As is well documented, GameSpy got bought by another company and is now ending multiplayer support for a lot of older games. Just curious if that affects Civ 4 as well.

It seemed to be working a couple days ago, but I don't know if it will stay up for long

lots of other games literally just stopped working

should find some alternatives. gameranger?

from 2K... "Unfortunately we don't have much information on how Gamespy is handling their multiplayer servers. The servers are not in our control, so we don't get a whole lot of heads up about them shutting down or not. I'd suggest contacting gamespy/ign for further questions on that."

that doesn't sound hopeful

they still think Gamespy is owned by IGN :(

I love how companies bundle crapware with their product, and then wash their hands of it. Not that 2K is the only company guilty of this, but it's no excuse. How many great old games will lose large portion of their functionality due to this? How many of these games had work around programmed into them in case gamespy were to die? Probably none.

civ4 multiplayer gets shut down and that's all you guys have to say about it?? 3 posters with 4 posts? Whats this world coming to....

I just re installed civ on new laptop and gamespy wont work.I just get directed to a page which says the companys finished. So unless a new company is going to take over the server I guess civ4 multiplayer IS over for me.

Gamespy is a terrible service. Mplayer was much better back in the day. Damn gamespy. Damn them to hell for buying out Mplayer

I played a game on multiplayer about two or three days ago, it seemed there were a plethora of other games available on the server. Anyone have more info on this??

So for someone entirely unversed in the world of Civ4 MP, can someone explain to me what this means for people wishing to play a Civ4 MP game? What was the role of GameSpy? Are you still able to play a Civ4 game if you have some friends to play it with, and does this just mean there's no lobby to find random people in?

Direct IP and PBEM games should still work entirely fine. It will most likely mean that we won't have the lobby to discover games.

That is exactly what this means. No lobby, no games list etc. This is why I've setup a steam chat group for Civ4 and Civ3 as per the other thread I started. So that MP players will have a place to gather to setup direct IP games. PBEM games are pretty easy to setup in forums of course.

from shacknews (+I abridged this) :
"2k games has announced that civ3 and 4 and their respective expansions will survive the gamespy shutdown and transfer to steamworks"
so yes its doomed for people using disks, but no for those who got it through steam.
And there are alternatives

2K will give you a steam key if you an provide them with a picture of your original disks. So life is not over yet. And 2K/Steam have even allowed us to install a "beta" version that is the original game complete with directIP.
