Dang it. CivIII burnout.....

If firaxis set up a routine so the player would always get a good stating location, why not just ship the game with a message that says,

"congrats, you win again" everytime you start up the game.

:goodjob:

What challenge is left if you can put yourself in the ideal starting location and let the AI rot in hell?

One of the Tournament games had a very poor starting location, yet a lot of players managed to achieve the victory condition, many others didn't. This is what seperates boys from men.

It's not about winning, damn it. It's about having an interesting and enjoyable game, not a winning game. I'm not one of those people that play this game merely to get a high score. When I see people talking about milking games for score, I laugh. I couldn't care less about whether I win or lose, it's the enjoyment of getting there that I love. Some games I'll go into with an "okay, whatever happens you stick it out" frame of mind, and then I'll take a bad start surrounded by 5 other civs and run with it. Other times I'll feel like playing the isolationist, and then I want an island (NOT a huge continent so that I can win automatically, but an island with room for about 12 cities), but guess what? I can't specify that option in the map menu! I have to sit there like an idiot, starting and re-starting games until I finally get an island. I did this for 2 hours yesterday with still no result.

I find that some of my most enjoyable games have been when playing the isolationist. There's the time I was the Egyptians, on an island with only 10 (10!!!) cities and won the space race in the 1990's. And then there's the time I was the Zulu on an island with 12 cities and won a diplomatic victory. It's all about choice. Sure, the current set-up is fine, but why not at least put the option to specify your preferred starting location? Even with an option like that in, I would still only use it every now and then when I felt like it, players who don't want to use it wouldn't have to. Where's the harm in that?

And please, spare me the talk of "seperating the men from the boys". This is a game, not a strogman contest, so quit complimenting yourself on your courage and bravery in playing out a start.

Putting it in that perspective, may I suggest you try the Civ Placement tool? It can be found at http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11829&perpage=20&display=&pagenumber=1 . Ok, it is not a Firaxis provided option and you might have to spend some time working it out, but it should do the job.

The topic was challenge, I do not really see how one can be courageous and brave while looking at a computer screen at home moving a mouse and pushing keys.

I just want to go against the grain and give a shout out to the latest map I started on. Yes I have had those hours of trying to get a decent start, but this time, on archipelago medium water, I had a beauty. A Japan shaped island with only a little lake on it (but still possible to irrigate about 70%of the island from it, room for about 12 cities, shallow water to the collectivity of civs stuck on a bigger land mass with whom I caught up on tech by the 1700s. As I had silk only, and no coal, rubber, or oil, I was even forced to move beyond my island in seach of living space. Great map, great game. Sometimes they work out.

Exactly, Beammeuppy. I was being sarcastic.
