[GS] Did you enjoy the leak?

Would you rather know the Civs/leaders in advance through leak?

No the leak ruined the pre release fun and games on this forum. What was the fun guessing threads for this expansion? "Which of the 7 civs we already know will be revealed on next week's livestream?" Those threads were a bore.

I miss the threads where people would figure out a civs inclusion based off of some small detail from a screenshot. Indepth analysis of screenshots just wasn't as interesting this time around. Or the time when the early leader images were found in the background of an office picture. That thread was probably the most interesting/fun thread ever on this forum. The amount of debate and analysis that the blurry leader images brought was great

I've been looking forward to seeing Pheonicia since I was introduced to the series (Civ3 basegame). Having some person just put them on a concise leak list lessened the impact of their official reveal for me.

Agreed. I had a ton of fun reading the speculation for Rise and Fall civs where we'd get the visual clues on Twitter. Some people figuring out that those brass knuckle things could be connected to Georgia, and then everyone realizes that we're about to get Tamar of Georgia.

Which goes back to your point: guessing the official day-before-first-look hints for Gathering Storm would've been way more interesting if we weren't just determining which of 6 civs the screenshot was representing. Judging by the fact that we still had a tough time determining precisely which civ it was (Mali, Ottomans, or Phoenicia!?!?), I think it would've been very difficult to say with any certainty what the civ was going to be. But it would've been fun, because we'd have no idea and every single piece of speculation would be worth considering. And the next day we'd find out what it was and we'd either be saying "Wow I was right!" or "Dang I knew it was Mali!" or "wow it was something completely different that none of us even thought of, huh!". Instead, we'd just be saying "oh yea ok" and just waiting to see what the civ's uniques were, without any of the hype over the fact that this civilization/nation is officially in the game.

I would have preferred being surprised actually, but somehow this time around it didn't bother me as much. I think the conversations and discussions went somewhere else instead of focusing on who and why.

On one hand I disliked how it removed surprise

On another, I somehow simultaneously liked how it immediately killed neverending spam of 50 threads WHAT CIVS WILL APPEAR/SHOULD APPEAR BASING ON REMAINING 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 SLOTS

I think next time Firaxis should do partially obscured leak, so we are not sure what civs will happen but can attempt to guess them

I said I didn't like the leak, but I am not sure whether it was because of the leaks or because I really hated the crop of new leaders.

1. I hate Hungary's deal with leveraging the military of City States. It is so specific and so weak.
2. Canada is OK, but boring and weak.
3. Sweden, and Eleanor (Alternate reality historicity of them aside), Maori and Mali seem really OP, and difficult to balance. They are going to be nightmares to play against at higher difficulties if they get into a good map spot.
4. Phoenicia seems really weak. The bias against naval civs (apart from the English) seems to continue.

I disagree. It makes Hungary potentially the strongest civ in the expansion, and one of the strongest in the whole civ vi roaster. Watch Marbozir play Hungary. Or tune into the live stream that is running just now between Ed and Carl...

I would have preferred there to be no leak so that each new Civ was a surprise. I actively avoided the leak but it was impossible not to know which Civ was likely to come next. Though the leaker said there could be a 3rd expansion, I enjoyed that.

I think the leak was good for everyone involved and if Firaxis hadn't planned it they should have. Leak culture creates far more hype and interest than straight advertising. Certainly the way it leaked, with images of the three of the four most controversial leaders, I think lends credibility to the idea that Firaxis wanted to give fans more time to get used to these new ideas.

As for me personally, I appreciate having more time to digest and understand the theme of each expack. Had this happened with R&F I probably wouldn't have been so critical of the reveals. And I probably wouldn't have bought R&F yet if I didn't have the full picture of GS reassuring me that the devs are putting a lot of thought into the bigger picture.

So I support this particular leak. I actually prefer knowing beforehand that the civs are well chosen instead of the frenzied arguments over why X staple needs to be in the game. And the fun for me really is in speculating at the mechanics and being wowed by the art design.

You are focusing on winning a conquest victory and very specific situations. I like playing large maps against the AI. Any protracted war is an absolute recipe for disaster. A limited war for one or two cities so you can expand into an area is good, but leveraging city states is not going to consistently bail you out militarily, other than in multi-player duels.

All it is going to do is mean an instant restart if you are next to them on an open map, like all the OP early game military Civs. They will be awesome at dragging you down, but trying to win a domination victory on a huge or large map at emperor level is nigh on impossible, and while leveraging City states is great at the start of a game, by the end it is pathetic.

No, it‘s not specific. It seems to be of incredible help in the classical age, the only time the Deity AI is a threat. So like Nubia, Hungary will always feel one or two difficulty levels lower than the average civ. Also, it is not nigh impossible to win a domination victory on large maps.

The first leak was clearly someone trying to stir the pot.

I'm not really sure how I feel about it. I'd hope it's not someone internal.

This reminds me a bit of an experience I had with a game called Rise of Legends. I was in a league for the previous game in the series (very fond memories of that time in my life), Rise of Nations, and got invited into a beta program for Rise of Legends, as well as part of a sort of "inner circle" when patches got released after the official release.

I shared some patch notes with a friend, and he later released them. I hadn't confined him to secrecy or anything, but I was a bit surprised about that. It wasn't a major patch or anything. I'd imagine something similar could've happened in this situation.

On one hand it reduced any complaints about why X not Y, but on the other it did also affect their marketing strategy. I was definitely impressed with how stream hints were given though and with the marketing.

It is if you don't play Pangea.

Yes, I appreciated the leak for two reasons. The first is that I don't like surprises. The second is that by the team the actual reveals came around I'd made peace with some of the choices I was less fond of and absences I was disappointed in.

I don’t agree with your assessment. Watching the streams, they all look pretty darn strong if you are willing to change your playstyle to match the niches they fill.

Potentially weak if you have a set playstyle you adhere to, but the beauty of the game is that it gives you 40 sum Civs to choose from so one of them does fit that style.

In general, I think all the new Civs seem stronger thematically and in ability - as a whole- than the Rise and Fall crop.

That being said, we will know more in a few days when it releases and we can try them out
