Play on a system where the game is not installed on an SSD.
Set visual effects to Ultra. Enable all of the following options:
1. Game Options > Disable Planetfall Visual Effect
2. Game Options > Quick Selection Advance
3. Interface Options > Auto Unit Cycle
Now start game and play normally, but always have an unit end the turn by idling (pressing Space). Do not put this unit to sleep. Idling means that this unit will be automatically activated when the next turn begins, due to option #3 above.
Proceed to end turns until a new faction makes planetfall.
When this happens, the map will blur out, snap quickly to the location where planetfall is made, then try to snap quickly to the now activating unit.
Only then the arriving faction's leader shows up, so his background is our unit, not where he made planetfall. When the system is tied up even more, then the snap-back won't even make it all the way back to the unit, but stop in the middle of nowhere.
Suggestion: Only start the new turn after the interactions with newly arriving factions and stations have ended.
