DDD IV: Joao

Such a turn of event. o_O

Ragnar's got my back:

Imagine how I felt.

I have zero knowledge of nuclear warfare and AI decisions on that aspect, but does it mean Ragnar starting using his own nuclear heads are the starting point of Zara allowing himself to retaliate without remorse?

@Tachywaxon

I was mostly referring to the -39 diplo modifier. Zara started using nukes of his own accord. He was the only civ with Fission at the time of attack, and since my war weariness sky-rocketed during the war, I wasn't able to raise my science slider either.

Ragnar's biggest contribution, in fact, was to vote 'no' to the UN motion banning nuclear weapons. He did this on all three occasions that I proposed it, just as I was getting pummeled. Moron. :(

@The Oz-Man

Next round coming shortly. ;)

That's a in-game mechanics I am getting interested now as the strategic aftermath of a good understanding is big. I can imagine the prospects...

I've seen some instances of diplo voting/AI pondering in the code...:)

Just like acquiring a Defensive Pact allows the human master to abuse resource demands by his vassal, maybe there's a mean to distort AI diplo decision upon circumstance...

Round 6

Well, after Zara initiated plan Nuclear Winter™ against me, I needed to hang on to my gains on his continent. Offense is the best form of defense, so I swung my troops round to attack more of the Native American cities:

Mesa Verde was a great city in terms of slowing Zara down. I had 12 City Raider II / III Tanks loaded up on Transports in Mound City. Even when attacking from across the sea, they received 90%+ odds up until Robotics (= Mech Infantry). Aside from having his ground forces whittled away, Zara would occasionally move four Bombers into the city as well. Then I would capture it, move my Transport into the city, load the Tank up, and ferry it back for him to recapture. Building four new Bombers meant four fewer Tanks. Building four new Infantry meant, well, four dead Infantry.

I had no means of moving new troops to the continent in except through the air. A city without an Airport can only receive one unit per turn, and when SB peace vassaled I only had three cities. So I needed to take more to allow me to ferry in more troops:

After taking out the Native Americans, I made peace for ten turns:

Zara was one tech away from a full Spaceship, and I wanted to make sure that I could wipe out his capital after he'd launched. My Transports were on the wrong side of the world, and needed to circumvent the globe.

Twelve turns later I redeclared and launched an ICBM of my own:

Now, normally I don't build Nukes to use against the AI. They're fine in a pinch, but I think it's a liiitttle bit cheesy to launch a mass nuclear attack in a single turn, unless you really have to. (This is a personal thing. It's not a hard and fast rule. :D)

But you see my enormous stack of troops that took Aksum? On the next turn, BOOM. :nuke: Three nukes, gone. My homeland too, BOOM. My capital, Heroic Epic city, Globe Theater spot all targeted:

Look at how the citizenry suffer:

The former Globe Theater spot. With no bread or circuses, the people began to realize just how incompetent their cruel, cruel overlord really is.

So, long story short, this entire turn made me sufficiently angry to drop all my principles and start using Tactical Nukes instead of Bombers:

I conventionally post a picture of my capital at this point, to show how awesome it became. Well here it is:

Moral of the story? Ragnar's a nut job... but Zara? Don't mess with Zara.

Thanks everyone for reading, playing, and commenting!

Would taking all the cities on your own continent plus some of SBs not have given you enough land for conquest?

Zara was set to win via Space on the turn after I declared:

I guess that I didn't need to make the temporary peace, but it seemed easier to do that and then backstab rather than plough through three cities worth of Modern Armors/Mech Infantry before finally reaching his capital.

You made this one into a thriller!
:D

Most interesting stuff to read in a while!
Congrats on a win.

Grashopa showed it works but the efficiency seems very low.
War success mechanics don't rely on how far you crush the opponent, but basically the losses even though the opponent is nigh crushed.

Yep, we had lots of happy so the whips weren't too bad but when you lose >9 chariots per city you don't get a good tech from peace. HAs don't have the same problem, but of course I didn't plan to attack and just saw the potential opportunity with a 2 archer per city Ragnar vs my 6 whippable cities. I should play it out to see I guess.

Hahah OMG!

Played this a bit and Imho the way to go is HA rush. (commerce+forrests+nasty neighbour who owns a holy city)

However, I didn't feel like warring much and got pwned by Ragnar in the BC's despite me running his religion asap. :gripe: That'll teach me... :(
