Do you ever levy city-state military?

I like that. The AI is so smart sometimes that it will anticipate your moves and block you. Oh wait, this is a CS so not necessarily an antagonist...

Lol, yeah been there too. Or sometimes just to get them out of a mountain pass I want through.

Twice recently I levied units but then lost Suzerainity of that CS and all the levied units I paid for disappeared.

No. Yesterday I finished a game with a science victory after about 300 turns without a single DOW from the AI. I was coveting a few Incan cities that were close to my borders but I didn't need to conquer them - all of them flipped due to loss of loyalty, including their capital.

When my exoplanet expedition arrived I still had crossbowmen defending my cities.

I never really thought that was a possibility: to loose the units you paid for just because someone else took the suzerainity away from you...never happened to me but I have to keep that possibility in mind!
