Digital photos far to big, any way to shrink them?

My parents take lots of photos with digital cameras.

They are swamping their PC with them

~3MB a time

~3000 x 2000 pixel.

Is there any program that will easily resize them so they are not ridiculusly huge?

(this program preferably should be parent proof!)

How about getting them a DVD burner? About 1500 such photos per disc without any quality loss should make photographing parents happy.

Big photos are good, you get better detail, which you'll want if you ever print them. Hard drives are very cheap, storage shouldn't be a problem. If you want smaller files, you can change the settings directly on the camera.

No, your not understanding.. its the physical size that is the main problem..

If my parents try and email them for example, the other person gets the picture and its HUGE!

They only have a few GB's of pictures.. its more the case of acually using them IRL.

Is there no program that will easily resize them to something more managable?

If they're resized you can't really print them anymore.

You can print any image file. Just print it as an image file and forget the software that comes with the camera. On windows XP, I don't even install the software that came with my cannon camera. There's nothing useful to me in the package.

I think he means that if you resize them to be small onscreen, they'll either print really small on paper, or look very poor.

But I'm sure you knew that already.

that all depends on how small you resize them to. my camera makes them about 2800 pixels on the long axis. if i resize them to the width of the screen, that's still 1000 pixels, which fills a piece of paper well enough. if i'm posting them online i'll leave them 1500 or 2000 pixels. if you want a printable size, pick a printable size.

This only gets you around 100 dpi which is a pretty low quality for photo's.

The limiting factor there is the printer, not the image file.
