DH03-Empire of Blood and Iron

[0] 1625 AD I pillage a windmill with the swordsmen. Move pike and mace to cottage tile near Warwick.

[1] 1630 AD
Novgorod has very little hammers and no courthouse, so courthouse it is. MM it to make hammers. English musket dies attacking Moscow. English catapult retreats towards Cantebury. Attack knight with pike in St Pete and win. Move knight to cover him. English musket kills mace. Sword weakens English knight near Yaroslavl, suicide catapult dies but weakens it severely. Longbowman kills it without a scratch. Pike pillage cottages. Move two remaining swords towards catapult. Move workers to reconnect horses. Move longbow and pike to horse tile near Moscow. Moving caravel to Rostov to bottle up possible English navy. Vicky is nearly landlocked and has only fishing villages on the northern coast.

[2] 1635 AD
St Pete cat suicides on last trespassing musket, and longbow dies attacking it. Second longbow kills the musket and our lands are free of the English swine. Pike finishes off cottage. Sword pillages farm, and moves towards windmill near Cantebury. English catapults retreat. Yaroslavl is starving, so workers rebuild the farm pillaged by the English terrorists. Vicky has redcoats and that is not good news. Why on earth are we not researching Mil Tradition? Switch to MT.

[3] 1640 AD Muskets finish. A quiet turn for the war.

[4] 1645 AD Redcoat kills our sword near Cantebury. Sword pillages windmill near Cantebury. Galley pillages English crab boat. Vicky was annoyed, now she is furious. I think (but have no way of knowing) that Louis is beginning to give her trouble. Horses are hooked up, and are well protected. Knights to complete in one turn in St Pete, Yaketerinburg, and Moscow in 3. Whip courthouse in Novgorod.

[5] 1650 AD
Our last sword gallantly defeats a musket, and nearly kills a longbow in defending his right to pillage English property. English knight suicides on garrisoned Rostov longbow. Long live Mother Russia! Mao wants us to stop trading with FDR. He is now annoyed. Vicky's artwork changes, so she is in the industrial age.

[6] 1655 AD
A great scientist is born in Zhou, send him to Yaro to build an academy. Two redcoats kill both the Yaro knights defending a rebuilt farm. Vicky is now focused on Yaro. I suppose she is tired of wearing just grey.

[7] 1660 AD
Moscow starts a knight that will be a cossack. Long live Mother Russia! In two turns cossacks will be building in three cities. Once more however, English swine are in our lands. Retreat the pillagers near Oxford. Nothing to be done with the redcoats near Yaro until the cossacks arrive. Starting on rifling, then chemistry for grenadiers and frigates. Zhou is unhappy, i break out the whip and cossack due in one. In Civ3, cossacks were one of the best units a human player could have. We will see how that bears out in Civ4.

[8] 1665 AD Zhou finishes its cossack, who kills the English knight threatening towns near Zhou. Long Live Mother Russia!

[9] 1670 AD St Pete completes its 'duct, and starts on guess what. Cossack garrisons in Yaro on its last turn of move. So fast! Trade MT for Constitution, WM, and 10 gold from FDR. Trade MT for 540 gold from Louis, hoping he can inflict more damage to Vicky. Trying to deny Vicky trading opportunities, i also sell GK banking for 210 gold, weedy, but he is now pleased.

[10]1675 AD
The Yaro redcoats do not move, so i will wait for more of our fearless cossacks to reinforce our position near Yaro before ridding our lands of them. As they are built, consider promoting them to combat 1, so they can get pinch when they get a win. I dont know if it within the variant rules, but we could revolt to theocracy and get pinch when they are built. The diplomatic, economic, and variant implications kept me from doing so. Now that we are making cossacks, expect Soren to have Louis make peace with Vicky, so she can flood us with redcoats.

Continued to crank out Cossacks like mad, with a few Caravels on the side (Victoria's fleets eradicated our naval power.)

We currently have no English units in our territory. We have two razing squads in her territory, with a third on the way. her roads to our territory have been razed, along with many farms & cottages.

Built the Heroic Epic in Moscow (finally). Hello, 2-turn Cossacks!

Researching Astronomy next. I know it'll obsolete our Colossus, but we need better ships & the Observatory bonus.

After seeing Victoria capture a city (that isn't ours), I noticed Mao Zedong is at war with Victoria as well. Mao wanted to give us Marble for our Iron; I accepted, since it'll make things harder for Victoria.

Victoria will now speak to us, but she demands one of our cities for peace. Pillage her lands until she learns better; between us & Mao, she can't last long.

Switched to Representation & Free Market, which will increase our commerce & research rate. It shouldn't hurt our Happiness rate.

Recommended next research:
Steam Power -> Assembly Line (factories, infantry & pre-req to Fascism)
Or, if you feel lucky, Scientific Method -> Physics for a Great Scientist.

Wow! Sure is a lot of wars going on. Mao is at war with both Roosevelt and Victoria. Victoria is at war with Mao and us. Genghis and Fredrick are duking it out. Jeez, this must be the dark times of our world.

At one point we do manage to take one of England’s sources of Iron. Before it can be pillaged our units are destroyed.

We need to end this war. I believe that due to following the variant rules this war will be hard to end. Since we can’t take any cities its hard to force Vicky to accept peace. The unhappiness from the war is really starting to take its toll.

