Hi there, all you amazingly gifted, experienced and hardcore CIV fans!! I've been playing the series since the first Civ, so I'm very familiar with strategies, tactics and all of that. But on this forum, abbreviations FLY around like a swarm of mosquitoes! From reading posts for a week, I've been able to decode UU, UA, OP and DoW... But the rest?!?
Is someone outthere kind enough to give us new guys a dictionary for this, in all terms, great forum?

DoF: Declaration of Friendship
CTP: Call-to-Power, a modpack
BMF: Building Made Fun, a modpack
ICS: Infinate City Sprawl, a grid-like arrangement of cities spreading far & wide

Rammy: Either Ramkamhaeng (Siam leader) or Rameses II

Told my mom about people on the forums calling Ramkhamhaeng "Rammy" the other day, she got a bit upset. Most Thais consider it disrespectful. It's pronounced "Ram" (A pronounced as in arm) "Kam" (it actually sounds like "come" when speaking quickly) "Hang" (sorta, the tone changes a lot here, probably would be ridiculously hard for a foreigner to pronounce that properly), so that would be ram-kam-hang, for people who don't know.

Anyway.....
Just two more major abbreviations that I can think of:

He only says it in the intro, but so do another bunch of leaders. (Kamehameha, Wu Zetian, Suleiman, Napoleon, Augustus, etc.)

Correction:

CTP - Call to Power 1 & 2, two games that tried to revolutionize the civ series with some new interesting ideas, awful implementation in the beginning, still under development by a skilled modder after Activision freed (sp?) the code. The mod (CTP mod) tries to recreate those ideas in civ5.

The term is a pun on the OP nature of the wonder. That is, in order to win on a map that features El Dorado, only one skill is really required: finding it first and early.

It's an emote. Similar to : ) is a smiley face.

means they're sticking their tongue out, usually as a gag. : O means they're shocked, >: ( means angry, : ( means sad, :| means not amused, 8) is sunglasses, etc...

Really? Personally I take no offense nor feel it respectful. At least Civ player know Ramkhamhaeng. Does anyone ever hear "Askia of Songhai before Civ5 out?

Neither do I, some teachers at school felt a bit annoyed at it. I suppose it's mostly the older generation...

Just remind her that these are the same sorts of people who abbreviate Montezuma as Monty, Montgomery as Monty, and Monk as Monky.

That's even worse than El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula

And I'll bet, just like the above, you never, ever use the full name when referring to it. It's just human nature to abbreviate things, especially when they're from a foreign language.

I forgot about that! , she'll have forgotten about it either way, it was a pretty short conversation.
I've never seen anyone call a monk monky though....

You're right, we just call it Krung Thep. The official name would be Krung Thep Mahanakhon.
