! 3 days to answer it by sending me a PM.

1/ The Russian alphabet's name is coming from a person's name. Which one ?

2/ What was the first city founded by the Spanish on Latin American "mainland" ?

3/ How did the Romans get the province of Asia ?

4/ What was the "family name" of the Greek rulers of Egypt ? Be careful, there is one trick.

5/ What country's king was the first black African ruler to become baptized apart from Ethiopia. Hint : it is much later. Bonus : What country christianized him ?

6/ What was the nickname of Frederick the first of Prussia ?

7/ What was the center of Operations in Japanese-controlled Mandchukuo ?

8/ What was the first French-controlled area of Vietnam ? Bonus : what was it used for during the colonization era ?

9/ What battle saw the turning point of the English-French struggle in India during the 7 years' war.

10/ What was the main product of Poland exported through the Hanseatic league ?

OK, I tried to add some easier questions this time...

I think it has more to do with difficulty than with time limits
or publicity. The last 3 quizzes were pretty tough, and I think
that people are too intimidated to respond. Since I think that
the current quiz is easier, there should be some more responses.

My $.02

I got a fifth one, but they didn't get any right. It doesn't seem right to announce to the world their score.

I thought about it being weekly, and/or being on the front page. A week just seems a bit too long IMO. But three days doesn't seem long enough for it to be on the front page. Maybe 5?

Do you mean the CFC website? TF is always ok with anything good, but I'd prefer to maintain small, manageable no of 'players'.

I'd thought of starting a similar quiz in OT, but on general knowledge and was intimidated by the thought of being deluged with PMs. :)

Ok, how about a new rule of not publishing any names if you get zero answers correct (to encourage more ppl to try)? Also maybe 6-7 really easy questions, and leaving 3-4 hard ones to be the tiebreakers?

I don't think it would attract THAT much attention :D
If it is once a week or something, to advertize one or two might attract 50 people at most the first time then I think it would stabilize at roughly 20 something so I guess it is possible to manage that over 7 days, no ?

That was just an idea anyway.

Easy questions ? Now I am not sure what it means : I consider the question ten of my last quizz very simple but got only 1 correct answer, people looked for more troubles than I asked them to.

If you put it up on the mainsite, expect a deluge. ;) You can try PMing TF and see what he thinks... go ahead...

I think we can leave it at 3 days per quiz...

Yeah, I 'thought' my first quiz was very 'easy' too... We can only try. :p

just a thought--maybe we could set the quiz's up with themes--each set of 10 being about a certain era of time or section of the world, ect.... just my 1 & 1/2 cents

I disagree. IMHO it might scare even more people away, I mean all the ones who think/feel they are not specialist (and in a way you need to be to be able to answer 10 questions aout it without research) of the theme. At the moment the different angles favor different people. Now of course I have obviously failed to find the correct level for questions but I don't think that questions the principle of it or... ?

OK time for results (no more answers for quite some time).

1/ The Russian alphabet's name is coming from a person's name. Which one ?

I think everyone got that one (or they did not answer but no mistakes) : Cyrililc alphabet, coming from Cyril who christianised the Slavs.

2/ What was the first city founded by the Spanish on Latin American "mainland" ?

Most people think it is Vera Cruz but actually ealier ones were built in Panama and Colombia. The earliest city would probably be Santa Maria in Colombia but I counted correct if you said Colombus and the area.

3/ How did the Romans get the province of Asia ?

Well, they inherited it, plain and simple. Which explains why it was a senate province since it had been given in a will to the Senate of Rome. Other provinces such as Galatia became Roman in a quite similar manner.

4/ What was the "family name" of the Greek rulers of Egypt ? Be careful, there is one trick.

I said there was a trick. You all told me it was easy and you all made the mistake lol ! Ptolemees (or such) seems to be the answer but actually they are the "Lagids".

5/ What country's king was the first black African ruler to become baptized apart from Ethiopia. Hint : it is much later. Bonus : What country christianized him ?

Kongo (with a "K" then) and by Portuguese.

6/ What was the nickname of Frederick the first of Prussia ?

Maybe I should have been more precise by writing Fredereick-Wihelm. But anyway he was called the sergeant-king because of the Prussian discipline he instaured. Der Alte Frtiz (the old Fritz) was actually his son, Frederick-Wilhelm II or Freceick the Great.
Barabarossa was living during the Crusades and did not come from Prussia.

7/ What was the center of Operations in Japanese-controlled Mandchukuo ?

Moukden.

8/ What was the first French-controlled area of Vietnam ? Bonus : what was it used for during the colonization era ?

The small island of Poulo-Condor, south of Vietnam proper.
It was used failry quickly as a jail (a la bagne in Cayenne)

9/ What battle saw the turning point of the English-French struggle in India during the 7 years' war.

Plassey, by treachury if I may precise lol

10/ What was the main product of Poland exported through the Hanseatic league ?

Very simply : wheat/cereals Amber was mostly found on the coast while Poland was actually inland...

XIII won so it is his turn.

3 days.
