[Development] Larger Map Phase I

Please make your suggestions in the threads linked in the opening post. There are further instructions on how your suggestions should be formatted.
Ok, it may take time to do reorganize...

Thanks!

Merged a pull request by merijn_v1: fixes for landmarks

Now it is.

New update:
- added Steppe, Semidesert and Moorland terrains
- added Taiga feature

I did not put any of these new terrains into the map, they're only there if someone wants to make a suggestion including them. I'm currently not sure about their inclusion, so it depends on what possible suggestions look like.

I found some useful images.

Taiga would be very useful to prevent mega-cities in Canada, Scandinavia and Siberia.

To discriminate between semidesert (orange) and steppes (yellow). They could give some bonuses for mounted units (e.g. Keshiks, Mounted Brave, Grenadier Cavalry...) and rebalance some (un)productive or (un)fertile areas in the transition between desert and plains.

In Eurasia, steppes vs desert

Most of the taiga is currently useless tundra ingame, so it's quite unlikely that introducing it would be much of a nerf.
Yeah, I'm assuming Taiga will be marginally better than tundra so its introduction would actually just improve a lot of areas. Though there is a lot of area in game Western Canada that is grass/plains covered by that Taiga map. Perhaps though the grasslands in the area of say Edmonton are an attempt to balance against the surrounding tundra and having taiga instead of both would bring a better balance overall. That said the taiga map above really does cover a lot of current grasslands/plains in Southern Canada, Northwestern Russia, the Urals, etc. So that could have a significant effect.

Have taiga, semi-desert, steppe modifiers been decided?

Also unrelated, does anyone know if I update the map git will the map I was working on in the previous version work still?

It will still work.

These stats are not final but currently it is:
- Steppe and Semidesert: +1 production, +1 food next to river, no commerce for being next to rivers
- Taiga: -1 food +1 production

The idea is to have Taiga removable only with an industrial or later tech. Note that with these stats, Grassland + Taiga is equivalent to Tundra + Forest (except you can remove the Forest) and there is no difference between Tundra + Taiga and Tundra + Forest.

I have removed public access for the map branch. Please contact me if you need access to it.

I would like to make suggestions if I could be any help, could you allow me access to the map branch? My github username is "mechu1205".

I was going to say the same thing, a nice antidote to having the AI explore vast areas of useless empty land, as well as cutting off access to East Asia via Europe (alongside deserts/barbarians).

Also this has certainly been asked before (haven't been here in a long time), but I don't know right thread, what new civilisations are being planned for Europe/The Middle-East which the larger map size?

Any room for Ancient/Modern Israel, Hungary, Sumeria, Babylon/Assyria split, Elam? I always liked playing puzzle civs, personally.

There have been no new civilisations confirmed for the new map, but the new space will be used to include new civilisations.

I'm not sure if there's a more recently updated version of the Big Map, but here's a 'New Map Overview' that Leoreth posted back in Dec. 2019 that has lots and lots of screenshots covering pretty much the entire globe. Definitely worth checking out.
