Die-Trying Challenge

I'm no Viking history expert, but it seems to me that if you want to be the best barbarian, I'd suggest that you raze every city that you capture. Signing peace and giving back captured cities seems far too civilized for a game like this.

A few more thoughts:
-I think the difficulty could be higher, i think emperor. if we dont play for winning then let's make the ai more challenging
-It wasn't in your rules, but i'd dissallow building libraries (we are barbarians after all). Also no caste system so we could only have priest specialists and only if we are able to build temples
-I agree that we should get currency to be able to make cash in our cities
-I still say that after we get every technology we should move the slider 100% on spying instead of money because we would become too rich otherwise and looting from the other civs wouldnt mean too much.

loking at your start I'd say that either settling in place or on the plains hill where your scout is would be your best bets.

sounds like signing open borders with people will be ok unless you share a landmass with someone

Copied from RB atleast mention the source from where you 'stole' the idea

And where did RB copied his idea from? from the real vikings? nah... I've played similar games in civ3 too so it's not original at all, BUT: the thing is that the two game is very different so even if the op get the idea from there the only common thing is that both play with pillaging vikings. But the one at RB is quite a normal game and this one has very modified settings.. so please dont say stupid things..
(the op may not even know the RB site, i do)

Let me just re-iterate, Vikings were the last pagans in Europe. They did not convert until about 1000AD. This means NO Organized Religion!

I think the game should be role-played out as this pre-christian Viking culture. Or, alternately, staying pagan all game and possibly limiting some of the other civics.

EDIT: I would allow calendar and also Astronomy, but no ship upgrades beyond Galleys. Along with raiding, the Vikings were great explorers and also traders. I think most of the challenge can come from limiting the civics; HR (undecided on this one), barbarism, slavery, decentralization, and paganism.

The vikings were not barbarians, just heathens! They had a great reputation for pillaging those poorly defended monestaries with their shiny gold icons because they didn't believe in that christian mumbo jumbo. On the other hand, they had a great reputation as traders and colonizers: They ruled much of great britain (Dublin, York, etc.) and traded all the way down the Volga and Dneiper rivers through russia and ukrain all the way to the black sea. In fact, when things were going bad in those parts, the locals actually asked the vikings (who they called the 'Rus') to take control. Their trading rep is probably what gives Ragnar the financial trait.

So, in my opinion the viking way of life can include conquering cities. Should include an emphasis on overseas trade (allow the great lighthouse? Or just try to keep all your cities coastal). No organized religion. Use your spare gold to pay for military and expensive overseas possessions.

You could probably allow feudalism, even encourage it. Some sources say they founded Russia!

I just tried this map at lunch, but I had bad luck, slave revolt, health quest which I took right after I whipped something, a detour to archery, and a silly self imposed 50% research cap all led to a slow start. So, I started over and got SHOCK AXES right after I researched BW.

Lots going on in this discussion, things I like to see, so let me make some responses.

First off, I've never even heard of the RB site, this is something that I just thought would be fun. I had no delusions that this would be an original idea... I am sure hundreds of people have tried the same idea. I just haven't seen any on THIS site. The closest was MadScientist's game as the Mayans in the new world.

So for the rules. I will axe organized religion, meaning we will have to rely on luxury goods and soldiers to keep the towns in line, though this doesn't prevent spread of religion in our lands... after all, the Vikings weren't areligious, just pagan by Christian standards. I will also tentatively allow currency for the purpose of producing wealth. I hate making all these exceptions to the original rules laid out, so I'm wary of allowing feudalism and other techs for historical purposes when I'm not sure how entirely necessary they are for an entertaining RPC.

Regarding cities... we all know that Vikings were the bane of monasteries and coastal towns throughout Europe... their attacks on England and that they did also have their civilized side as the Varangian Rus and so on. I got the idea for returning cities after hearing about a Viking raid on Paris... the Vikings marched on Paris, where they were bribed to leave the city unharmed. So instead they destroyed everything in their path on their way back to their boats. Our goal is not to become an imperial power, it is to make a quick buck to keep our gods and barbarian soldiers happy!

I'm starting the first round of play now and will post it soon!

We begin this challenge deciding to take a chance by moving one west towards the other coastal area we can see and decide to settle - and find cattle to our west! Production begins on a work boat and we begin researching animal husbandry.

Exploration reveals a desolate, frozen wasteland that's not very hospitable... perhaps to those soft, fancy foreigners! Real Viking men feel quite at home! :D

After a few turns, Nidaros grows to size three and having researched Bronze working, we discover that we have one source of bronze - right under Nidaros!

The rowdy Vikings rebel in favor of institutionalized slavery using enemy prisoners of war, and research is set to sailing to find some beautiful women and slaves! Production was set to a settler while we wait on galleys to become availabe.

I need to take a break for now, but I will continue play later on. Feel free to post your advice!

First, for pictures, turn on resource bubbles, so we can see things better.

Next, I vote for berserker rampage. Don't worry about this "what should I do when I run out of techs and buildings, I'll have to build units." Build units. And go rampage. Even if it's just for fun, and you return all their cities right after you capture them.

Build a workboat before the settler and send it out to scout for beautiful women and slaves. That way you don't have to worry about sending your precious transport in the wrong direction.

Sorry for the lapse - I've been quite busy and have not had much time to play, and it appears it will remain that way for the near future. This update shall be short, but I promise the next will include some action.

Firstly, our research path was Sailing - Mysticism - Agriculture - Iron Working.

Our people long to explore! A small fishing boat is constructed in Nidaros, manned with a brave Viking crew, and sets sail to find beautiful, lusty women and cities for plunder. However, the first thing they find is a nice island that the Vikings one day hope to bring under their control:

Sailing northeasterly, we find a new land, and on it, a civilization of dark-skinned, warlike people that we are unaccustomed to.

Ragnar, despite his better judgment, cannot contain the bloodlust that has risen in his people's veins, and construction on a galley and training of Viking axemen raiders was undertaken... but not before our people createst their greatest work, a world wonder that somethings tells me shall be the only one they build!

The knowledge of the heavens it unlocks allows us to view our little corner of the world as a part of a whole - a whole world which is very big! There must be tons of lands with maidens of virtue true and wealth undreamt of! The Viking men clamor for action!

Ragnar heeds their call and an invasion force sets sail with our brave Viking raiders for the land of the dark-skinned warriors.

Unfortunately, Ragnar learns that there are others on his land! Barbarians even more depraved than we Vikings, bent on destroying everything we have built! I must close for now, but we Vikings will soon heed the call to pacify our own lands while bringing rich islands and unwitting weaklings under our rule! Victory for Odin!
