[Development Thread]WW1 Mod: Blood and Iron

I found this on my HD from about 18 months ago. It could be further worked on for an oil rig I think.

Spoiler :

@Dutchking:
I definitely want to find a spot for you on the team... for a start, do you want to make some improvements or units?

This is what we need right now:
1. Older style oil rig (wood or metal, it doesn't matter):
Spoiler :
LodiTexasPoloniaOilRig1920Kolodzinsk05.jpg

2. WW1 Airfield (dirt strip with tents at one end - NO aircraft visible though)
3. New fort graphics (something like the French Fort de Douaumont at Verdun would be cool)
4. Recon balloons for all civs
5. Any of the many different types of trucks used during the war - Ford model T, Latil TAR French Truck, AEC 'YB' Type Lorrie, Austro-Daimler Artilleriezugwagen M.17, or any of the other support vehicles off this page at Landships.

Feel free to PM me and we can talk things out more - or message me on Yahoo at Snafusmitty.

In fact, what the heck, if anyone out there wants to help, or wants some input into the mod or to find out anything, feel free to contact me there. No guarantees I'll be able to chat for long, but I normally sign on when I work on units or stuff, just for fun.
*all added to list* :p
I'll start work on this when I get home later. :)

So, have to make it quick:
Here is the zip:

all units 100% my creation, all max 408 polys with rifles, all based on pics smitty sent me (despite the fact, that the next days will be a lot busier, i need more pics or other civs!!!!)

here are the pics of some battles, seeing all 6 troop types in action (early/late for france, germany, britain), the late units are those with steelhelmets ;)
early

late

Smitty, we need that BtS Oromo warrior animation, maybe for the early types, I gonna have a look what I can do to find an easy way, I think it looks pretty cool.
Perhaps we even find someone who can do us a crouched fire and a bajonette attack animation?? that would be bloody awesome ;)

Looks great man!

You know, I never really noticed the Oromo warrior - it'd make some pretty good animations for the infantry - which would be better though, to have those kfms for th early or late infantry? I think they would look good for the later myself, just because they're more hunched over...

Along with my asperations to animate some wicked artillery, I've been playing around with animating figure units - right now I can do a little, but hopefully in time I plan to make a gunner that fires from the prone (lying down) position, and kneeling, - adding in a cool bajonette attack would be cool too.

I'll send you some more pictures tonight - man you're cranking these babies out!

seZ,

there're 2 things I like very much about your units (beside the EXTREME GOOD QUALITY, that is)
- they all have kind of a seZerethish feel to them, that makes the unique
- they all blend well into standard Firaxis units!

Thanks, you're doing an awesome work, please continue!

I am really enjoying this.
I found an easy and reliable way to create the machinegunner, flamethrower, and stormtroopers, without reboning and stuff. so we can keep the performance really high, while depicting the epic scale of WW1.
I will give you some more teasers and perhaps some downloads, when I am done with the Austrian and Russian troops ;)

seZereth, those infantry units are awesome. :hatsoff:
Would you mind if I incorporated them in my mod? :please: They would be used to replace rifleman/grenadier graphics for when the Industrial era kicks in.

Wow Sez, those look amazing! Excellent job man, I love it!

Here are some pictures of the Albanian soldiers around that time (despite the different years, they didn't change much, still looked the same):

Albanian soldiers at Mass:
(That tall guy in the middle was 7'4"!!!)

Korvgubben was gracious enough to create the skins for the 15th century (earlier and later) Kalorse unit as the Albanian UU for my Albania mod. Here you can see the skins he used:

kalorsexk6.jpg

The first two are for the Keshik model, the last is for the Knight. Let me know if you need his original .dds skins.

The Albanians always wore their national dress that distinguished them from the rest of Europe, to the first half of the 20th century from the prehistory before it. Each region/clan/tribe had their own variation, so as far as military goes you never had everyone looking alike: instead of a force where everyone wore the same uniform, you instead had mountaineers wearing their normal everyday clothes and going to battle. To accurately depict this you need to have "mixed regiments" (one unit with a few different "models") ... the good thing about this is that the only thing really involved is a skin change, for the most part.

As you can see above korvgubben used 3 "models" for the unit. The first two were the same model just with a different skin. My recommendation is using the "pants" on the far right, with the 2 different colors provided in the first 2 instances. This may require a model change, or a rebone or whatever you call it, but you'll notice there are 2 types of headwear: the qeleshe, or white skull cap, and the "head wrap." It would be cool to have both depicted.

As far as the weapon, the Albanian gryk hollë was a rifle with a very long barrel, with no bayonet attached. Foreign travelers into the mountains of Albania remarked that the mountaineers, with their long-barreled rifles, could shoot down planes. Considering that marksmanship was the chief past time in Albania, the long barrel gave the rifles extra accuracy, and planes at the turn of the 20th century not only flew low but were made of light metal and easily shot down, it's no wonder this was the case.

I`ll do some albany units, but I think I will do some mixed ones without a late/early differentiation, but a differentiation in the standard regiment to show their skirmish like style. I like those..
Austria is done and Russia almost ;) I`ll release the them tomorrow probably.

"Mixed" units to represent the various Albanian tribesmen that partook in the battles is much better, since there was never a "military uniform" until the communists forcibly took power and enforced those standards on the whole country. In reality, there was no late/early differentiation ... as the Albanians wore their national dress since time immemorial.

Another thing: at their "belts" (not really belts) Albanians would carry their pistols. You can see it in the first and third pictures, but here's a statue of an Albanian hero from Kosova that better depicts what I'm talking about:

The third picture again gives a great idea of how long the rifles were (very long barrels!), but just in case you were wondering I have a picture of my grandfather's WW2 rifle:

They called these "Martini" rifles.

If you have any questions or need more pictures for reference, let me know. I'm very eager to see how they turn out!

sorry ;) girls come first :D had not the time to sort everything into a releaseable package. But in general Russia and Austria are done (albany is next). So,... probably expect them tomorrow. have to sleep now ;)

cheers.

Sorry Woodelf- I looked in vain a couple days ago for some good WW1 era pictures for the city sets. Hopefully someone else might have some better luck. For now, forus on cities as a whole - Can we even have cities that get damaged without any special code?

You want code to change the Civ's ArtStyle (which controls which cityset is loaded)?

Done. Let me know when you want it. It's controllable via python, just send it the integer index value of the artstyle (as defined in GlobalTypes.xml). :)

So in other words, cities that turn to rubble during combat is a reality now thanks to this code and calling it from python during combat. :)

Dale

Edit: Hmm...... I can easily set it to change a Civ's cityset, but getting one city's cityset to change is a different matter. I'm still working on it though. :)

Did you sleep well? ;) You know, I don't wanna rush you and stuff... :D

In regards to the above, whilst it isn't currently possible to dynamically change a city's graphic set in-game (but you can change an entire Civ's city's graphic set in-game), I have the feeling this will be possible soon. ;)

So I'll let you know when it can be done. :)

sorry for another delay, but it's worth the wait.
You will get a full set of WW1 Infantry, Machinegunners, Grenadiers, Flamethrower and Stormtroopers for all the Nations I have already done (Germany, France, AustriaHungary, Russia, Britain).
Hopefully I have some time today to finish it, but unfortunately I am not sure about that :\
