DirectX problems

- adaptrid = 0
- deviceid = 3
Error: Creation failed: Invalid 3D device type.

That's what my Civ4 says when I try to run it.
I've looked on the net, but it seems that most people with this problem posted 5 years ago. I also used to be able to play for three years, and this comes up all of a sudden.
The only thing I can remember having update is my Adobe Reader. My DirectX may have been updated, but I can't remember that for sure.
Can anyone help me?

Installed. Civ4 still doesn't work. Do I have to restart my computer?
EDIT: Would reinstalling civ help?

Thank you, kiwitt! I already tried to install that program two days ago, but then it wouldn't install. For some reason, now it did, and although I was still unable to start civ at first, restarting my computer removed the problem.
