DLC 5 General Discussion Thread

The potatoe archers are pretty nice.

The DLC05 depots for Mac and Linux were created.

On Steam Discussions AspyrBlair said they are working hard to get DLC05 out for Mac and Linux in the next few weeks with cross-platform multiplayer.

Nubia start bias - Tier 1 desert and Tier 1 desert hills

That's the first major civ to get Tier 1 bias... if there is desert on the map you will definitely start there.

Yesterday I mentioned that they created the depots for DLC05 for Mac and Linux. In addition to that, they created one called "Sid Meier's Civilization VI Depot".

What an innocuous name! It sounds perfectly fine, except why does it exist? All the game depots already exist. This appears to be superfluous. If they wanted to switch the depots codenamed Madrid to a better name, they could just change the names rather than creating a new depot. Also, it's currently sitting unused.

This smells like a charade to me. I think it was given this name to disguise its purpose. Between this and Civ GH, something is afoot.

Did anyone get the Jebel Barkal achievement already? I have the wonder and 6 surrounding cities, but no achievement... Maybe you need to have the cities before you build the wonder? :p Or the +4 of the wonder don't count and you need 7 cities...

If DLC6 indeed turns out to be the end of the DLC cycle, now could well be the time when they start developing and testing an expansion pack in earnest. I doubt they'd want to call it "EXPANSION_1" knowing your hawk-like gaze is upon their precious depots, EP.

July seems to be their favoured month for expansions - even going back to Civ IV Warlords. That would make us approximately one year out from a first expansion for Civ VI.

The Mac qa build was just updated and is testing DLC05.

Same deal for Linux 10 minutes later.

I can't find the post, but someone wrote elsewhere that tier 1 is the weakest bias, and others have reported rolling several non-desert starts in a row as Nubia. I wonder if someone at Firaxis thought 1 was highest but it's not.

We've talked about weak vs strong biases before. How does that actually apply in situ? Does a strong bias mean that you will start directly on desert every time, while a weak bias means that there will be some desert within a certain number of tiles?

I wonder if we are going to get an expansion sooner than expected. This year seems unlikely, but perhaps Q1 or Q2 next year (instead of Q3 or 4).

I thought it was just priority for who got a starting location. I.e. if there's one suitable starting location with desert, Nubia gets it. If there are no suitable desert starts on the map, well no one gets one. So I'd be curious if those non-desert Nubia starts had anyone else starting on a desert.

I expect Q2. They are definitely gearing up for something big, since they are hiring and all. And since Pete got shuffled to the Civ writer position, we know that it's a Civ thing they are gearing up for. Ed and Dennis Shirk have probably gotten the design work squared away and they will be starting on the coding, the art, the music, and the voice work soon.

The creation of depots seems preemptive, but maybe not.

My bet was always for the first half of next year, with an announcement around Christmas/New Year. Perhaps I should have started a betting thread like Manifold :D

I believe it says in the code before the bias section that lower numbers mean they get 1st preference. I don't know how they break a tie. The only others that have a teir 1 are the two coastal CS.
Brazil is teir 2 jungle - they almost always start with several jungle tiles.
Several civs have multiple biases and some have none.
I believe they made Nubia teir 1 for desert/desert hills because most desert locations don't have the minimum fertility required for a major civ starting location. This is the most likely reason you might not get a desert start. I would suggest using balanced or legendary starting locations because the script will add fertility to poor locations to make them meet requirements.
The biases are in the civilizations file in the gameplay folder. They are easily editable so if you are looking for a certain type of start with a specific civ, I would suggest making a few edits to significantly increase your chances of getting it. By the way, Natural Wonders are considered features and you can add in a start bias for them. You need to use legendary starting locations to allow the script to place starting locations adjacent to wonders. I believe it's an 8 hex minimum on standard.

Again, I'm really pleased at how considerate they are at responding to one's posts. So far, they have responded to each of mine. They might not be able to tell you everything, and I can understand that, but the fact that there is a direct and quick acknowledgment, it does build respect and loyalty. Don't get me started on how I feel about Firaxis. Regardless, we have 2-3 weeks of waiting. Hoping for the least possible time!
