Maybe the most important tip besides not refusing demands is missing (i think) :)
Watch frequently for possibilities to make them stop trading with each other.
Military Advisor & Site Rep for quick overview.

Long list of benefits:
They won't like each other (as much), can result in DoWs amongst them while you smile & watch.
Can result in a rather long time with no talk between them (= no trading)
When afraid of a DoW from further away leaders, who would have to walk thru other's territories, close their borders with each other..problem solved :)

Yeah I second this..... I'm constantly being real nice to the underdogs and backstabbing my chief rivals... if the game is too peaceful I´ll usually try and do something like bribing one of the highest scoring AIs to declare on another one...

Or in some cases I'm at war with an AI and I got what I wanted, I'll get another AI in on it, then make peace the next turn

A lot of times the AI will plot against you, then demand something, you give in, he'll attack anyway once the peace treaty is over.

So always refuse demands in those situations.

I won't get into too much detail, but I started a game last night with many of these diplo tips in mind. I (Ramses) founded most of the religions to corner the market, spread Hindu early to 4 civs, and only had to compete with two Buddhist civs. Now I have tons of cash, tech/military lead, vassalized Toku and Washington, Monte and Mao are my attack dogs, and a diplo/conquest win is well within reach.

I am amazed at how much control and flexibility good diplo gives you in the game. Overall these diplo tips will help my game with any leader. Thanks all!

On a normal map, diplo on a continent with 3 or 4 other civs is relatively straight forward compared to a Pangea with 6 rivals.

Signing initial open borders is always useful for early buffing of relations and scouting out the land, but OB with all soon becomes awkward once religions kick in and worst enemies take hold. Staying friends with everyone is not possible - you have to take sides or you end up with everyone hating you. When a 'stop trading' demand comes in its worth hitting F4 to see the latest in AI-AI relations. The BUG mod has a table which really helps to see what everyone thinks of each other.

Trouble is - worst enemies can change, so I find it necessary to constantly check to see if it is advisable to do a tech trade without getting a -4 from someone.

Trading Tech with worst enemy causes -diplo pts.
Trading Resource with worst enemy is ok.
What about trading maps with worst enemy?
