the "you are running an oppressive regime" comes from running the civics from the first screenshot (top half), because lincoln is one of the freedom-loving leaders. ;) and the "your society is flawed" comes from running slavery, because slavery is lincolns hated civic...

I just downloaded this, it looks sweeet. A

I noticed that i'm credited in the credits, and that some units are in the art folder, but where did you use them? I don't see anything in the game.

your units are used as barbarian units :D they replace the barbarian rifleman and infantry, and are also used in one of the new events.
 
Am I the only one experiencing outrageously high maintenance costs? Why did you make Despotism have a 100% DTP maintenance cost boost? Even with just 3 cities (and a ziggurat in two of them), my economy is crashing. Also, why did you move the jungle-chopping tech all the way back to Chemistry??? I'm stuck on a penninsula (and must REX my way out before HC traps me), and the only way out is into a jungle, where all the food is under the jungle?

Also, did you change the way maintenance is calculated? Even when i modded out despotism's effects, i still had high maintenance costs (even in a new game), as high as 3gpt even with a ziggurat. DTP w/o the Ziggurat would be 6gpt, and its a very close city.

i'm back.. obviously :D

i have been working on a new version. so far, i upgraded to the newest patch (3.19) and while i was at it, i based the new dll on the better bts ai mod.
i cleaned up the way opression/freedom was declared in the xml. now it is a seperate tag instead of a flavor.
then i changed the way "happy per military unit" works. now instead of giving a certain amount of happiness for every military unit, every military unit gives only 1 happiness and is capped at a specific value. this value is 5 for despotism and 3 for hereditary rule and police state. it works similar to the martial law from civ 2.
the last thing is, that your intellectuals will get angry if you are running an oppressive regime. in game terms that means, research modifiers you get from buildings will generate unhappiness depending on the modifier and the "oppressiveness" of your government. (up to 5 unhappiness if your are running the most opressive regime and have a 250% research modifier.)
those are the big changes up to now.
next, i am planning to make a kind of "ethnical cleansing" avaiable, where you can kill those parts of a cities population, that have the "wrong" culture. if i can get it to work, it will be through a button in the city interface. if can't figure out how to put a new button there i will propably use a unit similar to the inquisitor.
i am also planning to add titles for leaders. like the ones in civ 2, depending on your government civic and civilization. so you are called "emperor/emperess [name]" while running despotism or "dear leader [name]" if you are running police state and are korean... :D and by the way: does someone have by chance an idea for a general title under police state? "dictator" sounds more like roman despotism and besides, no modern dictator calls himself dictator.

when i am done with those two big things i will release the new version.

@mechaerik: i didn't touch the normal distance maintenance, only for colonies. also, despotism was supposed to be a bad government choice and i saw no other way to force the player and ai to go after monarchy... ;)

As for "ethnic cleansing", i suggest diverse bonus and malus :

Build a concentration camp which give +50 % production until there are not anymore non native civ player ethnie...

while processing, the concentration camp should give a great malus with civilization which have the ethnie you are cleaning...

Like : supposing you are german, and you are cleaning babylonian and carthaginian...
Your civilization of Germany could get extra happiness for homogeneity...

BUT : should give a big diplomatic malus - 5 : "You are cleaning our brothers" from babylonian and carthaginian...

ALSO should have have great impact on diplomacy since in our real world ethnic cleansing dont be forgotten easily...

....

OF COURSE concentration camp should be availlable only from industrial age, since the English have used them in India in XIX century age, the Nazi Germany has just systematized the method... If i can tell this thing "a method" :(

BE CAREFUL to well implement this without be behind flaming from peoples which doesnt like this concept, This concept is not bad for me as it just the History of Humanity, after all game is called Civilization, and now i understand the calling "DarkCiv" ;)

Make that as a no-easily useable solution to enforce civilization solidity...

You should study the different methods to avoid too big "melting pot" through History...

