Difference between Hotseat and Internet MP

I just played my first MP game with a friend, us two playing a duel. When we went to war we realised that the combat was realtime, so whoever clicked attack first got the first attack, instead of cycling through each turn like a normal game. Why is it like this? If it's supposed to be like this, how could you possibly enjoy a Civ game that's a battle of speed clicking?

I've played hotseat MP before and that was on one local PC, and it cycled turns normally, is an online MP hotseat like this aswell?

The way it SHOULD be is, you all do things like pick techs n policies and production simultaneously, the take turns to move your units around. I can't enjoy it with realtime combat either, which is why I don't play MP.

There is no such thing as 'online hotseat'. Hotseat is per definition on one computer :)

But I agree there should be an option for MP games to have or have not simultaneous turns. I believe in Civ4 you could turn simultaneous turns off for people that didn't like the 'clickfest'.

What you can do is agree with each other who goes first, when fighting. Player 1 goes first, then player 2, etc.

ah right, fair enough. i thought there was an option to invite human player on hotseat.

yeah i think i'll need a lot of good communication to get that agreement thing going - would probably only work with friends

it sounds like to me that the Devs made it simultaneous turns to get rid of the constant waiting between several players just to take your turn, which i could see making an MP game very boring, but as a result sacrificed the combat mechanics in the game. some people would probably enjoy it but it definitely isn't for me

It's more than just simultaneous turns. Hotseat mode also currently has unit animations, AI leaderheads, and AI diplomacy all of which are missing from standard MP.

Those things are hardly necessary in multiplayer; I'd rather they not be added because it'd slow down the game too much.

That is because Hotseat is more SP code base than MP code. All other MP modes are simu turns, no animations or other SP stuff. That stuff just slows the game down, and most MP players don't want that. The game is about strategy not eye candy for most of us MP players.

AI diplomacy is not eye candy and is a game breaking issue for people who like to play mixed human and AI games.

Second, no one is asking for those to be made mandatory, only available as options. I doubt most MP players don't want them, more like most hardcore MP players don't want them. Tons of people play MP in a more casual environment and even like to play a game over days. The point is, the game shouldn't force you to play a certain way.

I and most other MP players are fine with them being options, but I think you would be surprised at the number of casual MP players that still play simu turns. I played many games with DanQ and his crew, formerly of Apolyton fame, and even though they prefer co-op games against the AI, they still play simu turns. Sequential turns is just to long. I understand about the MP AI, not sure why it is different than the SP AI, I though they changed/fixed that in the last large patch.

There was the option to have simultaneous turns on or off in Civ4 MP, but out of the many many MP games I played, I never saw a single one in the public lobby that had simultaneous turns off. Probably why the devs didn't bother to put it back into Civ5.
As far as I know I've never played a civ 4 MP game with simultaneous turned off.

But I can't remember people complaining about it in Civ 4 as much as with civ 5 ("oh no, they've turned it into an RTS!".
Why is that? Was unit moving different in Civ 4 MP than in Civ 5 MP or is it a direct result of the hightened tactical approach of Civ 5 with the one unit per tile?

It would just be nice to have the option for turning off simultaneous turns. i don't like long turns but I'm tolerant when playing with friends.

Simultaneous turns should stay.

Devs just have to make some mechanism that remembers your orders and than executes it regardless of ping.

+1. These things are a SERIOUS drain on play speed.

It vexed me greatly that people could play with combat animations on in civ IV in MP. I wouldn't have the slightest twinge of guilt killing every unit possible while they watched one battle. Their fault.

I remember myself saying : ''PUT YOUR ANIMATIONS OFF!!(noob...)''

The best solution would be simultaneous turns UNTIL two humans are at war, at which time it goes to sequential turns.

I'd like a toggle for animations so the whiners could see how awful they'd be and then never turn them on again.

hmm perhaps :)

Simultaneous turns would fundamentally change the game. I've never played mp. How long do people get to make their turns?

I understand about the MP AI, not sure why it is different than the SP AI, I though they changed/fixed that in the last large patch

The AI was improved in that patch so that they actually expand and build infrastructure but the patch did nothing with AI diplomacy so the AI never contacts anyone which completely breaks down the system with the lack of declaration of friendships/denouncements. Basically, what happens is that now for the first couple of turns the AI acts like normal but once you reach the point where you should have met the majority of players you notice the AI is basically just sitting there twiddling its thumbs. It won't even trade with you for luxury resources.

Also, I don't mind simultaneous turns, especially since I like to play co-op against the AI where that is less of an issue. I still would like the option for people who want it though.

Well, the solution to this would be to have it as a game option enabled by the host. That way its set before the game, everyone knows what they're getting into, and everyone's on equal footing.
