A large number of people on the far left seem to direct much resentment against everything Western. They'll hate America, be obsessed with evrything "bad" in western history, like the Crusades or Imperilalism, dismiss the West's unsurpassed cultural, scientific and religious achievements. It goes without saying that they'll hate Christianity, even if they don't dislike religion in general.

##########################################

This is how history looks to them:

Ancient Times:

Ancient Greece stealing all its ideas from superior middle eastern or African cultures
The Evil Roman Empire expands, with its primary goal to extinguish the memory of better civilizations to the east or south

Medieval Times:

A period of unsurpassed backwardness; no cultural achievements; totally dependent on, say, the Arabs, for all knowledge. The main western achievements in this period were the Crusades and the Inquisition

Early Modern Period:

The West begins a period of systematic exploitation of superior cultures; colonization, slavery. Western intellectuals conspire to rid memories of other cultures's achievements.

Modern Period:

Western evil culminates in the Nazis and America's even worse Capitalist World Empire; the only good thing is the fall of imperialism, even if this is only an opportunity for increased American commercial expansion; invention of nuclear weapons

##########################################

Are you one of these people? Do you think that the West is essentially evil? Would the world be better off without us?

EDIT: My opinion is that the West, America, etc, have been a blessing on the World, in general. Western scientific achievements have brought mankind in general, the wonders of modern life: modern medicine, mass communication, entry into Space, etc, etc.

i see you dont like america and our "capitalist world empire"

good to hear that calgacus :)

I feel guilty for everything my forefathers did, and I feel just as guilty about all I have that other people don't have as a result. So, I naturally talk down everything Western in a negative context to help deal with this guilt, while at the same time living in all of its benefits without any intention of sacrificing my lifestyle for these beliefs.

...

I think I was just possessed for a minute :crazyeye:

I think the greatest achievement of western civilization is to have done all the good for the world we have, while having to fight the undertow generated by generations of self-loathing people who hate that which gives them the comforts they enjoy so much.

Now THAT was one heck of a sentence. :D

Edit: Darn! That'll teach me to read the whole thread before responding. Greadius got there first...

Well I think that the Egyptian, Persian (and its predecessors) and Ionian cultures had an important impact on us barbars west and north of the Aegean. I am also rather hostile towards Christianity because of its disruptive influence on the empire (poor Diocletian).
Therefore I must be an evil person and accept my shame with good grace.

I love western civilization, more then any other kind. I dont envy other civilizations, rather I hold some in contempt.

Western civilization has given mankind many beneficial philosophies and many positive, tangible achievements. It has also given mankind many negative philosophies and negative achievements. The same can be said for the other major world cultures. If western culture has exceeded other cultures in its negative contributions it's primarily because our scientific and technological achievements have allowed the negative contributions to be magnified. Hitler killed more people than Pol Pot not because he was inherently more evil, but because he had the technology to kill people in larger numbers.

I voted no, and America has been great for the world, until the postwar politics of Korea and beyond. Now it's government is just a fat pig all the little piglets suckling at it's nipples and trying to get everything they can from it. Not that they need more.....

However, alot of people on the left like the west, like France, Germany, Russia, Greece, Portugal....... and even Britain, Italy, Spain,......

America is just severely steering way off course of it's original goals of personal freedoms and a beacon on a hill.

There is nothing 'evil' about our past and current societies.

We are just human, as we were then, and we continue to be.
You cannot tar-brush the whole of European/American development with a brush of negativity.

And who is the great benchmark we must be judged by?

The Eastern societies?
Who gave us such pillars of enlightenment as the Khans, the Ottomans, the Shoguns and a wealth of other blood-soaked war-addicts?
These people are just the same as out own western blood-soaked war-addicts!

Perhaps you seek you judge us, based on the shaky ground of gods?
Well, we invented such concepts ourselves, so the judgement is defunct in my view.

Every era has negatives and positive aspects that counterbalance each other.

Calgacus, if you hate our world so much, why not save up and buy a spacecraft, or just take tons of intoxicants to blot it all out.

Because history is history, what can YOU do about it?

Hi Curt, looks like you'll have to join SunTzu in the I-Missed-the-Irony Club. :crazyeye:

BTW, the edit on my first post explains my views ;)

The "I-Missed-the-Irony Club?"

I am already a gold-card member! :D

While modern western concepts such as democracy and human rights are excellent contributions to the world, the emergence of capitalism as the dominant economic system negates all positives and then some.

It is the best product of humanity so far, with the exception of some the softer and degenerate aspects within it.