Bah, another mod I can't download because they use Failgamer. Gah, Fileplanet is better! By a thousand fold. Not to mention, I can download from any other server, then Atomic Gamer. Please update with another link, or I'll never be able to play it.

of course it is possible. it is done with the sdk. do you have experience with that? the sources are included in the download. you just have to search for "hatedcivic", all changes are also marked with my aka a1021. i think only the CvPlayerAI.cpp CvPlayerAI.h, CvInfos.cpp, CvInfos.h and CvGameTextMgr.cpp are needed for this change alone.
if you can't do it yourself, i may be able to do it for you, however i don't know when... maybe in the next few days or next week.

@DavidB1111: i tried uploading it to fileplanet, but it was going really slow. so i just used atomicgamer. i will try to upload the next version to both...
 
You could try Megaupload or Rapidshare, or even FileFront. I was just suggesting Fileplanet because I was tired of suggesting everything else. :)

Thanks! I have downloaded the 212 MB 7zip file. It does not seem to have the sdk source files included. I sorted the contents by filetype and there are no cpp or h files. Could you please let me know where the source files are? I will look through the changes and sort out the related ones; there is another guy who may be able to compile them for Dune Wars.

(EDIT: never mind, I found that you have included the sources as another 7z file inside the first one. I think I am all set, I will let you know if there are any further questions.)
 
i just wanted to say that i am still working on this. i was just so occupied with tweaking the ai, that i have not even started with the two big things i wanted to do. :D
but the ai now works exactly as i wanted it to. it respects the oppression value of civics but doesn't overrate it. i have already seen kim jong-il with universal suffrage in one game and washington with state property, so they are still able to choose the best civic if it is totally superior in their situation, even if it doesn't fit their oppression value. :D (i didn't want the to be total slaves to the ov.)
also the oppression value is now an integral part of the ai, not only for choosing civics, but also aggressiveness and some un votes. it even changes for some ais in the middle of a game.
i still have to figure out how to make new widgets and some rather complicated xml operations, but i think it won't take long now to the next version.
i will attach a screenshot of the somewhat changed civic-screen (it now shows oppression value), i think civics are the most important part of my mod (and i don't know what else to show, you can't make a screenshot of how the ai works ;) )

i have to apologize. i didn't realize this as that, but i really changed the way distance maintenance works. what i did was changing the handicaps (difficulties). i set most values in noble for 100%, to make it the "balanced" difficulty, but in the original game, noble only has 75% distance maintenance...

version 1.10 is now released!

first i want to say something, so that nobody gets a wrong impression: i don't support dictatorships or ethnic cleansings or anything of the kind. i only make this for a game, nothing more. in fact i am quite liberal in real life, i just like to play something different in civ. ;)
now that that is out of the way:

new changes and features in this version:

Spoiler :

