Hi All

I've noticed running the latest BtS patch that I'm getting quite a few desert rivers (i.e. not flood plains). As if the map scripts weren't already obsessed with dropping me in Saharan wastes!

Is this just bad luck on my part, or is anyone else getting this?

It might be your bad luck. The new patch has produced similar terrain from before, although I am noticing more mountain ranges....and yet I am not playing teutonics

Desert rivers are normally only produced by a quirk of the map generator where it adds in a river to improve a civ's starting location. If these added river run through desert it doesn't at the floodplain overlay as it normally would. Therefore you only see desert/river tiles on rivers with a civ's starting location adjacent to them.

I don't think there's been anything changed that would make them more common in the 3.17 patch.

I feel your pain about desert rivers. How on earth could a river run through an area and have nothing grow! But, alas I've seen these cursed things in games ever since the original vanilla version of the CIV IV.

Part of the code that checks out how good starting locations are makes sure that you start next to fresh water. If a river is added to give you fresh water there is a bug that if it runs through the desert outside of the starting location BFC then the desert tiles are not upgraded. This was fixed in Bhruic's patch, and it is also now in Solver's patch for 3.17.

Sounds like it's the quirk you all mention. These rivers have tended to be running through my capital's BFC. Hey ho.

I'm guessing you're only noticing this now because you were using Bhruic's patch before, which fixed this bug.

does the new Bhruic's patch fix this for the newest official 3.17 patch as well?

No, Bhruic's patch was designed for 3.13 and shouldn't be used for 3.17. Using his patch essentially means you are still playing version 3.13, so you won't get most of the fixes/changes introduced with the newest patch. If you want the fix for this issue for 3.17, get Solvers new unofficial patch.

I'm only using official patches, and had seen this *very* occasionally before. I guess I'm just noticing now because the luck of the draw has given me a few of these barren riverbanks in succession.

Both official v3.13 and v3.17 have the same problem... this is NOT new. Many rivers are created "after the fact" of map generation if a civ needs a fresh water source and starts in or near a desert. By default, flood plains are created during the "normal" map creation, but not during the "oops, I need a river" afterthought that occurs in both the v3.13 and v3.17 official patches.

Bhruic fixed this "river afterthought" in v3.13, but he has not made a v3.17 fix.

Solver has fixed this "river afterthought" problem in v3.17... his patch is readily available.

There's really no reason at all to stick to the "official" patches, because they always have problems with them... Bhruic and Solver both made superior patches for BtS.

You've obviously never been through the Suez Canal. Or the American Southwest. And even so, the river usually isn't enough to justify an entire tile's-worth of extra-fertile land. And that's not even assuming it's a dry river.

Bhruic and Solver are only adding things to the patches made by Firaxis, generally fixes/tweaks that have been overlooked . If you compare the readmes of all of these, you'll notice that the ones made by Firaxis are far more comprehensive and incude many more things than any of the unofficial patches have added. So it's hardly accurate to say that Bhruic and Solver make superior patches.

I'm pretty sure that all he meant was that it is better to play with the unofficial patches than without them. I don't think he meant that Firaxis suck or anything like that.

Perhaps, but that's not what he wrote.
