Do volcanos stop erupting?

Basically, is there ever a safe time to build next to a volcano? Do they stop erupting after a certain age.

Volcanoes are really messing with my city placement. :gripe:

Nope, unfortunately not. You either have to live with it, or create a map that has no volcanoes on it. ;)

That's good to know. Strangly, the computer doesn't seem to mind building next to those city-destroyers.

 Weird! I would have thought they'd be programmed to not build at all in an adjacent square to a volcano, or something like that...

Actually in TGOTM succesion game I am in, in this post on the turn(s) of Bede... Berlin is scrapped thanx to a vulcano erupting, I think it was the german capitol.

It happened as well right after them declaring war on the friendly American people (us) which was 'nice' timing.

Now THAT'S really weird... I thought for certain that a volcano wouldn't be allowed to be placed next to a player start location...???

It'll place you just about anywhere. I remember a start once that had two volcanos. Another one was something like 1 volcano, 14 mountains, 2 hills, 2 floodplains, and 1 desert. In both instances the volcano was right next to the start location. :crazyeye:

The random map generator is totally indiscriminate about setting you down near volcanos, and does the same to the AI. Can't ever say I've seen a capitol torched by one before though.

It also does seem that volcanos go off a lot more in the early game than later.

Mmm, maybe Michelangelo is on to something here! Any idea where that article is? (If there is one?)

If a volcano blasts your capital when you have no settlers and no other cities, you win! :D

I once saw the AI build at the same spot 3 times only to be wiped out by the volcano. Admittedly, if not for the volcano that tile was the best spot for a city in the vicinity. After the third time I settled one tile away (not near as good of boni).

Volcanos erupt every 1000th year (IIRC). That's why volcanos erupt more in the early game.
 I thought that was just a rough average???

Playing as Mongols I once had my capital whiped out by a Volcano, it hurted me a ton, cause my Wines were disconnected, & my capital switching to a very bad location. To those wondering, I resigned 10 turns later, damage was huge :(

If you start by a volcano though, wouldn't you move??? Or did you not know about volcanoes at that stage?

It's not necessarily dangerous to build next to a volcano, you just have to be aware of which way the lava flows. Each volcano will generally spew in a certain direction, and if your city isn't in that range it will be safe. I'm guessing the AI knows which side of the volcano to build on.

Which tiles get damaged by the volcano is a random event. There is no way to predict which tiles will get hit. I've seen the AI lose cities and rebuild in the same spot in many games.

Every volcano on the map will erupt at least once in a 5000 year period. That's the editors help description of the setting.

I´m afraid they don´t. al_thor documented how the Ottomans got wiped out by a volcano in post #25 in the COTM 12 2nd spoiler in the GOTM-forum. Visit it, it´s really funny imo.
