Do you build many cottages if your not financial?

Cottages are an effective way of producing commerce whether you are financial or not, just moreso if you are financial. Personally, (being of questionable ability) i cottage my commerce cities to death whether im financial or not.

I rarely play FIN, though I think it is a decent trait, but anyway to my point - cottages are the foundation of my economy in the mid-late game. Of course there's other sources of income, but I think cottages are huge regardless of the traits you're playing. (Though, admittedly you can win without cottages.)

I will build cottages later if I don't have financial. With financial I go pottery ASAP and start cottaging as a priority. Without it I will eventually build just as many but not as early.

Unless of course I am playing a philosophical, spiritual or industrious leader in which case I will cottage only a few cities and concentrate more on specialists. Eventually all of these will get more cottages, but much later in the game and never to the same extent that my cottage economies will get.

For the love of God, what are cottages?

Something I have learned about coastal cities is that they're not as useless as I used to think. When you build a harbor and get astronomy for ocean trading, the money from trade routes starts to pour in. I've seen trade routes for +12, though I don't understand how. But I'm not complaining.

The size of the city and the size of the city the trade routes go to are 2 of several factors
Mouse over the trade routes in the city screen to get a list.

Therefore on island, continent maps..: Astronomy + Free Religion = $$$

in most cases, unless running a dedicated SE or going for a *specific* strat like Obsolete's, i will build cottages in dedicated commerce cities even if not financial.

i am also building cottages now if philosophical simply because the need for self-research is so great in BtS

Um, when it's not my product city (I seem to make a lot of them;) ), every avalabe tile? I don't play FIN all that often right now...

If financial and landlocked early I will build alot of cottages to leverage the trait AMAP. If financial and costal I'll build fewer cottages.

The non-financial trait I build cottages but not as agressively earlier.