I chose going the Steam Power route as we need to focus on getting to our desired civics.

I didn't play my full turns. I think I played six.

Here’s the 1760 AD save.

Roster:
DeceasedHorse- MIA
Tamalane- On Deck
Mike Lemmer
Methos- Just Played
Corbeau- Up

I lied. I played my full ten turns. There's not a whole lot going on, mostly building. Some highlights:

1) Theatres are going up around the nation to combat war weariness.

2) The budget for culture is at 20%, for the same reason.

3) Most of our eastern sea resources have been pillaged by Vicky's Combat IV Frigate, and need to be hooked up again.

4) We have a navy now, which has sunk multiple English frigates (including the Combat IV pillager) and is now in English waters hoping for some payback on civillian targets.

5) We have raiders in the south of English territory, and are taking out targets of opportunity (just nailed a pasture, but I don't know if they'll get wacked now).

6) We have a stack of 4 Cossacks screened by a Grenadier in Vicky's territory to the north, which is intended to pillage everything it comes across (no particular target in mind, just screw up as much of Vicky's land as possible).

7) Research is on Assembly Line, which is necessary for Facism and provides two huge plusses: Infantry and Factories (we do have coal by the way - 2 sources well inside our territory that already have mines on them).

8) The French are now at war with the English. I bribed them with Steam Power (expensive, but no one was willing to offer us anything for it). I don't know if they'll have any real effect, since they're way out there on the west end of the continent, but I'm hoping that it'll effect Vicky's willingness to continue fighting us. She's stubborn; her price has now dropped from Yaroslavl' to Rostov (um... 'fraid not Vicky).

We have so far been perfectly able to stomp the few units that Vicky has sent to pillage. Cossacks simply own Cavalry.

The Save:

Hmm, well, i think in a few more turns, her price will become more reasonable. At any rate, that was my experience in one of my early Civ4 noble games where i had a protracted war with Togu, and was unable to take a city from him (too well defended, on a hill, and with insufficient units on my part).

I presume i am up? DH appears to be still MIA.

@Talamane: Yeah, she's yours. It appears that DH has dropped out of his own game.

Edit: Whoops, looks like I've been mispelling your name Talamane. My apologies. It's corrected now.

OK, got it. Play/post tomorrow nite.

Actually, it was supposed to be Tamerlane, but i screwed up when i joined CF. I wonder if Thunderfall could fix this? Since then, i have claimed to be Tamerlane's ugly brother. :mischief:

Vicky's sending Cavalry? Funny, I was getting hosed by Redcoats last turn.

Vicky may be building up a wave of redcoats, but she didn't send any into our territory in my turn. That's why I started some Grenadier builds. Grenadiers will still lose, but Vicky is less willing to attack them than Cossacks.

We'll have infantry with Assembly Line though, which actually outclass Redcoats. That should help.

It took 25 seconds to load this edit box. It will probably take another 50 seconds to post it.

R/L has reared its ugly head. If you are willing to be patient and wait another day, i can get this done tomorrow nite.

Several people have complained about the site being slow, but this is the worst i have ever seen it. I tried two different machines, vastly different in configuration, with the same results. Pings and traces look fine.

Thanks for your patience, folks.

[0] 1804 AD Our people are unhappy. Too bad.

[1] 1806 AD We sign OB with Mao. He wanted Steam Power, but i talked him out of it. A little pillaging near Warwick never hurts. St Pete starts a theatre.

[2] 1808 AD We pillage Vicky's fishing with the frigate at the cost of one. I dont know if 5 gold was worth it, but if it makes her cities as unhealthy as our large ones are getting, i suppose it's worth it. Moscow starts a jail.

[3] 1810 AD An English cavalryman makes the mistake of getting near one of our highly upgraded cossacks. Scratch one English vermin.

[4] 1812 AD Trying to fix Moscow's unhappiness, i make a temple. Scratch another English cavalryman.

[5] 1814 AD
Start another frigate in Novgorod. Yaro starts a barracks. More pillaging, a Nottingham cat tries his hand on our pillager stack. I bottle up the units in Nottingham with the remaining frigate by bombarding its defenses.

[6] 1816 AD Vicky offer peace for steam power. Ah, more reasonable than a city, eh? FDR is upsetting our people with emancipation in addition to the WW.

[7] 1818 AD Vicky sends no units into our territory. We continue to devolve her improvements.

[8] 1820 AD FDR cancels the corn deal, wants a fortune to renew it, and our cities have turned to green sewers. Several cities start infantry. None of them are unhappy, so the sickness limits growth, which would create happiness problems. It's good, sorta. Start research on sci method, to get to communism and biology.

[9] 1822 AD Our pillagers move onto Nottingham's silver mines. English cavs takes out our longbow, cossack avenges. Scratch one English silver mine. Cantebury is now down to pop 7.

[10] 1824 AD Our pillagers move onto another of Nottingham's silver mines. Our suicide pillagers (one gren, one cossack) are pillaging farms between Cantebury and London. Amazingly, they are still alive. Sci method in two. We are unhealthy, but not unhappy. A workboat has been started in moscow to bring in the fish. We may be able to trade fish for corn from FDR once the other fishing tile near Yaro is boated. Long Live Mother Russia!
