Do You Mainly Use Single Or Mutiple Attack Forces?

I try to hit multiple cities at once for a quick war, so multiple stacks save me. I usually have 15 in my main and 10 in my secondaries. 3 stacks, an SoD hitting the capital, and the others going west/east or north/south of my SoD. High unit maintenance, but they get the job done.

If your shared border is long enough, one advantage to multiple stacks is that by taking more cities quickly, you can cut down considerably on the number of defenders that can be whipped/drafted/rushed. You might merge two of the surviving stacks subsequently, but taking (say) three cities in the first two turns is never a bad thing.

When you are planning an attack do you mainly use one attack force and take the opponent city by city or do you split your forces and attack multiple targets simultaneously?

Obviously this is dependent on situation as there are times when you can clearly attack multiple targets with impunity and times where you clearly cannot afford to split the force up.

I'm interested in what you do the majority of the time when the outcome isn't as clear cut.

Any other strategy ideas regarding multiple attack forces and multiple targets welcome.

I do both. My last game, I had an amphibious assault group loaded with marines on transports and escorted with 4 destroyers. Then I had my ground army split in 2 so I can attack inland with them and use my amphibious force to hit the coastal cities. I planned this whole war out in several turns and just after declaration, I landed marines then started hitting them with my land based forces.

You have a better chance of surviving as a single stack, i.e. if you get hit with catapults, trebuchets etc.
But there may be situations when splitting the force would be an advantage. I guess it depends.

I generally use two armies. One is the main army, which does the bulk of the fighting and city grabbing. The second is a decoy army that runs around pillaging and diverting troops that would attack the main army.

I always start with one stack, to deal with the AI's swarm. After that, if I'm exploiting a new tech, I'll split and try to take as much as possible quickly. Otherwise, solid steps.
