  2. Round 1: 4000BC - 3425BC (23 turns)

This game will be in the style of AllLeadersChallange by Sisiutil. Quoting him: “With the help of all the posters who participate, I will attempt to make the most of the leader's unique characteristics: traits, starting techs, unit, and building... ... I will post the saved game files, screenshots, and status reports here as the game progresses. Everyone then has a chance to chime in with their strategy ideas, or voice their frustration (or glee) when I make a mistake. “
A big difference none the less is that I’m a far worse player then he is, and sadly English is a 3rd language for me, so grammar mistakes will occur. I wish you all a lot of fun, and hope to have good ideas coming my way.

I will be playing as Cyrus leader of the Mongolians. Using the Beyond the Sword expansion pack and its latest patch (3.13). Difficulty level is Immortal map is Pangea and speed is Epic. Optional settings are: Unrestricted leaders, locked game assets.

A screen shot of the game settings:

I chose to play with unrestricted leaders, because I want to use horse archers, and I want them to really shine. Both Mongolian leaders have Aggressive as one of their traits which speeds up the Building of Barracks, but the free combat I promotion goes to waste if I plan to use mounted units as my main force. Also this setting might end up giving the game some unforeseen fun factor. It is after all a game feature, not a cheat. (That’s what I keep telling myself.) Cyrus´s Charismatic trait, the UB´s extra experience the imperialistic trait´s great generals all seem like nice synergies. The Difficulty level is way too high for me, but I hope to manage with your help. Game settings lend themselves for Warmongering. Locked game assets will keep me playing the game fair, even if it means losing.

Starting Position:

A great starting location. Of course it is. After all I had to regenerate for it like 10 times. The criteria I was looking for: at least one early happy resource, and cows. Cows because I want to research animal husbandry ASAP, I didn’t choose unrestricted leaders to favor my UU, to end up not using them! Difficulty level will assure this game is still struggle.

I already moved the scout NW rather hastily, because all the regenerations were making me angry, I would always end up with sea resources and silk, dye or spices:

As soon as I saw this one, I knew I would stick with it.

Strategy:

I think I should settle in place, research AH and build a pasture for the cows, while the scout looks for horses and a place for a second and third city. The blue circle to the east might indicate some corn or wheat that direction, the one to the south is too far away, and I have no clue what the one to the north might indicate. If I want to move the settler 1 square I will lose 1 turn. None of the possibilities look that attractive, but I’m open to any arguments.
Worker first would allow me to build a pasture as soon as I research AH, then I could mine the gold hills after researching mining. Meanwhile a fast warrior, and an early settler to secure horses…

What do you think?
Where to settle, what to build and what to research?

Neat idea, although do other civs get unnrestricted leaders to? Also, minor complaint, could you please try and cut down the photo size, my monitor is small and I dont have great internet speed. It took a while for this page to load.

lots of hills, but no food. how are you going to make this work? i suggest building windmills right away.

also, i don't think you should have chosen immortal. it is too hard. I am playing a game on emperor right now and struggling so much. from now on it's prince for me.

i wanted to suggest to mine the gold first for faster rsearch, but now that i think about it, AH is better, since the cow will work better for the soon emerging settler, and general growth/production.

Well I’m hoping that 1 NW 1 W is floodplains, farms on that is +2 food, calms are +2 with lighthouse +3, grassland with farms is +1, and plains with cows with pasture is +1, that lake with lighthouse is also +1, max +8 food when working 5 tiles, +2 from the center tile. True it’s not a fast regrow town, but i think it has potential. I can see this city being a production powerhouse with all those hills. Also, when building settlers and workers, which is pretty soon, those cows are worth 6 units. (3f+3h). I agree that the difficulty is very high. Not that it’s not manageable, you sea walkthroughs of people nailing it all the time. It’s hard enough for me though.

Tough start IMO - doesn't look like the kind of terrain that horses like to live in.

I'd consider moving one West and settling there. You gain a floodplains but lose a cow. However you also gain river access for future levees - which will be important if this is your future ironworks city. It will also mean you can put a two cow city up later.

Why do you have lock modified assets on? that makes it impossible for people to check for horses if you wanted someone to..
Spoiler :
there are horses though

Round 1: 4000BC - 3425BC (23 turns)

So not too many ideas here, and I really wanted to play this game, so i guess I’ll just go with my instincts in the beginning. I settled in place, and look, I got the floodplains!

Not bad, I guess. I hope i can make it in time there. I wanted to settle golden river city first..

Worker is ready, ill start on mining and a warrior. A map of my kingdom:

Should i do a chariot rush, and then Keshiks, or wait for UU before i start the war? Should i settle next to the horses right away, or is Gold City better? Any replies are welcome!

Take the one marked number 1 first. Then build on number 2, but don't dawdle. Then you can take some time getting number 3 when you're ready. A backup horse supply would help the surprise pillage or spy op...

I´m just wondering.. WHY didnt you move the settler 1NE in the beginning ? It seemed obivius to me to do that. I know you wouldnt be able to build a fishing boat but... you can do that later from another city at the coast. It will allow for better use of the terrain. Further more you do not have to research fishing.
As you are planning to use the UU and be aggressive it not likely you´ll be able to benefit from the powerfull Great lighthouse & Colossus combo for coast based cities, not to mention building them. So settling off the coast aint a big deal.

Further more.. Why didnt you move the scoute "2"E at the beginning. Always try to get the best possible picture of the starting location on the first turn !

Is that Lincoln east and south of your capitol? He seems like the only candidate for an early rush, but he's a bit far away and your capitol doesn't seem to be ready to build a large stack.

I'd suggest going for cities 1 and 2 as Gnarfflinger mentioned. City 1 looks like a real powerhouse. 2 gold hills and 5 flood plains. It even has ivory! This could make a very nice GP farm later and if you're planning on whipping up an army the food here will help a lot. City 2 seems like it's going to have a tough time growing because there's no food in its BFC. Maybe moving it 1E would help to give you more lake tiles? It'd also grab you an extra elephant. City 3 seems rather bleak to me... cows are nice, but is it any good in the long term strategy? Maybe just to grab the land, but explore more to the north first to see what other options you have.

Anyway I'd suggest building a worker ASAP and using him to chop a settler. I'd prioritize food to the capitol and getting the first two settlers out fast. Then some workers and defending archers (you'll be getting archery for horse archers anyway) and developing your three cities while going for your UU. Food food food! Hammers too. :) Then build your army and go forth and conquer.

By the way please take my advice with a grain of salt, I only play at noble... I look forward to seeing what happens! These online games are fun. It's nice to see more of them.
