[Development Thread]WW1 Mod: Blood and Iron

What about add AIR General, NAVAL General, to common land General ?

Air Marshal, and Admiral, working the same as common General, but for AIR & NAVAL Units.

Could add promo to units, could be leader of one, add access to special promo.

WW1 is a world war, and there's a great lack of non-european nations Units, but they still participte to the war :

- Japanese early dreadnough, japanese early fighter, & japanese imperial troops,

- chinese republican troops, (at war with Germany)

- colonial troops (asian, african, hindu, north african)

- foreign troops (canadian, australian, n.zeland troops)

- and Italian WW1 units, like a biplane.

And maybe Bolshevik troops, early infantry, machinegun, early armored car, biplane.

Whilst it was a global conflict, unlike WW2 all major battles were centred in/around Europe. Other than the Western Front, Eastern Front and Gallipoli, the only theatre I'd think would be worth considering to include would be Arabia (though I think it may even be easier to skip this too as I think it'd be hard to get the AI (or at least the British) to grasp that it should be very much secondary to the goings on in Europe)

If the Asian and (South/East) African theatres were to be included, then it would naturally make the map so small as to be the real detrement of the European theatre.

Whilst it would be nice to see unique units for them, I'm not sure that Commonwealth troops really need to differentiated from British troops - at most they should have different art and maybe different stats and perhaps be spawned intermitently* rather than built directly, but they should definitely be under the direct control of the British player to avoid AI quirks of defending locations unlikely to be troubled by the German player.

* perhaps the rate could be partly limited by the number of German U-boats/U-boat Tech (wolf-paks?) in operation in the Atlantic, to give the German player a reason to keep U-boats out in the Ocean rather than fighting the British Grand Fleet?

Unfortunately, the Arabian and Middle East Campaigns were some of the most interesting stories of the war. The fall of Jerusalem, the march up the rivers. I cannot imagine a Great War scenario without it, it was quite a major part, and its side effects are still felt today. (The British taking dominion over the Middle East was big, the Ottomans had held it for the longest time.)

I like football wich you call in usa soccer :)

Is this going anywhere?
When will the mod be done?

Blood and Iron is still very much alive - it's just taking some time. Look for the alpha to release for testing around February some time.

Let me know if you need some more urgent help on the infantry, i can suspend some FfH stuff, just because I want to see a released version of Blood and Iron so badly :)

Thanks - there are a couple units that could help out, but the infantry units aren't holding the game back. Right now the only countries not represented well are Belgium and the Ottoman Empire. French and British colonial troops are also needed.

The biggest things holding B&I back are the scenarios (which are going slow) and the SDI work. I might have found some willing volunteers to help out with the SDK - so now I just need some time to work on the scenarios.

Is it going to be like Road to War, like the historical events, random historical events and open play. For example if on historical events you could have the Russian Civil war in 1917, bringing them out of the war against Germany. I can make an WWI events list if you want.

Yes and no. The alpha will not include any specific events - there's no enough time to include them. However, I'd like the mod to eventually include them. My goal is to have an event represent each major battle of the war - if you achieve the given objective you'll receive a bonus, whereas if you fail to within a given time frame you lose (these will apply to both sides - offensive and defensive).

If you want to compile a list of general events, that would help a lot. Some people have already suggested a few - the Russian Civil war being one of them. It'll definitely be included in the mod. So much so that I'm planning a scenario to focus specifically on the formation of the Soviet Union using B&I as a starting point. It'll include the civil war of 1917 through the Poland-Soviet war.

Will the Mod include the whole of Africa?

Will the Mod include the whole of Africa?

Nope. Right now the alpha will include a Europe 1914 scenario that only includes North Africa and the Middle East as well as the whole of Europe. Separate scenarios will follow for the Western Front, Eastern Front, Middle-East and Russian Civil War.

I was reading back posts (to get caught up) and saw Kissa's suggestions for Naval and Air great generals - anyone know of any mods comps for this? I think it would be awesome to include unique air aces as a form of great general for a great air general. I ended up making a bunch of pilot-specific aircraft paint schemes that could easily be used as artwork. Hmm... just a thought.

I've never tried it with non land units - but I've got a sneaky suspiscion it would work with boats, but the "Great Commanders" in FFH2 can be added (and later removed) to specific units and add a point of attack and defence strength, and give a bonus to XP gain.

So, if you want to include peripheral campaigns but have Europe be central, emphasize Europe somehow. Maybe a victory type in which your team has to gain control of Capitols. Unfortunately, you can't just make a building or bonus a prereq for a project, so having a capitol control count "spaceship" victory won't work. Though I guess somebody could add tags for such a thing. Using a building that makes the victory project feasible by just increasing an outrageously costly "spaceship" construction like 10000 percent would pass over the head of the AI.

I read the first and last pages, but on the first pages there was some concern about trenches. Why not just make them isomorphic and X shaped so they fit together? I guess the idea is that they will be built by stationary units adjacent to each other, so such a plan would exclude a graphical representation of nomansland, since friendly and enemy trenches would join.

I made initial list of events in WWI:

Many countries were disorganised and unprepared for war as some troops lacked weapons, ran out of ammunition quickly, and because of poor supply lines, desperately needed food. Even Germany, one of the most powerful countries during WWI totally ran out of artillery shells in just 6 weeks of fighting! Also countries couldn't constantly expand its army because of its population (but you can on Civ IV!), so many countries introduced conscription (forcing men of military age to join) so perhaps you could resrtict the amount of units you can make, depending on the cities population, I have the sizes of each countries army when war was declared if it would help, and I also have the amount of men of military age in each country. Also as well a production you could include military training, e.g. the stronger a military unit is, the more turns it takes to make
If you could somehow incorporate supply lines, production of ammunition and weapons it would make it so much more realisitc.
I also have the amount of artillery pieces, machine guns and type of guns used by each country if that would help.
