I switched to Democracy during war and every town revolted... what is the best gov't when you're attacking other civs? Facism? What good is democracy?

Democracy sucks. It comes ways too late.

My favourite is Republic. You get the same gold bonus as Democracy, and your WW levels are very low. The *best* government in terms of WW are Despotism, Monarchy, Communism, and Fascism. None of those have the gold bonus, though.

You swiched to democracy during war? Why?
Go to one of those no-WW govts before war, and back to Demo/Rep after it.

Agreed, it sucks.

drunk, no offense, but you couldn't do a worst move :(
you always collect war weariness, only it's ineffective with some govt (say monarchy). But if you switch to demo and have still some ww due to past (or present) wars, you suddenly feel all of them... and it's not pleasant

But monarchy is better (ok, i know Tomoyo, we'll always be on opposite sides on that matter)

Democracy is good for building. It has the lowest corruption and a worker bonus. It doesnt come too latge if you go right for it. Granted, its not the best for fighting continuous war. But it's best for everything else.

No offence tR1cKy, but I think playing with one civ and one strategy gets boring.
I'd agree with Tomoyo in favor of Republic. Actually I like Democracy too, in peaceful games. Because of the lower corruption.

I guess I should research the gov'ts before switching... I lost a lot of turns and units doing that mid-war.

Is fascism better than communism? I don't really care for peaces, too boring. I'm a conquerer.

Here's a good article on Fascism vs. Communism.

I like communisim while war because the lack of ahh whats it called? i forgot

but still its the best for wars. Democracy is probably the worst gov next to despotism unless your going for the cultural or victory points.

OR the spaceship OR the diplo. That's four out of six ways to win.

Well... histographic counts as a loss for me... and it isn't that good for diplo or space because you will take until the end of the modern age to make up the gold that you lost in the anarchy from Republic. For culture, I don't think you get culture in Anarchy, and Democracy uses cash rush. Cash rush sucks for 100K, and for 20K, the game is decided (or rather, the date) way before Democracy becomes available.

It is a fundemental flaw in the game that a conquest victory can be achieved much earlier than any other form of victory. It is only natural to pursue this form of victory, unfortunately it gets tedious and repeditive quickly.

And btw: FoPo means foreign policy.

*thats from lockesdonkey's signature*

FOPO does not mean foreign policy its stands for forest park! the town i live in!!! me and my friends always call eachother fopomofos
sorry this was a little [offtopic] but i just had to correct him

Iv engaged war in democracy before and its ok as long as the other civ doesnt come across your borders. If they do, half your cities will riot. Iv learned the hard way. The unit support for democracy isnt that great either. Facism is the best choice for a war.

Sadly, I rerely find it worthwhile to switch out of the 2 AA governments (Republic/Monarchy.) Republic works well for my 20k/100k/SS/Diplo games, and possibly for Comquest/Domination too. Monarchy does a great job for Conquest/Domination wins. For democracy, the benefits (and they aren't much) just don't outweigh the extra anarchy period you have to go through. They really need to make the later governments *significantly* better for there to be any incentive to switch.

The last two games I played, i found it easier to get to Monarchy for a faster food bonus. Then, I later made the switch to democracy. This may make more sense than switching out of republic. Of course I was religious too, so that helped. But I still like democracy if only for the faster workers. BTW, cant you re-coup some of that anarchy loss by selling democracy to the rest of the world since it's an optional tech - the same as printing press?

There's an article about fighting under a republic government (could relate to democracy, too). If the AI attacks you first, you get reverse war wariness. Also, staying in the AI's territory too long, and losing a lot of units will kick the war-wariness into high gear.

No problem. :D

I prefer monarchy because it allows me to be in a continuous state of war without suffering war weariness penalties. One of my favourite strategies is to keep a war alive in order to cripple a republican enemy with ww points... in republic i couldn't do that.

Anyway, i have nothing against a player who prefer republic. ;) It's much a matter of preferite playstyle, i guess...
