[Development Thread]WW1 Mod: Blood and Iron

Japan?????

Do you plan to make two nations? - Russia and Soviet Union. (in case of different scenarios) or just changes of countries would be made in Python?

That can be handled through existing code to setup a colony. Just have Russia setup USSR as a colony (handled through python).

If you want to get fancier, you can target what splits off (see Road to War Spanish Civil War and Vichy France events). With a small function replacement you can define what cities/units go to who.

You can also force them at war too if you want. Though I don't know why you would, not like they were enemies or anything. ;)

Hey smitty great to have you back, I´ve got some more updates for you soon ;)

I want to get started on the maps ASAP so will we want like RtW several maps or just one. And if multiple maps which areas of the world should they be in.

I would say Europe only. Similar to the RtW maps with North Africa, Eastern US and Russia to the Urals.

No point having any other place in the world as any skirmish was minor and over fairly quickly (ie: German Guinea).

BTW Smitty, how will you represent the ANZAC's?

I did not even know there were ANZACs fighting in World War One... makes sense though. :) Britain would hardly turn down any manpower.

That was were they got their fame, Gallipoli and all.

Cool thoughts guys -

On maps: So far the planned maps for the first release (probably some form of beta) will be a Europe map (including all major players) an Eastern European map and a Western Europe map. The next version update will likely include a Balkans map (going east to the Caucasus mountains), and a Middleeastern map. I can't really think of any other maps that would be needed. Beyond that are plans for an in-depth map/scenario depicting the Russian revolution and the Polish-Soviet war.

The only area on the maps I'm not sure about is the US - I'm hoping there's some way of scripting the map so that US convoys will appear different spots in the Atlantic then make their way to France. Let's put it this way - I'll do whatever it takes NOT to have the eastern coast of the US on the map. I want the US's entry into the war dictated by the player's actions (do you sink the RMS Lusitania, send the Zimmerman telegram, etc). I don't want there to be the temptation to invade the US and grab their cities early.

On foreign troops: For troops from parts of the map that aren't represented (like the ANZACs for the British or French north African troops) they'll be special units that will appear for those players at given times. I would prefer if they would be linked to the players' success at sea (showing availability of convoys making it through), but who knows...

On updates: Most of the work I've done lately has been XML (adding in units, working through some tech tree updates, etc).

However, I have finished a lot of new skins, including new Albatros DIII skins for Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire, US skins for the Handley Page O/100 and D.H.4 (which is also done). Not to mention a ton of buttons and other miscellanious art. Because of the unit-trading feature, I need skins for multiple countries (some of them what-if) for nearly all aircraft - luckily I've gotten to the point where it only takes me about 30 mins to addapt an old skin to a new paint job.

Add that in with all of the units seZereth has been pumping out and the mod is starting to look REALLY good. I've also re-done my old Liberty Ship into a good looking WW1 era transport - it looks even better being sunk by the completed U-31 U-Boat Germany now fields. The research on several new ships is also done, so I'm going to start work on some British destroyers, German torpedo boats, and Austrian-Hungarian dreadnoughts.

All in all, the mod is moving along faster than I ever imagined. If we can get some work done on the code, I don't think it would be far-fetched to expect something playable by April or May.

That's a dirty trick... just release the Albatros with the original German skin and call it Austrian! Like any of us can tell the differance between a German Maltese Cross and an Austrian Maltese Cross!

(On a serious note... I'm sure there's some differance that you're doing Snafu, and hope to see it released seperately... but really, I was disappointed the Austrian air force seemed to be marked almost identically to the German air force).

I´ve got a whole bunch of more units done ;)
so, can you perhaps create an internal alpha version, which already has the file structure (like folders and dummy files for the certain civs and units), so I simply can put what I´ve finished and see how it fits in game with everything else?

I´ll upload as soon as I have time to do some screenshots and stuff ;) (right now I am on a chemistry conference until saturday ;) )

I'm really excited seZ ;) Can't wait!

You could use my charlemagne map for concentration on the French-German front.

Sounds like a plan to me - I have some more XML work to do before the file structure is 100% in place, but I'm really close - once I'm done I'll make something available.

Maybe I should ask Woodelf this, but do you folks think it would help to have a more specific development section with a specific thread for different parts of the game? It seems to me things are starting to get lost in this big thread.

well, thats always a good idea if the mod is big enough to keep an active subforum (otherwise it might be demotivating to see a subforum without posts ;))
So, ask woodelf. I personally think, that the mod is going to rock and is in need of a subforum ;)
