Deity Challenge 4

yeah, it was a tough spot though with some pretty aggro neighbours IIRC. I so much prefer edge starts when going for domination, though I suppose taking out Nappy first then wheeling around would have been ok.

I gave this a few attempts...unsuccessfully. I settled my capital a few hexes northeast of the starting location in favor of a riverside hill tile. France, as apparently is the case for most who've attempted this, was always the one to DoW me. My first attempt was pretty solid really...I survived his rushes but by turn 120 I was constantly on the defensive and was never able to establish a 2nd city or make any sort of push to leave my own capital...

The rest of my attempts were pretty much more of the same. I was actually able to keep France from DoW me, but it wasn't long before Russia did, so it was neither here nor there. That is definitely a tough situation with super aggressive AI Civs nearby. I think playing as Askia made it more difficult than it would have been with other Civs.

Plenty of horses and luxuries around though...seemed like a good area for tiles...although there was no iron anywhere nearby that I saw.

Did anyone ever complete this challenge?

No one has posted a cultural victory yet. Puyo posted a diplo victory, but that is it. No one has posted a "cheese" cultural victory (by domination and holding off on the last capitol takeover), which is probably the only option on this map, assuming you can even get past the early aggression from France, Russia and Japan. In my best attempt I was able to outlast France's relentless attacks and Cathy's simultaneous weaker attacks, only to be backstabbed and steamrolled by Oda.

Play GOTM 19(current game) under Game of the month section. Cultural deity attempt...and you must win it on the first try!

I'll check it out tonight! I'm getting quite a bit better at deity, so I finally feel that I can participate in these "deity challenges" without feeling like a scrub, good times!!

do I get Candys if I play (win) this?

It's the time for you to do a LP showcase my friend.

Let's push this game to the limit. I'm pretty sure that some players want to see you play after all these posts about what is good and what is bad. Here's your chance to put proofs on the table.

I will give you 40$ by PayPal if you can win this without a single reload.

How is it possible to know whether a game has been reloaded? Even if it's played through in one shot, you can't know whether that was the only attempt.

Though I agree, tommynt should definitely make some LPs.

well looks like i need pirate fraps ... - apart that if i fraps with comments I think it will be more multiplayer stuff. I dont think people like my style of playing singleplayer.

Oh well and seems like i need help with fraps - the 30 sec thing was allready 700 mb - WTH

I wish I d have frapsed some of my latest multiplayer games. Some really very good games with lot of back and forth and very good play on both sides. I truly think people MIGHT get attracted to mp after watching top players play.

The other problem is that there is already a lot of information available on this map in this thread. However, several of us (myself included) were not successful even after multiple attempts, so prior knowledge of the map would not necessarily mean an automatic win, but it certainly would increase the chances of victory. There is also a large luck factor on this map depending on what happens with your neighbors, although I suppose that this luck factor could be less important with superior play.

Why would you think that ? Do you have some extra special cheese recipes ?

Fraps - all video capture softwares save UNCOMPRESSED video - if you record on a high resolution you will need ridiculous amounts of storage space even for short videos ... Fortunately HDDs are cheap (1TB HDD should hold for a few hours of even very high resolution)... After you record the RAW video you need to use other software to encode the video and in the process reduce its size significantly ...It is this compressed videos you can then upload to youtube...

You got that right ...Even uncommented footage would not go un-apreciated...

I don't know what you mean, but I'm intrigued as well as annoyed by your comment that you seek 'perfection' in your games. I'd be interested to see your thought process in-game.

I actually just process videos as I go. I have 180 GB of free space, enough for maybe 75-90 minutes of video. So I process them one at a time in Windows Live Movie Maker and then delete the fraps files.

perfection is impossible, at least in execution, but playing the "overall picture" "perfect" is what every gamer shoult TRY imo, well at least that the fun in playing games for me.

In civ the problem with perfection is that it is very timecomsuming, one d have to manage cities at least every turn before and after growth, one d have to check contacts about every 2nd turn rechecking map positions, remember every unit and so on.
And then the luck factor plays a HUGE part, loosing wonders being maybe n1 "luck" problem, but even more the sometimes very randomly seeming dows (my playstyle tries avoid that a bit) and obviously fight outcomes (like units dying vs odds).

Overal I still think WINNING (maybe with worse turn times then looking for) every game should be relative easy no matter the start conditions, there are enough ways to abuse ai weakneses and dumbness.
And even in mulitplayer adjusting to bad land and still winning vs some1 good with better land is possible

I think deity-level single-player is a fair bit harder in this respect, since AIs start very far ahead of you and you have to be more conservative early-game to stay alive.

Playing conservatively early game might mean losing momentum (since benefits from conquest tend to snowball) and could lead to a much later finish if you miss out on the window of opportunity for longswords and you have to wait for cannons or artillery to invade your first AI.

I think 'perfection' involves a trade-off between somewhat riskier, but more optimal if successful, early-game strategies, and conservative ones.

well, its more that most optimal solutions are relative rather than absolute, except in a couple of very large 'big-picture' cases

i think to play 'perfectly' you should always be playing aggressively which means sometimes turning early non-optimal plays made out of necessity into later more considered moves.

No way to check reloading. Though setting a 24-48 hour deadline may come close?
