Ever since they fixed that rush build bug (40 shields for the first pop instead of 20) it seems to be near impossible to do anything at all on Deity. Before you could generally rush build a granary and then start cranking out settlers. Now, the computer will often have 3-4 towns before you can even get your first settler out.

Yeah, in other words you actually have to play the game and not pop-rush your way to victory! :) The game is much harder now than in the original versions; 1.21f is so much different than 1.07 that it plays like a different game. If you're coming back to the game for the first time in a few months, expect a lot of changes. But I think almost everyone agrees that those changes are for the better.

My first deity win was after the 1.21 patch. Not sure if that says anything. I did do a lot of games, trials and error, cuss words and throwing the keyboard, screaming at my two roomates while they were all looking at me weird.

It's all hard.

diety is too hard?...am i hearing you people right?..its the hardest level...its SUPPOSED to be hard aint it?

Deity too hard; that's probably the most unjustified complaint I've ever seen on this forum....

Well deity *is* incredibly hard now if the AI has room to expand, especially since the useless unprovoked aggression got worse.... But i do fine when there's not too much land!

I have trouble winning on regent level if I disable space race victory. Wonder how far I would get on deity?

And yes, the game is harder after the pop-rush bug was fixed, not only on deity.

So then, has anyone beaten it on Deity yet, starting the game after installing the 1.21 patch? Without going to war it seems like you will be able to settle at most 4 cities before the computer takes the rest of the land. Honestly, abusing pop-rush was about the only thing you could do to balance the playing field in the original Deity game. Without that, you're looking at the computer getting 3-4 towns before you have your first settler, even if you get a decent starting location (river + wheat/animal resource)

several poeple (tho im not one of them yet :( ) have beaten deity...last months Game Of The Month was on deity level and many people bet it...for a good read through of how one was done...scroll up a few people in this thread and read Sulla's description on his page (the link is in his signature)
(shameless plugs for other people??...i must be crazy  )
As for it being a good starting position.....er..hell no springs to mind!

DarkSchneider:

The easiest way to win deity is the 'Tiny-Immortal-Rush'. A game with tiny Pangaea map, 16 civ, you as Persia. If you can get iron, you can wipe out every other civ within a few turns, since at that map size every civ has 2 to 3 cities at most. Give it a shot!

If you want, I can post a save from 4000 BC where you have iron later on so you can give it a shot!