- Despotism extra maintenance for distance from palace removed, upkeep is now high instead. It was also given an oppression flavor (it's a little higher than that of Hereditary Rule). That should make Despotism a new viable government choice, even though it is still the worst. In emergencies it can be used to more easily fight unhappiness. Most AIs will still try to avoid it if possible.
- Jungles now need Biology to be removed. To compensate, mines and plantations can now be build on top of a jungle without clearing it.
- The Oppression Value of Leaders and Civics is now an extra xml tag instead of a flavor. I overhauled some of the Opression Values while I was at it. Stalin and Hitler are now the two most Opressive Leaderheads, closely followed by Mao, Kim Jong-Il and Ghengis Khan.
- I upgraded to the new BTS 3.19 patch and used the Better BTS Ai 0.78 mod as a base for the new darkciv version.
- I changed the way "Happiness per military unit" worked. Now instead of getting a certain Happiness per military unit, you always get 1 Happiness per military unit capped at a civic dependant value. This is 5 for Despotism and 3 for Hereditary Rule and Police State. (Representation and Universal Suffrage can't use this obviously)
- Made some small changes for the Washington, Kim Jong-Il, Willem van Oranje and Hitler AIs.
- If you are running an oppressive regime, you may get unhappiness in cities that have many research buildings. (Intellectuals tend to not like such regimes)
- State Property provides +1 food for workshops, instead of +2 hammers.
- I turned down the volume of the new religion sounds even more.
- Modified the civic evaluation AI a little bit.
- Removed Taverns. Monasteries now allow for 1 Spy Specialist each, until they go obsolete.
- Christian and Islamic Monasteries now provide 10% research bonus, down from 20%.
- Intelligence Agencies now allow 3 Spy Specialists instead of 2.
- Added a new Tech: Aristocracy. Requires Code of Laws or Feudalism and unlocks the Representation Civic. I did this, so you can have ancient greek style governments in the classical age and to have a not-so-oppressive alternative to Hereditary Rule in the early game.
- New Leader Trait: Secretive. Gives a Bonus to espionage and faster Monasteries/Intelligence Agencies. Kim Jong-Il has this Trait now instead of Protective.
- Tactical Nukes and ICBMs are a little more expensive.
- Nuclear Plants are now less likely to meltdown but only have a +10% hammer bonus. (and you need Uranium for that bonus now)
- Oppressive leaders now more often vote for "no" in free trade resolutions.
- Newly liberated colonies get some bonus units. (defenders, workers and explorers, depending on era)
- Oppression value is now displayed in the civics screen.
- Darius I's Hated Civic is now Vassalage.
- The Oppression Value of some leaders changes when key techs are discovered. Currently those are Liberalism and Mass Media and they lower the Oppression Value by 2 for every Leader that has 5 or less (Liberalism) or 7 or less (Mass Media) as their current Oppression Value. This was made to simulate how nations have become a little bit more liberal with time and by technological progress. Technological backwards nations or those with especially ruthless leaders however didn't have this change, those are the "rogue states". (Hitler, Stalin and the likes will never become less oppressive) It also takes care of the "historical perspective" when looking on despots of past times. This doesn't however change anything with the favorite and hated civics, so some leaders will still only rarely or even never choose Universal Suffrage, Free Religion et al.
- I updated the PerfectWorld2darkciv mapscript to the latest version of PerfectWorld2.03. It's a really great mapscript. Try it! :)
- Added some more diplomacy texts for Kim Jong-Il based on some of his quotes and speeches.
- Statue of Liberty can now only be build in coastal cities.
- AI leaders who have a high (at least 4 or 5) current oppression value will be a little more aggressive. (remember that this also means some leaders will become less aggressive with liberalism.)
- Unfortunately I had to reduce the unit upgrade costs for AIs starting with noble. Otherwise the AI would fight with longbowman in the future era and put their research to 10% all the time for money to upgrade.
- Leader Cult is now available with Communism instead of Mass Media and instead of giving specialists extra espionage points, it will increase the chances for "We Love The King"-days.
- Christianity and Islam are identical to the other religions again. There wasn't that much of a difference anyway and I think the religion civics define the real differences enough.
- Favorite Religions now spread a little bit faster. Just to make things a little more interesting if someone else has the holy city, especially with Christianity and Islam.
- Free Speech now gives +100% culture and +50% Great People Points in all cities, as well as +100% War Unhappiness. I made this change, because I already removed one civic and changed one Wonder that gave GPP bonuses in the original game.
- Leaders now get titles, depending on their government and civilization. Just like in Civ 2. :)
- Made some experimental religion choice AI changes. AIs should now value a religion more on favorite religion, spread rate and total worldwide spread basis.
- It is now possible to "cleanse" enemy culture from a city. There is a new "Ethnic Cleansing" button in the city screen, above the culture display. You need at least 30% own culture in the city and must not be running representation or universal suffrage. The button instantly gives the city and the surrounding 8 plots (if you control them) 100% of your culture and block enemy culture in these plots for a few turns. (after that it can slowly "bleed" in again however) Beware that this has serious diplomatic repercussions and that you will lose the population that is removed. (i.e. if there is 25% foreign culture, the city will lose 25% population and so on) Only the most oppressive AI leaders will use this feature regulary.

Is there a valid reason why everyone who makes a mod makes Emancapation the only way to buy with money? I'm getting tired of that. :)

Anyhow, I'll give this a whirl. Provided it isn't on Atomic Gamer.
 
I'm really new to the mod aspect of this game , and i was wondering if you can play online with this mod?
