Do you build explorers?

I love explorers, especially if you're on a planet that involves a lot of woodland, hills, mountains, or any terrain that slows mounted units down. They're also good for slipping between enemy troops and cities, and they don't cause civic unrest. Just one warning: don't use them to open huts. They can't defend themselves so even one barbarian will kill them.

I usually only use them when exploring in boats, in which case they are very useful for opening huts because you can just hop back on your boat and sail off if you get anything nasty.;)

Explorers are great for revealing the map, and popping huts. They're also good for zone of control when your in representative government. No unhappiness, and they can't be expelled like spies.

Although I do think that you can be forced to withdraw them.

Yes you can be asked to withdraw them. My explorer today stood up to 8 Barbarian horsemen  That was on Prince. They are good units, but I don't think they are worth the time and resources, I'd rather be building Settlers/Engineers :)

Personally, I never build them, but think it would've been better if they were "see 2"-units. I rather send out a mounted unit, which means I can attack first if I find some barbs in huts.

Explorers are something that might be useful but I usually have more important things to build.

I agree with Dell19. I always have more insteresting things to build that a Explorer. I love exploring with ships and calvary (elephants or equivalent), beacuse with two elephants or equivalent you can destroy a little city of your enemies, stopping their expansions

I usually build one or two, mainly for pole exploration, and for popping huts and hopping back in the boat as Jayne said.

If I discover an advanced tribe with an explorer in a remote area, I will fortify him and immediately build the best veteran unit available. Then activate and keep exploring! :goodjob:

Given a choice, I'd rather build dips than explorers. I'd definitely want a dip when dealing with barbs. Explorers are good for exploring bad terrain. When exploring, I like to put one with a dip and a mounted unit on a ship to be ready for anything.

I don't usually build explorers, but occasionally, they are very handy to have. In rough terrain and even in good, their ability to move 3 squares covers more ground than a mounted unit can.

I haven't thought of that before!:goodjob: I've always been annoyed when I pop a hut on bad terrain, so that I can't move back, from a ship and it turns out to be a barbs nest:(

Unless the hut to be popped is surrounded by land, and the barbs completely surround you!

I've done the same thing as Jayne with the boat/Explorer combo, although it also works in clear terrain with a horseman. But I do build one or two Explorers early in the game if I'm not battling more than two AI civs, especially if there's a lot of mountains around.

Yes,although I never have built them, after reading what every one has to say;I think I'll give it a go on the next game!
Hi Ren ,how are you?
 [dance]

Perhaps I will try to implement them but I still think I will have more important things to build and in an mp game I may never need to explore the poles.

i never used to build explorers but now i do. but arnt partisians explorers with good defense and attack
