Divine Intervention II

@TheForestAuro: There's a link in my sig to the BUG forum here. The basic premise is to give the player convenient access to information without offering any spoilers or changing gameplay. I am a sort of "freelance contributor" to it and find it tremendously useful. The Reminders feature I mentioned allows you to set a message that will pop up X turns later. So I was thinking a "god" could set a Reminder that pops up a turn or two afterward and thus you get an in-game message from the heavens when you play the next set.

For that to work both the god and the player would need BUG installed though.

Or just the player could have it. Set a reminder for X turns or whenever X is built/researched/founded. Player then stops playing, saves the game, and posts up save.

But for a God to set the reminder, and for the player to receive it, both posters need it I believe. Now, I may be wrong as I have no experience using BUG but that seems most logical for me. I know that if the God doesn't have it, he can't set a message though because when I shadow MadScientist stuff, I don't get all of the BUG mod benefits even though he does.

Eh BUG just takes five minutes to download and install (use the EXE, not the ZIP) so it's really not a problem.

I'm guessing this game is 3.17 though? That'd explain why I can't use it.

Probably. It worked for me, BUG mod and all. I have 3.17, unaltered.

Sorry for the delay folks - as an apology, an extra-pictury edition of Divine Intervention!

Spoiler :

Hannibal strapped his armor on, preparing for the inevitable war with Gilgamesh. He had slept - and awoken - and this was also an inevitable sign - that the gods had changed his world. There were more than he could rightfully keep track of now - Rolo, the original god that had gifted them with fertile ground so many millenia ago. Runner, the keeper of the City of Gold - a mythical place filled with nothing but gold. The scourge of Carthage, the Terror god of the Sea. Eldarion, god of beasts. Who next?

"Sir," said one of my advisors. "A messenger from Aschington has arrived! Mt. Runner, too! The ice has melted!"

In the many years that had passed, the two had performed very differently. Mt. Runner had barely survived before the coming of the Beast God, its most noteable accomplishment being worship of the Terror Sea God.

Relations with Zara are improving. He seems to almost enjoy seeing me now.

The divine message appears to have been found - we must said west, but through deep ocean waters. Our scientists are on the task.

We have built a temple to this New God, the God of Beasts - a great church in his honor, the "Hagia Sophia."

Meanwhile, Rolorunnerism is on the rise!

We have created a temple for the Runner himself.

With the advent of new, deep ocean boats we set two crews to sail - one to search for the fabled golden isle, and the other east, into the unknown. We do not immediately find the golden city, as our crew is set upon by Barbarian Seafarers, but after long deliberation, a new land is discovered! Its residents appear to be somewhat less cultured and technologically advanced than us, but one of the residents, a tribal leader by the name of Shaka, agrees to teach us secrets of their Calender.

Sumeria still looms to our south, and we must be vigilant in our efforts. However pleased he is with us, we must remember that he is our enemy.

In one fell swoop, War is declared, and our armies march south, aided by large lumbering elephantine creatures and borrowed Numidian Calvary. We reach Uruk quickly and the city falls after a long, hard siege.

Meanwhile, on the homefront, our priests have been focusing in on education.

The war rages, but we are winning. Our morale at home has been strengthed by something we have been waiting millenia for - at long last!

The Golden City of the Runner!

An interesting side note - Mao and I were the AP candidates by the time it all rolled around, and of course he won, but after I spread Confucionism to my no-longer-glacialy locked cities I had a massive vote majority

Enough to single-handedly vote down measures.

But who knows what trickery the gods have up their sleeves for Hannibal?

A breathless runner enters the castle bearing an urgent message for King Hannibal. Hannibal immediately goes into conference with his closest advisors.

"What news is this? Does it concern our war with Sumer?"

"No sire, it is from the Prophet Marzipan."

"Marzipan?!"

"Yes sire; he came from a family of bakers. We've found it best to simply smile politely and ignore the name."

"I see... so why does this Marzipan send us an urgent message in time of war?"

"Well, sir, this fellow is an acolyte of an obscure religious sect which follows the minor deity Dresden. He's supposedly allied with the Great Rolo but noone knows much about him. Apparently, Dresden has sent us a Quest."

"I am intrigued, continue."

"The prophet spoke to Not-So-Mighty Dresden during a trance. It is said that Dresden sent a bear into our world to test the morality of our people. While wandering along the silver-rich South-Western coast of our continent the bear was attacked by a barbarian hunting party and it barely survived. It is our Holy Task to find this bear, bring it back to Mount Runner, and nurse it back to health. If we do so by the year 1510, Dresden will smile upon us. But if we fail, Bad ThingsTM will happen."

Eldarion, god of beasts, nods with approval at Dresden's choice of ursine manifestation and of a holy quest to aid the injured creature.

"The Carthaginians have proven a loyal nation, fulfilling the will of the gods however they may, building great cities and wonders in our honor. But this test of compassion amid the struggles of war will weigh their hearts, proving without doubt that our people are beyond reproach."

One thing I might mention is that animals cannot enter cultural boundaries, IIRC.

Would you like me to just teleport it in with the World Builder once I get it back to my barriers? (bearriers? lololol)

I had considered that and thought of a way around it but there's apparently another restriction on animals which I was not aware of. They can't board a damned boat either. Just do your best to help the bear and the gods will react appropriately. Impossible quests are just part of the game when you're dealing with gods. :p

I've been lurking for a few days now, this is a really cool concept, I think I'm going to call a "Got it" and add a few things

The Mountain Diety, an ancient god of the Sumerians, long forgotten by his chosen people in their shameful worship of Rolorunnerism has seen a recent upsurge in offerings at his small overgrown temples. He returns to see what events have caused this change of heart and sees the nightmare that is occurring. The Sumerians are being routed by a superior enemy force waving banners of Rolorunnerism as they mercilessly conquer Sumerian lands.

The Diety sees atrocity after atrocity committed by the heathen forces, but refuses the pleas of the Sumerians, they had abandoned him after all. However, just before the Diety was planning to depart the world again and return to his rest, the ancient city of Uruk falls. As the Carthaginian forces enter the city an errant round from a catapult smashes into the temple erected in honor of The Mountain Diety near the center square of Uruk. Long neglected, the temple topples from the single round. The Mountain Diety is enraged, destruction of his legacy is even worse than neglect, this can not stand!

The Mountain Diety, weak from centuries of Rolorunnerism corrupting his land decides there is only one hope for saving his legacy. He enters into a mortal form and collects a small band of devout followers into a bodyguard. Using what is left of his power he raises mountains along the Carthaginian border hoping to hold off the tide of invasion, and with the best of his bodyguard approaches the city of Uruk.

I didn't make any changes to Dresden's quest, however it may be a bit more difficult now with the changes I've made, I hope this doesn't start a war between the gods :P

Finally, another evil god. I was thinking I would have to switch sides to even things out.

@grant2004: As long as the bear wasn't touched, this won't start a war between the gods. If the quest "fails", it is the mortals who will pay

@CCRunner7: The nice thing about using a quest is that the goodness/evilness of the god is determined by the player's actions. I can go either way, and I have plans for both. ;)

There still is Rolo and other, probably subtler gods still around. And I notice you missed my other gift a little. Hmmmm......
