Hello,

It is possible to have different religions in your city. This enables you to build religion-specific building (like temples, synagoges (Jewish) and cathedrals (Christian). The benefits of these buildings are more hapiness (and maybe some other things).

By building multiple temples etc. do these benefits add up, or is it useless?

They add up, both the extra happiness and the culture per turn. That's the main reason why it can be good to have many religions in your city, even "foreign" ones, or why it's useful to produce missionaries of your own faith to spread that faith into your own cities.

Oh, and welcome to CFC! :)

Yes they add all add happiness and culture each turn. With the free religions civic turned on, they increase research :)

Each temple will add extra happiness and culture so the more the merrier! It works the same for the cathedrals, and since the 50% culture from each stacks you can end up with some amazing culture ratings. I've never quite got 1000 culture per turn but I've got fairly close, though once the city hits legendary culture it doesn't make much difference.

since you need three temples to build cathedrals, do those temples have to be of the same religion? or could i have one christian and two buddhist say, and build a christian cathedral?

You need 3 temples of the same religion to build a cathedral. One city with 3 religions and 3 temples won't open up a cathedral...however 3 cities with the same 3 religions each with 3 temples each will open up 1 cathedral of each religion to be built anywhere.
