Yes, I know. Not quite as pretty as Aaglo's. But I figure, I'll just render this one bigger than his orc. Beat them into a pulp. How pretty would they be then, huh?

I will probably render him a little smaller in the final version... This one is with a frame size of 180x180. I am thinking 140x140 should be plenty big enough to kick sand on those orcs. Also, it will make it more useful to more folk, I suspect. I could always just have a poll on it and render it out at the prefered size.
I prefer slightly larger than stock previews because it helps me spot flaws. The most recent flaw I was sorting out was the attack. Where the spear tip wobbled a bit too much for my tastes and the upward angle created this weird illusion of the tip bending. For now, I am happy with the attack. I have not yet put together a run, fidget nor death anim. Once those are done, it is time to start rendering and making the sound files.

WHat do you have against Aaglo and Stormrage?! :joke:

ANyways, a few comments, I'd just leave the Frame size the same, but increase the zoom percent (makes the unit inside the frame smaller), since, as it is now, your Troll touches the edge of the frame in some of the animations, and that, IMO looks bad in-game, especially when half his spear disappears into thin air in the E and W driections of his attack animation... (I'm not 100% sure that will happen, but base on my own experience, and the size of your unit in the frame, I'm willing to bet money it will).

One small tip: in the Fortify animation, he moves one leg and then the other, but his torso doesn't budge. I did this myself in a recent unit and only realised afterwards that it looks a bit odd. When he moves his right leg back, his hip should also move back and to the side a bit; then, when he moves his left leg forwards, his hip should move forwards and to the other side a bit. The same for the Victory animation, in reverse. That way, he looks like he's actually putting his weight on his legs, rather than waving them beneath him like a jellyfish moving its tentacles.

Other than that, this thing looks fantastic!

I aggree 100% with what Plot is saying... I've found that it's generally best to know beforehand which leg you're going have remain in place, and base the rest of the movement around that for a more natural feel.... That, and it prevents embarassing feet sliding effects....

Thanks for the tip with the weight shift, I will keep it in mind. I originally had a little bit in there, but he looked a little like a big fat hoola-dancer so I took it out for now.
Yeah, the frame is pretty tight. Originally, I did not plan on having him so animated. But it is fun to make the little suckers come to life.
I just tested and I'm going to have to zoom out to keep him in frame.
Here is the scale I was talking about... Looks goofy large to me now when I compare it to ther units

I like it. :)
Lord of the Mods could use a big green troll.

The spear looks quite thin, do you think you could make it a bit thicker, or do you think it will be alright in the end?

Yeah, big guy has to have big weapon and this spear looks a bit toothpick-like in his big, crude hands :)
Beside this, i have to assent to this statement: Awesome! :goodjob:

Looking Great Bjorn and I must say you have some very good movement for him in the animations. More Life like and the Clarity and detail is superb. I agree that since you have done such a wonderful job on the animations that the weight shift would perfect him more. Your thoughts of rendering him 140 x 140 are Right On. Very Powerful and Mean Looking Unit indeed :goodjob:

oooh....I likey!
I can't wait to put this baddy in the Dragonia mod.

I do also agree that the spear sharft should have more girth. Keep him big, though, makes him look meaner and more manacing. Although having a small version as well as a large version would be nice too.

if it is a troll i think you should recolor him bluish-gray and also it would be cool if you made another one with a great big mace or somthing as a more offensive version.

I made him green as a nod towards Aaglo, the undispute king of all such creations. I intend to keep this version nice and green. Trolls were often green, according to stories I heard when I was a kid. Most statues of trolls I've seen are greenish with alot of brown in them (or flipflopped... brown with a just a hint of green)
I do plan to make other versions too. I had been planning that he was gonna use a big ugly smacker (club), but SOG's problems with spears prompted me to see if I could do it and if so maybe share how I did it.
I have made the spearshaft about as big as I can. To make it bigger I have to split the mesh and enlarge the components seperate (it is currently a single 3d object).
I intend to keep him large, but I think he is present too big. If the demand for such a large one persists, I may do a large one too.... just not looking forward to sitting there hours and hours rendering out a single unit. Also, it makes it less useable over all. It doesn't need to be the biggest unit in the game, it just needs to be big enough to smack an orc around
